Call for Nominations: 2020/2021 World Economic Forum of Young Global Leaders.

Do you know a leader under 40 who is making an impact on the world and innovating towards the greater good? Nominate them to join the Young Global Leaders Class of 2021.

Selection Criteria

  • The candidate must be 38 years old or younger at nomination
  • Has 5-15 years of recognized achievements, leadership and outstanding professional work experience.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment to serve society at local and global levels, has an impeccable record in the public eye, good standing in their community, self-awareness and a desire to learn.
  • Candidates from the business sector must manage a corporation or division and must hold one of the following titles (or equivalent): President, chair of the board, chief executive officer, managing director, managing partner or publisher.
  • Companies, organizations and entities can only nominate one candidate from their qualifying company every two years.
  • If the company is a member or partner of the World Economic Forum, the candidate requires the approval of the chief executive officer or chair of the board of the respective company.
  • Self-nominations are not accepted.

Benefits

  • YGLs are fully involved in the Forum’s meetings, initiatives and research and interact with the Forum’s wider multi stakeholder community.
  • YGLs have a powerful role in determining the community’s activities. They are governed by a foundation board of respected leaders and are managed by a dynamic team of young professionals based in Geneva and China.
  • Set up as an independent, not-for-profit foundation under the Swiss government, the Forum of Young Global Leaders is an integral part of the World Economic Forum.

Timeline:

  • Summer: The World Economic Forum shortlists candidates for further review
  • Fall: The shortlisted candidates are reviewed by Heidrick & Struggles, recognised as one of the world’s leading executive search and leadership consulting firms
  • Winter: A Selection Committee reviews the top candidates and selects 100 to be honoured as Young Global Leaders
  • January of subsequent year: The candidates are informed of their selection as Young Global Leaders*
  • March of subsequent year: The press announcement for the new Class of Young Global Leaders is released

Essay contest: What does the fourth industrial revolution mean to you?

The eighteenth century’s cotton looms and steam engines overturned the way the world worked in the first industrial revolution. Then came mass production, with the efficient factories of the early twentieth century changing the nature of labour. Then the computer age, as PCs gradually shrank from the size of a room to something that would fit in the palm of your hand.

And now we’re in the middle of the most profound and fast-moving economic shift of them all. Man and machine are converging, digitisation is disrupting everything, new technologies are emerging more quickly than we can imagine them, let alone think up the rules to govern their use. This is the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a new era where we will be able to 3D-print both livers and guns.

Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the theme of the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting 2016 in Davos.

What does this change mean to you? Can you provide a concrete example of how the Fourth Industrial Revolution will play out in your community, your industry, or even in your family? What should we do to manage its risks and reap its rewards?

Requirements

  • WEF are inviting essay submissions of up to 900 words on the theme of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
  • A shortlist of five essays will be published on the World Economic Forum’s Agenda blog platform, which is read by 1.5 million people a month.
  • The winning essay will be shared with delegates at Davos and promoted across WEF social media channels during the meeting, while the winner will receive a signed copy of Professor Klaus Schwab’s book.

1. Publish your essay on Medium

2. Tag your essay “Davos essay contest”

3. Email the link to [email protected]

4. The deadline for submissions is December 31st. The shortlist will be announced on Medium and Forum Agenda on January 11th, and the winner on January 18th.

5. The contest is for members of the public. World Economic Forum staff and constituents are not eligible.

2016 Schwab Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award: Apply Now

Applications are now open for the Schwab Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Social Entrepreneurs around the world.

The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship provides unparalleled platforms at the regional and global level to highlight and advance leading models of sustainable social innovation. It identifies a select community of social entrepreneurs and engages it in shaping global, regional and industry agendas that improve the state of the world in close collaboration with the other stakeholders of the World Economic Forum.

The 2016 Awardees will join the Schwab Foundation’s global community of over 325 outstanding social entrepreneurs operating in 60 countries. Members of the Schwab Foundation community receive many benefits, including support services from our partners, peer-to-peer learning opportunities with fellow entrepreneurs, and access to World Economic Forum events such as Davos.

Eligibility Criteria:

Successful candidates:

  • Are running a for-profit or non-profit whose primary mission is social and/or environmental change
  • Have a track record of at least 3-5 years and have expanded to multiple locations/cities
  • Can be tackling any social or environmental issue (e.g youth, housing, water, health care, employability, education, climate change, etc.) but work directly with low-income or vulnerable populations
  • Are not (crowd)funders, intermediaries, incubators, or technical assistance providers
  • Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply

Benefits:

  • Selected winners will be included in the Schwab Foundation network of social entrepreneurs.
  • This includes access to a peer network of social entrepreneurs, special benefits such as pro-bono consulting services and scholarships to executive education courses at world-class institutions such as Harvard Business School, Stanford University and INSEAD.
  • The winners will be invited to the regional meetings of the World Economic Forum which are relevant to their work.

They are highlighted as leading social entrepreneurs in a plenary session with heads of state and/or corporate leaders. Excellent finalists or winners under 40 will also be nominated to the Young Global Leaders network of the World Economic Forum.

Process

Step 1 – Those interested in being considered as candidates complete the application form. Information gathered in the selection process will remain confidential and submit additional information such as a Curriculum Vitae, a recent evaluation report of the organization, income statements, etc.

Step 2– The Schwab Foundation and local experts review the information forms submitted by Second Round Candidates. Those who qualify are invited to be semi-finalists. At this stage, further information is gathered through site visits to the candidate’s organization and/or interviews with the candidate and key informants. This due diligence step enables the selection of the finalists.

Step 3 – Finalists Selected

Step 4 – Selection Committee (Schwab Foundation Board Members) selects the winners
