2016/2017 World Habitat Awards for Innovative solutions to key Housing Challenges around the world

The World Habitat Awards recognise innovative, sustainable and scalable solutions to key housing challenges facing communities around the world. The World Habitat Awards were established in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation as part of its contribution to the United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.

Two awards are given annually to projects that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems. Every year an award of £10,000 is presented to each of the two winners at the World Urban Forum (even years) and UN-Habitat Governing Council (odd years).

Housing projects and approaches are sought that

  • demonstrate practical, innovative and sustainable solutions to current housing issues faced by countries all around the world
  • can be transferred or adapted for use as appropriate
  • are already being implemented or are completed ie not at design stage or very early stages of development
  • view the term habitat from a broad perspective and bring other benefits as well, such as energy or water saving, income generation, social inclusion, community and individual empowerment, health benefits, capacity building or education.

Who can enter

  • Any individual, organisation or government who has an innovative and practical solution to housing needs and problems from any country of the world.
  • More than one entry can be made by the same individual or organisation.
  • Entries should relate to housing projects and processes that are either completed or in progress. Those that are at design stage only or in the very early stages of development cannot be considered.
  • Previous entrants can re-submit in subsequent years providing that the project has been further developed in the intervening time period.

Prize:

As well as international recognition, awards of £10,000 will be made to each of the two winning projects. Trophies will also be presented to the winning projects, and travel and accommodation costs will be met for one representative of each winning project to attend the awards ceremony.

For the World Habitat Awards 2016/17 cycle:

29th April 2016 – Final deadline for receipt of submissions

June 2016 – Notification of shortlisted projects

1st August 2016 – Deadline for further information from shortlisted projects

August 2016 to January 2017 – Evaluation of shortlisted projects

February 2017 – Announcement of the winners of the World Habitat Awards 2016/17

April 2017 – Presentation of the Awards at the UN-Habitat Governing Council

Vote Now for your Representatives for the 2015-2017 UN-Habitat Youth Advisory Board

UN-Habitat is now inviting young people between the ages of 16 to 32 from around the world to vote for their representatives for the 2015-2017 UN-Habitat Youth Advisory Board.

The Youth Advisory Board is a youth consultative body that advises UN-Habitat on strategies to engage young people in sustainable urban development.

The Board was first established at the World Urban Forum in Nanjing in 2008.Since its establishment, significant progress has been made towards mainstreaming and engaging youth in UN-Habitat programmes and major events including the Governing Council and the World Urban Forum.

Now in its fourth term, the board constitutes 14 members with equal gender representation for each region. The online voting invitation follows an initial call for nomination made through the UN-Habitat website in February 2015 that attracted over 600 strong applicants.

These applications were reviewed by the Board’s Review Committee at UN-Habitat who narrowed down to the selected 60 candidates to be included in the online voting process.

UN-Habitat thanks all the young people who offered themselves to serve on the Board and wishes them every success in their efforts to engage and empower youth in their regions

2015/16 World Habitat Awards for Innovative solutions to key Housing Challenges around the world

The World Habitat Awards recognise innovative, sustainable and scalable solutions to key housing challenges facing communities around the world.

The World Habitat Awards were established in 1985 by the Building and Social Housing Foundation as part of its contribution to the United Nations International Year of Shelter for the Homeless.

Two awards are given annually to projects that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems.  Every year an award of £10,000 is presented to each of the two winners at the World Urban Forum (even years) and UN-Habitat Governing Council (odd years).

BSHF invites innovative housing projects to apply for the 2015/16 World Habitat Awards for the chance to gain recognition for their work.

Entry procedure

Initial submissions should comprise a concise description of the key aspects of the project or approach, accompanied by images where possible.

Full plans, costings and evaluation reports are not required at this stage, although can be supplied if you wish to do so (the main headings under which information should be supplied are set out on the entry form).

Submissions can be made in English, Spanish or French and must be received by 30th April 2015.

Shortlisted projects are asked for the following information:

1. A detailed description of the project or approach

  • Aims and objectives of the project
  • A description of the context of the project and the problems it is designed to overcome
  • A full description of the project, including physical, social and financial aspects
  • A statement detailing both the capital costs of establishing the project and the revenue costs, where appropriate, of running it
  • A clear identification of the key innovative features of the project
  • An assessment of the impact of the project and results achieved to date
  • A statement of roles of the residents and different partners involved in the project
  • Identification of the extent to which the approach used in the project has been transferred locally, nationally or internationally

2. An evaluation of the financial, social and environmental sustainability of the project

3. A statement on any barriers encountered in the project as well as lessons learned

All submissions should be accompanied by supporting plans and images.

The format of text, plans, diagrams and photographic presentation is entirely at the candidate’s discretion, subject to a size limit of A4 or slightly larger.

Shortlisted projects are asked to send two copies of this information in English.
