Draper Hills Summer Fellowship 2020 on Democracy and Development Program at Stanford University, USA (Funded)

Launched in 2005, the Draper Hills Summer Program (DHSF) is a three-week intensive academic training program that is hosted annually at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. The program brings together a group of 25 to 30 mid-career practitioners in law, politics, government, private enterprise, civil society, and international development from all regions of the world. This training program provides a unique forum for emerging leaders to connect, exchange experiences, and receive academic training to enrich their knowledge and advance their work.

For three weeks during the summer, fellows participate in academic seminars that expose them to the theory and practice of democracy, development, and the rule of law. Delivered by leading Stanford faculty from the Stanford Law School, the Graduate School of Business, and the departments of economics and political science, these seminars allow emerging leaders to explore new institutional models and frameworks to enhance their ability to promote democratic change in their home countries.

Guest speakers from private foundations, think tanks, government, and the justice system provide a practitioners viewpoint on such pressing issues in the field. Summer Fellows also visit Silicon Valley technology firms such as Benetech, Google and Twitter to explore how technology tools and social media platforms are being used to catalyze democratic practices on a global scale. 

Eligibility

This program is aimed at mid-career practitioners working actively in the fields of democracy, development, and the rule of law.

Applicants can be working as policy-makers, academics, legal professionals, social entrepreneurs, business entrepreneurs, and leaders of civil society organizations (such as representatives of trade unions, nongovernmental organizations, the media, business and professional associations).

In their present capacity, applicants should play important and influential roles in their country’s political, economic, and social development. Participants should have demonstrated professional and personal achievements in a relevant sector of democracy, development, and the rule of law.                           

Each year we strive to recruit a diverse group of 25 to 30 individuals who are at the right stage in their professional trajectory to benefit from rigorous academic training to enhance their potential to promote democratic change in their home countries.

A working knowledge of English is an important prerequisite for participation in the program. It is expected that each fellow has a solid command of written and spoken English to fully benefit and participate in the program. 

Benefits:

Stanford asks all applicants to be prepared to contribute towards the cost of their participation in the fellowship, if they are selected. Typically, this comes in the form of a fellow covering round-trip airfareto the Program. Stanford will pay for accommodations, most meals, and transportation costs during the duration of the Program.

In the past, some fellows have asked their employers to subsidize their travel to Stanford based on the benefits that the training will contribute towards their professional and organizational advancement.

They may also choose to fundraise for these costs after selection decisions are issued in April 2020 . A small travel fund is available for fellows who under no circumstances can support their travel or need to apply for a partial subsidy. Priority for accessing the travel fund will be given based on need, and destinations from which airline fares to California are exorbitant.

Dates for the 2020 Program

The dates for the 2020 Draper Hills Summer Fellows Program are Sunday, July 12- Friday, July 31, 2020. 

Applicants are required to participate the entire duration of the fellowship program. They must be sure that they can be absent from their professional obligations during that time and must make a commitment to attend the full program upon acceptance.

Call for Nominations: Winter 2019 Study of the U.S. Institute on U.S. National Security Policymaking at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE, USA (Funded)

Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSIs) for Scholars are intensive post-graduate level academic programs with integrated study tours whose purpose is to provide foreign university faculty and other scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions.

Candidates should be mid-career, typically between the ages of 30-50, highly-motivated and experienced scholars and professionals generally from institutions of higher education or research focused organizations (not-for-profits, think tanks, etc.). While the educational level of participants will likely vary, most should have graduate degrees and have substantial knowledge of the thematic area of the Institute or a related field.

This is to solicit candidate nominations for scholars and professionals to participate in Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for Scholars on U.S. National Security Policymaking. The Institute will take place from January 3 to February 15, 2019 at the University of Delaware in Newark, DE. .

Institute Description

The SUSI for Scholars on U.S. National Security Policymaking will provide a group of 18 scholars and professionals with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the foundations of U.S. national security policy and current threats facing the United States.  The Institute focuses on the formulation of U.S. foreign and national security policy and the role of the federal government, think-tanks, media, and public opinion in shaping that policy. The Institute will be hosted by the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware.

The program will examine U.S. national security policy continuities and changes throughout different presidential administrations.  The Institute will encourage intellectual engagement, reflection, and interaction with U.S.-based experts to deepen scholar knowledge of the foundations and formulation of U.S. national security policy.

The program focuses on four interconnected modules:

1) The U.S. view of the world and its place in the global system;

2) Terrorism and national security in the U.S. and abroad;

3) U.S. immigration and refugee policies; and

4) The search for the right balance between unilateralism and multilateralism.

Each week, scholars will participate in academic sessions, roundtable discussions with U.S. national security experts, and conversations with the broader Newark, Delaware community on key thematic topics. The Institute participants will also travel to San Antonio and Austin, Texas; New York City, New York; Washington, D.C.; and other regional locales.

Candidate Description and Qualifications:

  • Study of the U.S. Institutes are highly competitive.
  • Priority will be given to candidates who have firm plans to enhance, update, or develop courses and/or educational materials with a U.S. studies focus or component;
  • who have no prior or limited experience in the United States; and
  • who have special interest in the program subject areas as demonstrated through past scholarship, accomplishments, and professional duties.

  • Ideal candidates are individuals whose home institution is seeking to introduce aspects of U.S. studies into its curricula, to develop new courses in the subject of the Institute, to enhance and update existing courses on the United States, or to offer specialized seminars/workshops for professionals in U.S. studies areas related to the program theme.
  • While the nominee’s scholarly and professional credentials are an important consideration, the potential impact and multiplier effect of the Institute is equally important.
  • Candidates must demonstrate English language fluency.  Institutes are rigorous and demanding programs; participants will be expected to handle substantial reading assignments in English and to fully and actively participate in all seminar and panel discussions.  English fluency is vital to a successful experience in the Institute, both for your participant and participants from other countries.  Posts must indicate the level of English language fluency in Section R of the nomination form. 
  • Candidates should be willing and able to fully take part in an intensive post-graduate level academic program and study tour.  It is important that posts and Commissions nominate only persons who are likely to be comfortable with campus life and an active program schedule.

2018 Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media – St. Petersburg, Florida, USA (Funded)

Now in its fourth year, the Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media is returning to Poynter’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida, the week of March 18-23, 2018.

This transformative program, open to 28 participants, focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to rise to the highest levels of digital media leadership. Sessions will cover how to develop effective management styles, handle difficult situations, manage burnout, master negotiation tactics and build collaborative teams.

As in past years, the program will be structured to encourage open, candid discussion and mentoring. Participants will walk away with strong leadership skills and a built-in support system of peers. All attendees will receive one-on-one coaching during and after the program, and create personal leadership strategies designed to take their careers to the next level.

Requirements:

  • Women working in the digital space with leadership responsibilities or demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Poynter will select a group of 28 women working in digital media that represent need and diversity across race, geography, technology platforms, organization size and skill sets. Because of the small size of the class, the selection committee will give preference to women leaders currently working in digital media who can demonstrate an aptitude and potential for leadership through current projects and references.

Costs 

  • Tuition for the academy is free, thanks to the generous support of the McClatchy Foundation as well as funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Newmark Philanthropies. Participants will cover their own travel and accommodation costs. However, a limited number of travel stipends are available and will be determined once the application process is completed.

Benefits:

  • U.S. fellows receive $70,000 – distributed as $8,750 monthly – from September through April. Stipend details vary for international fellows and are worked out on an individual basis.
  • All tuition and course fees at the University of Michigan are paid for by the fellowship. Spouses and partners are invited to partake in university courses as well.
  • In addition, all fellowship trips – domestic and international – are covered. If the fellow’s employer does not contribute to insurance coverage, health insurance is provided to fellows and their family members who join them in Ann Arbor.

Phase One of the Application

General Information

You will be asked to provide contact information for yourself and your employer, demographic information and to answer questions about your journalism achievements and disciplinary background. You will also be asked to upload several documents including a resume, personal statement, study plan and work samples.

Letters of Reference

You do not need to submit letters at this time.  You will be asked to enter the name, title and affiliation of each person whom you would ask to write a letter on your behalf. Applicants will be invited to submit reference letters as part of Phase II of the application process.

  • In no more than 500 words tell us what academic areas you propose to study. How do these relate to your career objectives? How do you plan to carry out this work: Courses? Tutorials? Research? Indicate areas of study, not specific classes. What benefit will this be to you, your employer or the field of journalism, following the fellowship?
  • There will also be a field for you to summarize your study plan in 15 words or less.

Personal Statement

  • You will be required to upload a personal statement of up to 1,500 words. This statement should examine what inspires you as a journalist including your life experiences, professional interests and core ethical values. How have these factors influenced your decision to submit an application for a fellowship at this point in your career? What are your professional aspirations and how do you expect the fellowship to help you attain those goals?

Work Samples

You will be be asked to submit two work samples at this time and additional samples may be requested during Phase II of the application process. Please submit work samples following the guidelines and all materials should preferably be from the past two years.

Leadership & Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program 2017/2018 for study at Georgetown University, USA (Funded)

The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, in order to train women’s human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries to advance the status of women and girls throughout their careers.

The entire LAWA Fellowship Program is approximately 14 months long – from July of the first year through late August of the following year. LAWA Fellows commit to returning home to continue advocating for women’s rights in their own countries. The LAWA Program starts in July, when the Fellows attend the Georgetown Law Center’s Foundations of American Law course. From August through May, the LAWA Fellows earn a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree at Georgetown with an emphasis on international women’s human rights and complete a major graduate paper on a women’s rights issue. Fellows also participate in professional development seminars and networking events with recent U.S. law school graduates who are working in the field of women’s rights.

After graduation, the LAWA Fellows have an opportunity to engage in challenging work assignments for several months at various public interest organizations to learn about different advocacy strategies to advance women’s human rights, before returning to their important women’s rights work in their home countries.

Requirements:

  • Candidates who are awarded a LAWA Fellowship must be prepared to cover the costs of all additional expenses (such as visas, travel, housing, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, books, fees, etc.
  • You must be a women’s human rights lawyer from Africa in order to be considered. You must hold an LL.B. or other law degree. Preference is given to those who:
  • are currently living and working in Africa, and do not already have a Masters’ Degre
  • The strongest applicants tend to be about five to ten years out of law school. Others with less of more experience may be considered and accepted into the LAWA Program. Candidates with no work experience and are applying directly from an LL.B. or other law school will not be considered
  • Men who are committed to women’s rights are strongly encouraged to apply
  • As a requirement of participation in the LAWA Program, all applicants must commit to return home to their own countries upon completion of the Fellowship, and to use their best professional efforts to advance women’s human rights in their counties throughout their careers.
  • You must have strong English language skills, both written and oral. Language problems have been the primary barrier to success for LAWA Fellows.
  • The LAWA Program requires candidates to become proficient in using computers for drafting papers and conducting research. Candidates are strongly encouraged to learn basic computer skills before arrival in order to make this transition easier. At the very minimum, candidates should work to improve their typing speed before starting the program.
  • Candidates must be prepared to enter a very demanding course of study. LAWA Fellows take four required courses and several more elective courses over the course of the two semesters. Fellows are required to produce a Masters’ Thesis totaling no fewer than 40 pages, including several drafts with intense research, writing and editing. Successful completion of the program requires intense commitment, focus, and very hard work.

Benefits:

  • The LAWA Program helps defray the costs for candidates who would not otherwise be able to afford an LL.M. degree focusing on international women’s human rights and additional professional development training.
  • The LAWA Fellowship provides the tuition for the mandatory Foundations of American Law and Legal Education course held from mid-July to mid-August (a U.S. $2,000 benefit) and for the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the Georgetown University Law Center (a U.S. $ $48,835 benefit).
  • Candidates must be able to provide for their own living expenses while in the United States.

  • Fellows are selected on the basis of past performance, future promise and, above all, leadership in some aspect of journalism. Great care goes into assembling classes of fellows that mix the type and size of news organizations as well as personality, geography and background. Typically, 12 Americans are joined by six international colleagues.
  • Selection is determined by a committee of distinguished journalists and University of Michigan faculty. U.S. finalists are interviewed at Wallace House in April and announced in early May.
