2015 WAAW foundation STEM Camp for African Girls (Scholarships Available)

WAAW foundation invites senior secondary school girls to register for its 2015 STEM camp. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathemathics.

  • The theme for the 2015 WAAW STEM camp is Computing, Robotics & Renewable Energy For Africa.

This one week Residential camp promises to be SUPER exciting, SUPER fun, very creative and innovative for 40 African girls in Lagos, Nigeria and Nairobi, Kenya!!!

Eligibility

  • The camp is aimed at  African girls between the ages of 13 and 17 years who are currently enrolled in Senior Secondary School SS1 – SS3.
  • Girls from all African countries are encouraged to apply.
Program activities
  • Students will learn to build exciting robots on the NXT platform
  • Students will build renewable energy systems such as solar and Wind Mill systems.
  • Students will learn basic computer science concepts and be introduced to programming using Arduino and raspberry pi platform, playing with blockly program.
  • Students will be introduced to app building for Andriod platform using MITs app builder.
  • Students will learn to program in Javascript and Python.
  • Students will participate in team building exercises.
  • All activities are very focused on hands on, integrative learning that promotes creativity, innovation and problem solving using locally available resources.
COST
  • N30,000 ($200) for private school students and other individuals
  • Full Scholarships and reduced cost available for public school students only.
  • *WAAW will not provide transportation to and from the camp location. Feeding, lodging, Science & Robotics kits, books, t-shirts, backpacks, hands-on learning and megafun will be provided.

2015 Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) Foundation Scholarship for African Women.

Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) Foundation  is pleased to announce its 2015 scholarships, offering $500/year for need-based female African students admitted to a University, College or institute of higher learning in Africa. WAAW Foundation is a U.S. based non – profit organization focused on Working to Advance STEM Education for African Women. WAAW promotes Science and Technology education among African girls, and works to ensure they are engaged in technology innovation for Africa.

  • Female students of African origin, living and studying in Africa.
  • Currently enrolled in undergraduate B.S.degree program.
  • Studying STEM related courses in a University or college in Africa.
  • Demonstrable financial need, and
  • Excellent Academic Record.
  • Below the age of 32 years.
  • Graduation date is after December of award year

Benefits:

  • Scholarship recipients receive an award of $500 for the 2015 academic year, or the equivalent in their country’s local currency.
  • Prior scholarship recipients may reapply for renewal the following year, with proof of continued excellent academic performance.

The Application Process:

  • WAAW will accept online applications from August 1 through October 31, 2014.
  • Applications submitted prior to this date will not be received or reviewed. Scholarship applications are reviewed by the WAAW foundation Scholarship Committee, and awards are announced by March 2015.
  • Application deadline is 12 midnight of October 31st, 2014. Instructions on how to apply are below.

How to Apply:

  • Visit the WAAW foundation web site at http://www.waawfoundation.org/scholarships and
  • complete the application form online.
  • Follow the application instructions carefully. You must finish your application in one sitting.
  • You will be required to write essays on your future career goals and how you expect the WAAW scholarship will assist in fulfilling those goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation,from academic mentors and or job supervisors are required
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be required tomail current University transcripts directly to WAAW Foundation by February 10, 2015.
  • Application documents must be submitted electronically via our online forms. We will not beaccepting paper applications this year.

2014 WAAW Foundation Scholarship for African Female Students.

The Working to Advance African Women (WAAW) foundation’s annual scholarship initiative is aimed at supporting need based African female STEM-focused college education.

Eligibility

Criteria for eligibility includes:

(a) Female students of African origin. living and studying in Africa.
(b) Currently enrolled in undergraduate degree program.
(c) Studying in a university or college in Africa.
(d) Demonstrable financial need, and
(e) Excellent Academic Record.

WAAW Foundation awards annual scholarships to students who demonstrate need and prove their status as full time students in a STEM related course in an African University. Recipients will become WAAW Ambassadors in their respective communities.

Scholarship Application Process

WAAW will start accepting 2013 applications from August 1. 2013.

Your application will include the following:

  1. Application form filled out completely. We will only accept online applications this year. NO PAPER APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED*.
  2. Personal and Contact Information.
  3. Educational Information
  4. Responses to essay questions that address career goals. and how you expect the WAAW scholarship will assist in your education.
  5. Two academic/professional references. Note recommendations and transcripts ARE NOT REQUIRED AT THIS TIME. ONLY after a candidate has been shortlisted.
