World Social Science Forum Scholarship (travel grants) Fund 2018 for Early Career Social Scientists from Low-Income Countries (Funded to Japan)

In order to secure the voices of young researchers in this global event, the Forum organizers are putting together a WSSF Scholarship (travel grants) Fund for early career social scientists from low- or lower-middle income countries.

Selection & Requirements

The WSSF Scientific Program Committee will competitively select grantees. Candidates eligible to apply for support from the Fund are early career social scientists from a low- or lower-middle income country with a presentation accepted in the 2018 WSSF program. The grant is conditional to the acceptance of the presentation by the Scientific Program Committee, Candidates should

preferably be under 40 years of age;
preferably be post-doc level (or equivalent experience) and
live and work on research in a low- or lower-middle income countries (according to the World Bank Data).

Benefits:

The WSSF2018 Scholarship for Early Career Social Scientists will cover

economy return flight (to be booked by the WSSF Secretariat);
visa application expenses( if necessary);
5 nights’ accommodation (:@JPY10,300 /night);
daily allowance for meals etc. for 5 days(:@JPY2,200/day) and
early registration fee.

You will also be asked to provide a short CV (2 pages maximum) and proof of employment for a research institution. You are required to set all the documents into one PDF file.

2015 World Social Science Fellows Seminar on Sustainable Urbanization, Durban South Africa

ISSC Fellowship for Outstanding early career social scientists around the world

Dates: 9 – 13 September 2015

Place: Durban, South Africa

Agenda: Four days of discussion on sustainable urbanization, some of it in a “traditional” academic setting, based on work submitted by Fellows. Other parts of the discussion will focus on interactive research visioning and action planning.

The International Social Science Council (ISSC) calls for applications from outstanding early career social scientists around the world to become World Social Science Fellows and participate in a World Social Science Seminar on Sustainable Urbanization with the thematic of “Urban governance to tackle urban poverty and environmental sustainability.”

Guided by the core question, ISSC is looking for talented early career social scientists to become World Social Science Fellows.

The ISSC is an international organisation that aims to advance the practice and use of the social and behavioural sciences in all parts of the world, and to ensure their global representation.

The World Social Science Fellows Programme is sponsored by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, This seminar is organised in partnership with The Comparative Research Programme on Poverty , the Urbanization and Global Environmental Change Project and the Cities Alliance .

Eligibility Requirement:

To be eligible to apply, you have to be:

Deeply familiar with a local/regional context to address the challenge posed by proposed Sustainable Development Goal 11
A post-doctoral researcher with a maximum of five years research experience following your PhD (candidates with more research experience can also be considered, if they explain why they should be eligible); or
An early career researcher without a PhD but with an equivalent level of research experience and output;
Under 40 years of age (candidates over the age of 40 can also be considered, if they explain why they should be eligible)

Benefits:

The ISSC will cover travel costs for the journey to Durban and local travel and subsistence costs for those selected as World Social Science Fellows.

At the end of the five days, Fellows will have a good overview of the current state-of-the-art of research as well as a vision for essential, compelling research priorities for the coming 5 to 10 years. A final, fifth, day of the seminar will take Fellows to the World Social Science Forum

Selection process

The ISSC will select a maximum of 20 early career social scientists to participate in the seminar

and become World Social Science Fellows. ISSC will seek to ensure representation from around the

world and from different social science disciplines, as well as gender balance.

– A Curriculum Vitae of no more than 2 pages, including information about education, research projects and networks, awards and prizes and other pertinent experiences.

In addition to the 2 page CV, add a list of your most important publications.

– An abstract (one page maximum) of the paper you would present at the seminar.

– A statement (one page maximum) outlining your perspective on the topic. Please highlight

relevant experience you have in interdisciplinary research projects.

– Agreement from your home institution about your participation in the seminar, including a

short outline of how you will share knowledge you have gained at the seminar with your colleagues/students after you return. The seminar will be held in English.

EIGHTH SOUTH-SOUTH INSTITUTE (CLACSO-CODESRIA-IDEAs) INEQUALITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE: PERSPECTIVES FROM THE GLOBAL SOUTH

When: September 11 to 18, 2015,

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) and the International Development Economic Associates (IDEAs), are pleased to announce, within the framework of the third three-year phase of the Africa/Asia/Latin America Scholarly Collaborative Program, the call for applications for participation in the Eighth South-South Institute on “Inequality and Social Justice: Perspectives from the Global South”.

The Institute will be held in Durban, South Africa, from September 11 to 18, 2015, on the back of the third
World Social Science Forum (WSSF III, jointly hosted by CODESRIA, the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa and the ISSC). The Theme of the WSSF III is: Transforming Global Relations for a Just World

The annual South-South Institute is a key part of the third phase of the Africa/Asia/Latin America Scholarly Collaborative Program and it aims at offering research training to younger scholars on the diverse set of issues that are relevant to the countries of the South.

The institute seeks to promote the revival and growth of comparative research and cross-regional
networking among a younger generation of Southern scholars. Annual sessions of the South-South Institute rotate among the three continents where the lead collaborating institutions are located, namely, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

This exposes participants, who are drawn from all three continents to the socio-historical contexts of other regions of the South and helps broaden their analytical perspectives and improve the overall quality of their scientific engagements.

Eligibility:

Younger scholars resident in countries of the South and who are pursuing active academic careers are eligible to apply for a place in the Institute.
Each applicant should have university education, preferably with a minimum of a master’s
degree in any of the social sciences and humanities.
Applicants should have a demonstrable working knowledge of English.

Selection:

Selection for participation will be on the basis of a competitive process.
Altogether, 30 candidates will be selected for participation in the Institute, with 10 each from Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Benefits:

The full participation costs of the selected laureates will be covered, including their travel (economy return air tickets), accommodation and subsistence.

Application Requirements:

Researchers wishing to participate in the institute as laureates are invited to submit an application with the following documents:
a) A research proposal, written in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese, on the subject on which the prospective laureate would like to work during the Institute. The topic selected must be related to the theme of the Institute. Proposals should not exceed 10 pages in length and should have a clearly defined problematic;
b) A one-page cover letter, which should indicate the motivation of the prospective laureate for wanting to participate in the Institute and explain how they envisage that they and their institution will benefit from the Institute;
c) A Curriculum Vitae complete with the names of professional and personal referees of the prospective laureate, the scientific discipline(s) in which s/he is working, the nationality of the applicant, a list of recent publications, and a summary of the on-going research activities in which the applicant is involved;
d) A photocopy of the highest university degree obtained by the applicant and of the relevant pages of his/her international passport containing relevant identity data; and
e) A letter from the applicant’s institution (university department/faculty) or research centre supporting his/her candidature. This statement of institutional support should be done on institutional letter-headed and must be duly signed and stamped.

To receive certificates of participation laureates will be required to draw on the lectures and materials from the institute to transform their proposal into a 20 pages essay for consideration for joint publication and dissemination by CLACSO, CODESRIA and IDEAs.

Application Procedure:

The Tri-continental arrangement requires applicants resident in Africa to submit their applications to CODESRIA, those resident in Asia to IDEAS and those resident in Latin America to CLACSO.
