Applications are now open for the 2025 L’Oréal-UNESCO Young Talents for Women in Science program. The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science national and regional “Young Talents” programmes have been supporting young women researchers around the world to pursue their scientific careers in their home countries or abroad since 2000.
This year, the Fondation L’Oréal rewards, through the 15th edition of the regional Sub-Saharan Africa L’Oréal-UNESCO L’Oréal For Women in Science Young Talent program, 25 doctoral and 5 post-doctoral students selected by a jury of eminent African scientific experts.
Eligibility criteria
- Be a PhD student or have obtained a Ph.D in the following scientific fields: Life and Environmental sciences, Physical sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer and information sciences (2nd year at least).
- Be from one of the 48 countries in the sub-Saharan African region, and work in a research laboratory or institution in one of the countries of the region, or be enrolled in a University in one of the 49 countries of the region (including South Africa).OR
- Be from one of the 49 countries in the sub-Saharan African region (including South Africa) and work in a research laboratory or institution in one of the 48 countries of the region, or be enrolled in a University in one of the 48 countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
Therefore, applicants originally from South Africa doing their research in South Africa are not eligible for this programme.
Benefits
- Beyond this financial support (10,000 Euros for doctoral students and 15,000 Euros for post-doctoral students), the program also offer them a leadership training program, which complements their academic career and allows them to be better armed to lead their career and break the glass ceiling more easily.
- At the end of this training, an Award Ceremony will be held in an African capital (date and place to be defined) in the presence of an audience from all over the African continent: representatives of public authorities, UNESCO, scientists, women influencers, academics, intellectuals, opinion leaders and organizations promoting gender equality.

- Scientific excellence of the research project.
- Quality of the application.
- Ability to communicate and promote science.

- April 7, 2025: Closing of the call for application/nomination
- July 7, 2025: Candidates’ final selection
