WARA Ideas Matter Doctoral Fellowship Program 2016 for Young West African Scholars ($USD12,000 in Research Grants)

The West African Research Association (WARA), in collaboration with The MasterCard Foundation, is pleased to announce support for young West African scholars through its new Ideas Matter Doctoral Fellowship program. This program reflects our joint commitment to increasing opportunities for emerging West African scholars, people who are transforming ideas into active solutions to the challenges facing the region and the world at large.

In addition to a 1500 word proposal, budget, CV, two letters of recommendation, applicants must submit a statement explaining how their research will contribute to meeting critical needs on the continent.

Requirements:

  • The Ideas Matter Doctoral Fellowship is open to doctoral students under age 35 who are based in West African institutions of higher education, for research on the continent.
  • Priority will be given to research projects focusing on women, technology and entrepreneurship.

West Africa, like other parts of the world, is rich in intellectual resources. Universities are home to scholarly communities of scientists, historians, artists, and social scientists. Young scholars in the region are carrying out innovative, cutting edge research in agriculture, technology, the humanities, and a wide range of other fields. They are poised to deliver innovative solutions to challenges posed by the changing climate, demographic shifts, and cultural transformations that mark our times. The Ideas Matter Doctoral Fellowship program will support the research initiatives of young scholars.

  • In 2016, the Ideas Matter Doctoral Fellowship program will award three doctoral research grants of $4,000 each.

The West African Research Association is devoted to the promotion of research and scholarly exchange between and among West African and US scholars and institutions. Over the past 15 years, WARA has directly supported the work of some 100 West African researchers. WARA’s overseas headquarters, The West African Research Center (WARC) is located in Dakar, Senegal. WARA is a member of the Smithsonian-based Council of American Overseas Research Centers and has its U.S. offices at Boston University’s African Studies Center.

2016 Saharan Crossroads Fellowship Competition for African Scholars

The American Institute for Maghrib Studies (AIMS) and the West African Research Association (WARA) announce the fourth annual Saharan Crossroads Fellowship Competition for 2016.
Saharan Crossroads seeks to counter the conceptual divide separating North and sub-
Saharan Africa and the tendency to view the Sahara Desert as an impenetrable barrier dividing the continent into the northern “white” and sub-Saharan “black” Africa.
Countries to the north often find themselves placed in Mediterranean, Islamic, and Middle Eastern studies with little consideration of cultural, historical, or artistic contact with sub-
Saharan countries, which are often considered more authentically “African.”
Despite trans-Saharan cultural contact spanning centuries, this inaccurate perception of Africa as two distinct zones separated by an empty wasteland of desert continues to influence the way people think about this region and the continent as a whole.
The Saharan Crossroads Initiative is a partnership of AIMS, WARA and the Saharan Studies Association (SSA) that provides support for research, conferences and publications exploring the culture, geography, history, and sociology of this region.
Eligibility Requirements:
  • US , North African and West African Scholars interested in conducting research in any part of North or West Africa concerning Saharan Crossroads are encouraged to apply for short-term fellowships (up to three months)

Benefits:

  • Awards up to 3,000 USD.
  • US scholars flying from the United States will receive an additional travel stipend

2014/2015 Saharan Crossroads Fellowships for North/West African Scholars (3,000 USD)

Application Deadline: October 31, 2014.

Whom: The competition is open to students, senior or independent scholars holding at least a Master’s Degree. Research must be completed before Dec 31, 2015.

  • US, North African and West African Scholars interested in conducting research in any part of North or West Africa concerning Saharan Crossroads are encouraged to apply for short-term fellowships (up to three months) for awards up to 3,000 USD.
  • US scholars flying from the United States will receive an additional travel stipend.

Who Can Apply

  • Priority will be given to scholars conducting fieldwork in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia or anywhere in West Africa.
  • Priority will also be given to scholars who have not received AIMS or WARA funding in the last two years.
  • All Fellows are required to give a public lecture at an AIMS or WARC research center or other affiliated institution.

The deadline for submission of applications is October 31, 2014.

Awards will be announced in December 2014. This year there is funding for only three awards which will be given to one N. African scholar, one W. African scholar and one US Scholar.
