Yale Young African Scholars Program 2021 for African secondary school Students

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students planning to pursue tertiary education and who wish to make meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.

Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive guidance on university admissions and career path options, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. Following the seven-day program, students will be paired with mentors who will advise them throughout the university application process. There is no tuition cost for students to participate in YYAS.

To keep everyone safe during the global pandemic, YYAS 2021 will be an online program. YYAS will be hosting a seven-day virtual session using various digital platforms from 25th July to 31stJuly 2021*. Relevant program information will be communicated directly to admitted students via email.

The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) program is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and has enjoyed support from The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale and Higherlife Foundation. YYAS was modeled off its sister program, Yale Young Global Scholars, and continues to operate under its umbrella. 

Eligibility Requirements 

Prospective applicants must be current secondary school students in Africa who have one term to one full academic year left to complete after August 2021. Students should be between 14 and 18 years old. In addition, applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an African country.

YYAS is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and gives admissions preference to high-achieving, low-income (i.e. “HALI”) students who do not have university guidance in their schools or communities. To increase accessibility, there is no tuition cost for any studen

Requirements

  • YYAS is a high-intensity academic enrichment and leadership program that brings together outstanding secondary school students from across Africa.
  • Students are exposed to the rigorous university admission and financial aid processes, attend college-style seminars led by Yale University students, and build a network of peers from across the continent.
  • New this year, students will also participate in career guidance workshops in their field of interest: communications, technology, entrepreneurship, or public health.

Now in its eighth year of programming, YYAS has served more than 1,600 students and has brought together young leaders from more than 40 countries across Africa. To keep everyone safe during the global pandemic, the YYAS 2021 program will be held online from 25 July to 31 July. Admitted participants will access pre-recorded videos before the start of the program and attend live sessions with specially curated leadership and development content during the week-long event.

Step 1Review the YYAS eligibility criteria.
Step 2Review the YYAS application required components.
Step 3Review a PDF of a sample blank application, and start preparing to answer as many application questions as possible.
Step 4You will need to submit contact information for a parent/guardian, teacher, and/or official at your school. Reach out to them as soon as possible to review the PDF of a sample blank application with you, and be sure to collect the information you need.

Complete the Application:

Step 5Click APPLY NOWto start your YYAS application. Be sure to write down your email and password to access the application at a later time. The deadline to complete and submit the application is 16 February 2021 @ 11:59pm EST.
Step 6Check the “Review” page of the application to see if you are missing any required components, and re-visit any pages that require further information.
Step 7Once your application is complete, click on the “Review” page. Next click on the “Submit Application” button at the bottom of the page. 

Application Procedure

To apply, students must submit an online application that includes one essay and two short-answer prompts. Students must also upload an official school transcript or grade report as well as provide the contact information for one teacher who knows them well enough to fill out an online recommendation form.
