Yale Young African Scholars Program 2023 for African secondary school students.

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students planning to pursue tertiary education and who wish to make meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.

Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive university admission and financial aid application guidance, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. Following the program, students will be paired with mentors who will help advise them throughout the university application process.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Age: You must be at least 14 years old, and not older than 18 years old, by the application deadline (1st February 2023) in order to be considered. Please note that a typical YYAS student is between the ages of 15 and 18. 
  • English: You must be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. YYAS will also accept applications from refugees living in an African country.
  • School location: You must currently attend school in an African country.
  • Grade Level: You must be a current 11th grade student (or the international equivalent). 
  • Graduation date:   If you attend school in the Northern Hemisphere, you must be graduating secondary school by latest May/June 2024. If you attend school in the Southern Hemisphere, you must be graduating secondary school by earliest November/December 2023 and no later than November/December 2024.

A typical YYAS participant has:

Requirements

  • YYAS is designed to bring together high-achieving and socially-conscious secondary school students from across the African continent.
  • Regardless of the format, students can expect a week of university-style seminars, workshops on career exploration and university admissions, interactions with industry and academic professionals from Yale and beyond, and networking with a pan-African cohort of peers.
  • Asynchronous and synchronous programming will be a critical part of both programs. 

    In 2023, YYAS will offer a residential program in addition to its online program

YYAS 2023 Program Dates:

YYAS Online: 30 July- 5 August 2023

YYAS Zimbabwe: 11-18 August 2023

While the YYAS program can provide free housing and academic curriculum materials for all participants during the residential program, each student will pay a program fee of 175 USD in advance to cover all meals and local operational expenses during the program. Additionally, each student must be able to pay for and coordinate their own travel to and from Zimbabwe.

YYAS Program Content

Seminars and SDG Seminars

Seminars are interdisciplinary, standalone classes taught by Yale University students on various topics relating to the African continent, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The seminar-style classes offer a taste of what they will experience in a university learning environment. Past seminars have included:

  • Water for Wellness, an SDG Seminar
  • Language and its Effects on Our Behavior
  • Afro-Innovation, an SDG Seminar
  • Why Do We Sleep?
  • Foreign Aid in Africa

Workshops

Yale University instructors lead small groups of students through various activities designed to develop strong bonds with peers from around Africa through identity reflection, courageous conversations, active listening, and fun social activities.

Career Guidance

Career guidance exposes students to different career pathways through interactive talks led by prominent professionals in their field. Students choose from one of four career tracks, including communications, technology, entrepreneurship, and public health.  

University Admissions and Financial Aid

University representatives spend two days with YYAS students and present on curriculum, financial aid, and their individual institutions. Past universities that have participated include Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Rice University, Sciences Po, African Leadership University, Ashesi University, and more.  

Standardized Test Preparation

Before the start of the program, students will watch a pre-recorded video designed specifically for African test-takers new to exams like the SAT. Students can submit questions to be addressed in a live SAT Q&A session during the program.

Mentorship

After the YYAS program, students have the opportunity to receive a mentor who will serve as one of the many post-YYAS resources available to students.  Mentors are on-hand to help YYAS students in several areas, such as identifying extracurricular activities, selecting universities, writing essays, and test preparation strategies. 

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and continues to enjoy support from The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale. YYAS was modeled off its sister program, Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS), and continues to operate under its umbrella. 

How to Apply:

  • To apply, students must submit an online application that includes one essay and two short-answer prompts. Students must also upload an official school transcript or grade report.
  • YYAS also strongly encourage students to provide the contact information for one teacher who knows them well enough to fill out an online recommendation form.

Yale Young African Scholars Program 2021 for African secondary school Students

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students planning to pursue tertiary education and who wish to make meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.

Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive guidance on university admissions and career path options, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. Following the seven-day program, students will be paired with mentors who will advise them throughout the university application process. There is no tuition cost for students to participate in YYAS.

To keep everyone safe during the global pandemic, YYAS 2021 will be an online program. YYAS will be hosting a seven-day virtual session using various digital platforms from 25th July to 31stJuly 2021*. Relevant program information will be communicated directly to admitted students via email.

The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) program is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and has enjoyed support from The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale and Higherlife Foundation. YYAS was modeled off its sister program, Yale Young Global Scholars, and continues to operate under its umbrella.

Prospective applicants must be current secondary school students in Africa who have one term to one full academic year left to complete after August 2021. Students should be between 14 and 18 years old. In addition, applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an African country.

YYAS is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and gives admissions preference to high-achieving, low-income (i.e. “HALI”) students who do not have university guidance in their schools or communities. To increase accessibility, there is no tuition cost for any studen

  • Students are exposed to the rigorous university admission and financial aid processes, attend college-style seminars led by Yale University students, and build a network of peers from across the continent.
  • New this year, students will also participate in career guidance workshops in their field of interest: communications, technology, entrepreneurship, or public health.

Now in its eighth year of programming, YYAS has served more than 1,600 students and has brought together young leaders from more than 40 countries across Africa. To keep everyone safe during the global pandemic, the YYAS 2021 program will be held online from 25 July to 31 July. Admitted participants will access pre-recorded videos before the start of the program and attend live sessions with specially curated leadership and development content during the week-long event.

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students planning to pursue tertiary education and who wish to make meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.

Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive university admission and financial aid application guidance, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. Following the eight-day program, students will be paired with mentors who will help advise them throughout the university application process. There are no tuition, meal, or lodging costs for students to participate in YYAS.

Requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 14 years old by application deadline (12 February 2020) in order to be considered. Please note that a typical YYAS student is between the ages of 15 and 18. 
  • English: You must be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen or permanent resident of an African country. YYAS will also accept applications from refugees living in an African country.
  • School location: You must currently attend school in an African country.
  • Graduation date: If you attend school in the Northern Hemisphere, you must be graduating secondary school by earliest May/June 2021. Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive university admission and financial aid application guidance, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. Following the program, students will be paired with mentors who will help advise them throughout the university application process. There is no tuition cost to students to participate in YYAS.

YYAS 2019 will be held in three locations:

Ghana | 25 July – 01 August

Kenya | 07 August – 14 August

Zimbabwe | 18 August – 25 August

Eligibility Requirements:

  • YYAS accepts applications from current secondary school (i.e. high school) students in Africa, typically between the ages of 15 and 18. All applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an African country AND currently be attending a school in Africa.
  • Students who will graduate secondary school before November/December 2019, or who have already graduated secondary school, are NOT eligible to apply. YYAS will also not accept applications from students who are younger than 14 years of age by the application deadline

Please note that YYAS is a university access program that gives preference to high-achieving, low-income (HALI) students who do not have university guidance in their schools or communities.

Application Requirements:

  • Completed application form – The application can be found online and must be filled out by the applicant. Students will be asked to complete one 500-word essay and two short responses, and must provide information on their extracurricular activities and the school that they currently attend. Please be sure to write down the email and password you use to create your account so you may log back in.

  • Official transcript or grade report(s) – A student transcript is an official document provided by the school and includes the applicant’s list of courses and grades received. Students must upload their official transcript or grade report(s) for each year of secondary school. National exam scores, if available, should also be submitted but are not required. If a student has changed secondary schools at any point, they must include records both from their previous AND their current school. Please refrain from uploading certificates or transcripts from primary school.
  • One teacher recommendation – The recommendation must be written and submitted by a teacher who knows the student well. They may do so through a link that will be provided by the applicant on the online portal. Alternatively, the teacher may email a letter of recommendation in PDF (.pdf) format to [email protected] and our staff will upload it to the student’s application. Recommendations from parents/guardians, siblings, relatives, family friends, and/or paid private tutors/counselors will NOT be accepted.

2016 Yale Young African Scholars Program for African Secondary School Students (Fully Funded)

Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a seven-day, residential program for African secondary school students currently enrolled in high school on the African continent.

The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is a high-intensity academic and leadership program designed for African secondary school students who have the talent, drive, energy, and ideas to make meaningful impacts as young leaders, even before they begin their university studies.

YYAS brings together students from across Africa in this seven-day, residential program and helps prepare them for the demanding application process of attending university in the United States. YYAS is an official program of Yale University.YYAS is designed for students who will graduate from secondary school in 2018.

Eligibility:

  • In order to be eligible for the 2016 Yale Young African Scholars Program, you must be a citizen of an African country and currently attend school on the African continent.
  • YYAS accepts applications from current or rising high school juniors (US grade 11), or the international equivalent.
  • Students will have 1.5 – 2 years left before completing high school, depending on academic calendar (see some specific country examples below).
  • YYAS does not accept applications from current seniors (US grade 12), secondary school graduates, or college/university undergraduate students.

By Countries:

Zimbabwe

Lower 6th students (11th grade equivalent) who have already taken their O Level exams are eligible to attend YYAS. The YYAS application, which comes out in September of their Form 4 year and is due in March of their Form 5 (Lower 6th) year, requires that students submit their O Level exam scores with their application.

Kenya

Form 3 students (11th grade equivalent) are eligible to attend YYAS. The YYAS application will be released in September of their Form 2 year and due in March of their Form 3 year.

Ghana

Students who have completed one year of Senior Secondary School (SSS1) and have two years remaining (rising 11th grade equivalent) are eligible to attend YYAS. The YYAS application will be due in March of your SSS1 year.

Rwanda

Form 2 students (11th grade equivalent) are eligible to attend YYAS. The YYAS application will be released in September of their Form 1 year and due in March of their Form 2 year.

Nigeria

Students who have completed one year of Senior Secondary School (SSS1) and have two years remaining (rising 11th grade equivalent) are eligible to attend YYAS. The YYAS application will be released in September of their SSS1 year and due in March of their SSS1 year.  Following YYAS, they will enter SSS2.

Ethiopia

Current Grade 10 students are eligible to attend YYAS. The YYAS application will be released in September of their Grade 10 year and due in March of that same academic year. Following YYAS, students will enter Grade 11.

  • The program will help prepare students for the demanding application process of U.S. universities through small group workshops and post-program mentorship.
  • The week long program will help students recognize and understand global issues, strategize responses, and innovate solutions while learning from Yale faculty, as well as undergraduate and graduate students who currently attend Yale.
  • Students will participate in a lecture series and a number of elective seminars on a variety of topics.
  • The demanding academic content is designed to improve students’ analytical thinking, intellectual flexibility, and written and oral communication skills.
    Benefits:
  • There is no cost to students to participate in the Yale Young African Scholars Program. 
  • Participants are, however, responsible for getting themselves to the venue at the outset of the program and their return home at the end of the program.
  • Participants will also be responsible for any incidental expenses they elect to incur.
  • Admitted students demonstrating financial need may apply for a limited number of travel assistance grants, intended to help defray the cost of international travel between African countries.
  • Students can only apply for travel assistance after they have received an offer of admission to YYAS.
  • On-site accommodation is mandatory, and will be provided for all students, along with three meals a day. There is no cost for students to participate in the program.

2015 Yale Young African Scholars Program for Outstanding High School Students.

The Yale Young African Scholars Program (YYAS) is an initiative modeled off of the Yale Young Global Scholars Program. This program is intended solely for African students attending secondary school on the African continent.

The 2015 Yale Young African Scholars programs will be hosted by Yale University in two locations:

Kenya: August 12 – 17

Zimbabwe: August 20 – 25

The Yale Young African Scholars Program is a high-intensity six-day program designed for African students who will graduate from secondary school in 2017 or 2018, are 18 years or younger at the time of the program, and have the talent, drive, energy, and ideas to make meaningful impacts as young leaders, even before they begin their university studies. The Yale Young African Scholars Program is an official program of Yale University.

Programme Content

The programs will help students recognize and understand global issues, strategize responses, and innovate solutions while learning from Yale faculty and African undergraduate and graduate students who currently attend Yale. Students will participate in a lecture series and a number of elective seminars on a variety of topics.

The demanding academic content is designed to improve students’ analytical thinking, intellectual flexibility, and written and oral communication skills. These skills will be further utilized in small workshops designed to prepare students for the demanding application processes of U.S. colleges and universities.

Student Profile:

A student in the program must:

  • plan to graduate secondary school in 2017 or 2018
  • be 18 years or younger at the time of the program
  • have excellent academic record
  • have demonstrated leadership potential
