Applications are now open for the Westerwelle Young Founders Programme – Autumn 2024. The Westerwelle Young Founders Programme (YFP) is a six-month fellowship for 25 leaders uplifting emerging and developing markets towards a sustainable future.

Requirements

  • You are a citizen or resident of a developing or emerging country.
  • You have recently (in the last five years) started a for-profit company focused on developing or emerging markets.
  • Your company possesses a scalable business model that has generated revenue or secured a first round of external funding.
  • You or your business possesses disruptive qualities that can increase the quality, impact or inclusiveness of the industry.
  • You possess a good working knowledge of English.
  • You are available to attend the digital kick-off conference and can make time to participate in programme activities for the six months.

Benefits

The Westerwelle Young Founders Programme offer targeted support to scale our founders’ ventures and develop their leadership abilities, with the following programme plan:

  • Kick-Off Event: A two-day digital kick-off event will take place in mid September 2024.
  • Remote Programme: From September 2024 – February 2025, the Young Founders will receive six months of support including a personal mentor, monthly peer learning sessions, monthly expert workshops and networking opportunities with corporates and investors.
  • Berlin Conference: The ten best performing Young Founders will be invited to a five-day conference in Berlin in June 2025. During this conference, the founders will have the opportunity to pitch in front of investors, participate in workshops, join networking events and get insights into the German start-up scene.

Timeline:

  • Application deadline: Sunday, 11 August at 23:59 CET
  • Interviews with shortlisted candidates: 12 – 30 August 
  • Notification of all applicants: Early September

Westerwelle offer targeted support to scale our founders’ ventures and develop their leadership abilities, with the following programme plan:

  • Kick-Off Conference: A two-day digital kick-off conference will take place in the first week of September 2022.
  • Remote Programme: From September 2022 – February 2023, the Young Founders will receive six months of support including a personal mentor, monthly peer mentoring sessions, monthly expert workshops and networking opportunities with corporates and investors.
  • Berlin Conference: The ten best performing Young Founders will be invited to a five-day conference in Mai 2023. During this conference, the founders will have the opportunity to pitch in front of investors, participate in workshops, join networking events and get insights into the German start-up scene.

You have recently (in the last five years) started a for-profit company focused on developing or emerging markets.
Your company possesses a scalable business model that has ideally generated revenue or secured a first round of external funding.
You or your business possesses disruptive qualities that can increase the quality, impact or inclusiveness of the industry.
You possess a good working knowledge of English.
You are available to attend the digital kick-off conference and can make time to participate in programme activities for the six months.


Application Process

The following application will provide our Programme Team with an understanding of your startup and profile. Please have the following key elements ready:

  • Your startup pitch deck
  • Basic financial information (i.e. revenues, funding)
  • Your LinkedIn profile

With these on hand, the application will take approximately 20 minutes. Only complete applications will be reviewed.

Application deadline: Tuesday, August 9 at 11:59 CEST

Interviews with shortlisted candidates: August 22-27, 2022

Notification of all applicants: 30 August 2022

The Westerwelle Young Founders Programme (YFP) is a six-month fellowship for 25 leaders uplifting emerging and developing markets towards a sustainable future. YFP offer targeted support to scale our founders’ ventures and develop their leadership abilities, with the following programme plan:

  • Kick-Off Conference: A two-day digital kick-off conference will take place in the last week of September 2021;
  • Remote Programme: From October 2021 – March 2022, the Young Founders will receive six months of support including a personal mentor, alumni buddy, monthly peer mentoring sessions, monthly expert workshops and networking opportunities with corporates and investors;
  • Berlin Conference: The ten best performing Young Founders will be invited to a five-day conference in Spring 2022. During this conference, the founders will have the opportunity to pitch in front of investors, participate in workshops, join networking events and get an insight into the German start-up scene.
  • Selection Criteria

    YFP is looking for entrepreneurs with high potential for impact and growth to become leaders of a sustainable future, with the following criteria:
    • You have recently (in the last five years) started a for-profit company focused on developing or emerging markets;
    • Your company possesses a scalable business model that has ideally generated revenue or secured a first round of external funding;
    • You or your business possesses disruptive qualities that can increase the quality, impact or inclusiveness of the industry;
    • You possess a good working knowledge of English;
    • You are available to attend the digital kick-off conference and can make time to participate in programme activities for the six months.

Westerwelle Young Founders Programme Autumn 2019 for Young Entrepreneurs (Fully Funded to Berlin,Germany)

The Westerwelle Young Founders Programme is a fully funded 6-month-long programme for outstanding young entrepreneurs from emerging and developing countries. The programme aims to connect young founders from all over the world with each other and with the Berlin startup scene, and support them in further developing their entrepreneurial skills and their international network.

The Westerwelle Young Founders Programme Autumn 2019 will start with the Young Founders Conference from 22nd to 26th of October, 2019 in Berlin. During this time, the 25 participants have the unique opportunity to meet and interact with successful entrepreneurs, investors and political decision makers. Throughout the programme, the Young Founders will have the chance to develop their businesses and discuss challenges with a personal mentor as well as with fellow Young Founders in a peer mentoring group. Moreover, Young Founders will receive further support through regular expert webinars that cater to their needs.

Requirements:

  • You have recently (in the last 5 years) started a for-profit company with a scalable business model that has achieved Product-Market Fit and has ideally secured first external funding (if you run a business model that requires external investment);
  • your company is based in a developing or emerging country or has a strong business focus on developing and emerging economies;
  • you possess a good working knowledge of English;
  • you are available to attend the Young Founders Conference in Berlin and can make time to participate in monthly mentoring and peer mentoring calls for the 6-month programme.

Please note that foreign applicants must possess valid travel documents (including a visa, if necessary) to enter Germany, and valid travel medical insurance.

Benefits:

  • The Westerwelle Young Founders Conference – a week-long conference in Berlin to get to know fellow Young Founders, the German startup scene, and strengthen their entrepreneurial skills by attending workshops and meetings (travel and accommodation will be covered by the Westerwelle Foundation);
  • A personal mentor who is an experienced entrepreneur and will function as a sparring partner with whom you can discuss upcoming challenges and new opportunities;
  • Monthly peer mentoring calls with the other successful Young Founders of the cohort to share knowledge with and support each other;

  • The Young Founders Network — a strong alumni network that functions as a platform for all Young Founders to connect with each other, exchange ideas and find support for existing challenges;

  • Assistance beyond the programme as we remain a contact person for the Young Founders and will help you to find suitable experts for challenges, offer possibilities to share learnings with current cohorts or celebrate successes.
