The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford foster journalistic innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership. Each year, JSK Fellowship give up to twenty outstanding individuals from around the world the resources to pursue and test their ideas for improving the quality of news and information reaching the public.  The application period for the John S. Knight Fellowships Class of 2019 is now open.

JSK Fellows spend their time at Stanford University exploring solutions to the most urgent challenges facing journalism. They sit in on classes, attend events on campus, connect with experts in the university’s many research institutes and consult innovative thinkers and doers throughout Silicon Valley.

A JSK Fellow’s job during their 10 months at Stanford is to meet a few expectations of the fellowship program and to make the most of the opportunity. The most successful fellows take initiative and seek out people who can help them explore their questions and make connections, even before they arrive at Stanford.

Requirements:

  • U.S. applicants typically have at least seven years of full-time professional experience; international applicants typically have at least five years of experience.

Professional background

JSK consider applicants in these categories:

  • Journalists employed by a news organization or freelance journalists.
  • Journalism entrepreneurs and innovators.
  • Journalism business and management executives.

Benefits:

  • JSK Fellows are provided with several financial benefits, including a stipend of $75,000. In addition to this stipend, we provide a supplement of $15,000 to $40,000 for fellows with children.
  • JSK also cover the cost of Stanford tuition.
  • JSK pay for Stanford health care for fellows, spouses and children, which ranges from $20,000 to $30,000 per family. The total financial support to fellows ranges from $95,000 to $145,000.

JSK ask fellows to agree to these conditions:

  • Spend the academic terms in residence at Stanford from September to June. (This means time at Stanford, not in Hawaii, on the road or at home.) Fellows receive long breaks during the fellowship year — most of December and two weeks in March — so we expect them to minimize other time away.
  • Participate fully in JSK activities. This means attending all JSK events and workshops; we have two to three events a week. Some of the most important relationships and learning will happen within the fellowship program itself.
  • Commit to the fellowship rather than to regular professional work. We require fellows to take a leave from their jobs and their freelancing and consulting commitments to devote their energy to the fellowship full time.
  • Focus on the fellowship proposal throughout the year. In addition to our events and some classes at Stanford, fellows work on a challenge facing journalism, which should occupy at least half of their time and energy.
  • Share the fellowship experience and lessons. We expect fellows to share publicly the experiences, work and insights they gain throughout the year, and the results of their efforts near the end of the academic year. JSK encourage and support that sharing even after the year is over.

Are you ready to join the ranks of Kiplinger Fellows — journalists trained to thrive in the Digital Age? The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio University seeks innovative journalists with a strong desire to reboot their digital skills

Applications for the 2018 Kiplinger Fellowship are open.

The renown digital media fellowship will be held April 16-20, 2018 in Columbus and at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens. Only fully completed applications with the correct number of samples and with English translations (if needed) will be accepted.

Since 1973, journalists have competed for prestigious Kiplinger Fellowships at Ohio State University. In recent years, hundreds of journalists from around the world have applied annually for 20 to 25 slots – positioning the Kiplinger Fellowship among a handful of nationally prominent journalism fellowships.

Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program 2017/2018 for Africans to study at Stanford University, USA (Fully Funded)

The Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program pays for tuition and associated fees (approximately US $160,000) for citizens of African countries with financial need who wish to obtain an MBA at Stanford GSB. Stanford will award up to eight Stanford Africa MBA Fellowships annually.

Within two years of graduation from Stanford GSB, Stanford Africa MBA Fellows are required to return to Africa to work for at least two years in a professional role that contributes to the continent’s development.

Merit

Stanford evaluate three criteria when considering candidates for both the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship and the MBA Program: intellectual vitality, demonstrated leadership potential, and personal qualities and contributions that will add to the class. Commitment to Developing Africa

You must be a citizen of an African country. Dual citizens are eligible for the fellowship as long as you hold citizenship of an African nation. Residents of an African country who do not have citizenship belonging to an African country are ineligible at this time.

  • You must have completed, or be in the final year of completing, your university studies. If you studied at an undergraduate or graduate institution in Africa, we especially encourage you to consider applying for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program.
  • African citizens who studied in countries outside of Africa are also eligible for the fellowship.

Benefits:

  • At minimum, the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship covers two years of tuition at the Stanford MBA Program, plus all associated fees (approximately $160,000).
  • Stanford GSB also contributes to room, board, and other living expenses if you have additional financial need demonstrated in your financial aid application.

  • Official transcripts are not considered at this stage. Finalists will be required to submit an unofficial copy of your transcripts in the MBA Application and will submit official copies upon admission to the MBA Program.

Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship finalists must apply to the Stanford MBA Program in either round one or round two to be eligible for the fellowship. However, we strongly encourage you to apply in round one. Over the last few years, the number of applications we receive in round two has increased, making it more competitive. Submitting in round one also gives you more time to prepare and plan for the program, including completing the visa application process.

Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship finalists must submit the Stanford MBA Program application, including GMAT or GRE scores, and if applicable, one of the English language tests (IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL). Finalists may request up to one voucher to cover the cost of either the GMAT or GRE test. The MBA application fee will be waived for finalists.

4. Receive an offer of admission

Stanford GSB will select up to eight Stanford Africa MBA Fellows each year from among the finalists.

Cora Weiss Fellowship 2017 for Young Women Peacebuilders – New York, USA (Fully Funded)

The Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) is pleased to announce its second annual Cora Weiss Fellowship for Young Women Peacebuilders. Launched in 2015, the Fellowship aims to support the development of young women peacebuilders and ensure that more young people share Cora’s vision for sustainable peace and gender equality as strong and integral parts of our global culture.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the Cora Weiss Fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. At least one year experience of volunteering or employment in a women’s rights/human rights/peace advocacy organization;

2. One year experience in policy advocacy on women’s rights, human rights, peace and other social justice issues, including understanding of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, and related laws and policies;

3. A Bachelor’s degree in international relations, women/gender studies or the social sciences; and

4. Has lived or worked in a developing country for at least one year.

5. Since the fellowship will take place in New York where the international community is mainly congregated, proficiency in the English language is a must.

Selection criteria

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

1. Ability to use the skills and networking opportunities gained from this Fellowship in a similar undertaking, such as working with a civil society organization that advocates for women, peace and security, for at least 2 years after completion of the Fellowship;

2. Ability to communicate effectively on women, peace and security issues; and

3. Ability and willingness to travel to conflict-affected countries.

Selection:

  • The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with GNWP for one year on its global advocacy in the UN to promote the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) 1325 and 1820 on Women, Peace and Security, and related laws and policies.
  • In addition, the applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in GNWP’s national and local initiatives such as the Localization of UNSCR 1325 and 1820, and Girl Ambassadors for Peace.
  • The Fellowship year will commence in May 2017 and end in May 2018.

  • It will cover roundtrip airfare from the country of origin to New York, room and board, health insurance, local transportation, and other personal expenses of the fellow.

The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships program at Stanford University aims to foster new ideas in journalism through innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership. Each year it brings up to 20 journalists and journalism innovators from the United States and around the world to spend the year at Stanford.

Immersed in the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of this region, they are inspired to let go of old assumptions and learn new ways of thinking and working.

JSK select fellows who identify and articulate a challenge in journalism that they want to work on addressing. We expect them to arrive in the program with more questions than answers and we seek people who are eager to experiment and to change course based on what they learn along the way.

JSK Fellows learn from, and collaborate with, each other. Diversity of background, experience and viewpoints is a fundamental value of our program. JSK enthusiastically include spouses, partners and families in fellowship life.

Requirements:

  • U.S. applicants for a JSK Fellowship ideally have at least seven years of full-time professional experience; international applicants ideally have at least five years

  • Journalism business and management executives – Those whose work influences editorial quality, such as publishers, general managers, and station managers.

Benefits:

  • To help fellows get the most out of their year, we provide several financial benefits, including a stipend of $65,000. In addition to the stipend, jsk provide fellows with additional funds designed to help with specific costs, such as housing, health insurance, child care and expenses related to work on their journalism challenges. (The amounts of these supplemental funds a fellow receives are based in part on family size and range from $13,000 to more than $50,000.)

2017 Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation, USA (Fully Funded)

The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting international program funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen Foundation. Seven three-week Institutes took place in San Diego, California in July between 2007 and 2016. This program has provided a unique University-based leadership experience and program in international cooperation. Again in July 2017, American men and women will join students from a variety of developing countries and regions of social strife to learn from experts and one another about conflict resolution and social entrepreneurship.

To date, 165 Hansen Alumni from 55 countries, have remained in contact, provided a network of support, and worked together on a number of social ventures funded by the Hansen Foundation. Hansen are happy to announce the Hansen Summer Institute will host its seventh group of young leaders in July 2017 at the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES).

A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an international community of young scholars who will use their summer experience as a foundation for creating lasting friendships and acquiring common practical understanding of a more peaceful future. Fellows receive hands-on training in team-building, public speaking, negotiation, mediation and working together to solve international problems.

Moreover, they learn to listen actively and to look for common interests and building realistic bridges of cooperation. Classroom training complements local excursions to San Diego attractions such as Sea World, the Zoo,  a 4th of July Independence Day parade and a harbor cruise. Fellows meet and greet academic, political and business leaders to refine their own ideas and skills, while learning about the “American Way of Life.” Students leave San Diego with a “leadership toolbox” they can apply appropriately to their future challenges and endeavors.

Participants have come from every corner of the globe, made life-long friendships and shaped their futures in a more positive direction. Why not you?

Requirements:

  • Upper division undergraduate with 2 years of college/university or graduate student with a professional interest in international relations, diplomacy, international economic development or related fields.
  • Students must be between the ages of 20- 25 on July 1, 2016.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership potential outside of the classroom in the community, nation or region.
  • Have an academic adviser verify in writing the candidates English proficiency.
  • Have a valid international passport with US visa if necessary by the time the program begins.

Benefits:

  • Accommodation and meals for the duration of the program, with shared rooms with participants of the same gender.
  • Transportation to/from the campus to all meetings and activities.
  • Program materials.
  • Certificate of Participation

NON-US Fellows also receive:

  • Round trip international air travel from the participant’s home town to San Diego, California.
  • DS-2019 – Student and Exchange Visitor (SEVIS) fee.

What is Not Provided:

  • Academic credit for participation in the Hansen Summer Institute (including and fees or costs associated with academic credit).

2016/2017 Harvard Academy Scholars Program for Postgraduate Study at Harvard University, USA (Fully Funded)

This program is open to all recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates.

The Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences (including history and law) with a command of the language, history, or culture of non-Western countries or regions. Their scholarship may elucidate domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, past or present.

The Academy Scholars are a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, curiosity, and originality, whose work in non-Western cultures or regions shows promise as a foundation for exceptional careers in major universities or international institutions.

Academy Scholars are appointed for two years by The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies and are provided time, guidance, and access to Harvard University facilities. They receive substantial financial and research assistance to undertake sustained projects of research and/or acquire accessory training in their chosen fields and areas. The Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior Harvard University faculty members, act as mentors to the Academy Scholars to help them achieve their intellectual potential.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Academy Scholars Program is open to scholars from all countries and citizenships.

We consider applicants who are already enrolled in or who have recently completed a PhD or equivalent doctoral program in the social sciences. Predoctoral candidates must have finished all field research and be in the writing stage of their dissertation at the time of application. If you have completed a PhD program, the PhD completion date must be within three years of our October 1 application deadline.

Worth:

Each year four to five Academy Scholars are named for two-year appointments. Academy Scholars are expected to reside in the Cambridge/Boston area for the duration of their appointments unless traveling for pre-approved research purposes.

Postdoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $67,000, and predoctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $31,000. This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, research assistants, and health insurance coverage. Some teaching is permitted but not required.

Journalist Fellowships to cover the HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P 2016) Conference in Chicago, USA (Fully Funded)

HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P 2016) will provide fellowships to attend and cover the conference to approximately 25 journalists from around the world. The journalist fellowship program is designed to help build journalist capacity to report on biomedical HIV prevention, and to generate high-profile media coverage of advances and challenges in prevention research, especially in communities that are heavily impacted by the epidemic.

As part of the fellowship, journalists will participate in a two-day, onsite workshop with leaders in various fields of biomedical prevention research, designed to help them better understand and report on research developments from the conference.

Benefits:

  • HIVR4P journalist fellows will receive conference registration, transportation to and from Chicago, accommodation, most meals, and a per diem.
  • This opportunity is highly selective. Successful journalist fellow candidates will have a track record of high-quality reporting on HIV/AIDS issues, the support of their media outlet to attend and report on the conference, and strong English language skills.

Application Requirements:

  • All applicants are required to submit a brief letter of intent, CV, editor recommendation, samples of published work relating to HIV/AIDS and other details.

The Sudanese and South Sudanese Youth Leader program brings Sudanese and South Sudanese peacebuilders between ages 18 and 35 to Washington, DC to be in residence at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) for four months.
The goal of the project is to support youth to gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to further their peacebuilding work and position themselves as stronger peacebuilding agents in their communities. USIP will bring one Sudanese and one South Sudanese leader in the spring of 2016 and another two leaders in the fall of 2016.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, socio-economic status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Please review all eligibility requirements before you apply. In order to be eligible to participate in the program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • Are of Sudanese or South Sudanese nationality and living Sudan or South Sudan at the time of application
  • Are between 18 and 35 years of age at the time of application;
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.; and
  • Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa
Program Requirements:
Youth leaders are expected to:
  • Complete at least two (2) USIP Academy courses;
  • youth leaders may take as many courses as they like, time-permitting
  • Write a short paper or blog post for the USIP website on a topic of his/her choice, based on the intersection of professional interests and USIP’s work
  • Meet with professionals at USIP, on Capitol Hill, and at other organizations in order to develop his/her professional network
  • Complete leadership development training
  • Plan and conduct a joint activity or meeting with the other youth leader in residence at USIP
  • Identify and participate in an activity related to his/her interests outside his/her work at
    the Institute. Previous activities have included joining church committees, working with the diaspora, and taking English classes.
  • Develop a leadership action plan, including a project that he/she designs to be implemented when he/she returns to his/her community, that he/she will present to either USIP staff or the Sudan and South Sudan Working Groups.
FINANCIAL PROVISIONS
There is no fee to apply to the Sudanese and South Sudanese Youth Leaders program. If you are selected for the program, the U.S. Institute of Peace will cover the following costs:
  • J-1 Visa expenses (including any travel expenses associated with obtaining the visa)
  • Round-trip travel from youth leader’s home to the U.S.
  • Housing costs in the U.S.
  • Stipend that will also cover health insurance, local travel, phone and internet, and any other living expenses

2016/2017 Jay Jordan IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program for Library & Information Science Professionals, USA (Fully Funded)

The Jay Jordan IFLA / OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program provides early career development and continuing education for library and information science professionals from countries with developing economies. The program is jointly sponsored by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and OCLC.
On an annual basis program sponsors select up to five individuals to participate in a
four-week intensive Fellowship program based at OCLC’s headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, USA.
Topics and issues include information technologies and their impact on libraries, library operations and management, and global cooperative librarianship.
Fellows visit selected libraries and cultural heritage institutions, meet with leading information professionals and observe OCLC’s governance structure in action. The Fellows gain insight into issues affecting global library cooperation and are exposed to the governance of a global library cooperative.
Key services and activities of program sponsors IFLA and OCLC are highlighted. Fellows have numerous opportunities to meet leading practitioners and discuss real-world solutions to the challenges facing libraries today.
Eligibility Requirements:
Promising library and information science professionals who are in
early stages of career development and who meet all of the qualifications are encouraged to apply. Applicants must:
  • Be employed in a library or information center.
  • Have a qualifying degree in library or information science. The qualifying degree may vary depending upon country of origin, but should be the general library or information science degree recognized in the country. Normally a PhD is not considered a qualifying degree, because the Fellowship program is targeted for early career librarians.
  • Have obtained the qualifying degree between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2015.
  • Have at least three years, but no more than eight years, of library or information science experience . For the 2017 program, applicants must have library or information science experience that begins no earlier than January 1, 2008 and no later than January 1, 2013.
  • Be a legal national from a qualifying country (see list of Qualifying Countries) and be working as a librarian or information science professional in that country.
  • Read and speak English proficiently.
  • Be prepared to work as a team member with other Fellows and to participate as required in this fast-paced program.
  • Have a valid passport.
  • Be able to obtain documentation permitting legal entry into the United States or any other countryrequired for program participation.

Award:

The award provides the following for each Fellow:
  • Airfare, coach class, from the recipient’s home country to the United States and return trip to the recipient’s home country (transportation to and from the airport in the recipient’s home country is the responsibility of the award recipient).
  • Note: All travel arrangements must be made through OCLC’s travel agency.
  • Transportation related to library visits (arranged by OCLC).
  • Lodging (arranged by OCLC).
  • Subsistence, including meals.
  • Medical insurance (arranged by OCLC). The award does not provide for (and award recipient is responsible for):
Any costs associated with preparing and submitting an application.
  • Any costs associated with obtaining a valid passport, passport photo,visas, document processing, or other costs associated with entering the United States or any other country legally except as noted, above.

The Princeton Society of Fellows, an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and selected natural sciences, invites applications for the 2016-2019 Fellowship competition.

Eligibility

  • PhD degree requirements.

a) Candidates already holding the PhD degree at time of application:
You must have received your degree between January 1, 2014 and September 15, 2015.
b) Candidates who are ABD (all but dissertation) at time of application:
If you will not meet the September 15, 2015, deadline for receipt of PhD but are expected to have fulfilled all conditions for the degree, including defense and filing of dissertation, by June 15, 2016, you may still apply for a postdoctoral fellowship provided you have completed a substantial portion of the dissertation (approximately half).

Fellowships will be awarded to candidates at the beginning of their academic career. Candidates must have already demonstrated outstanding scholarly achievement and excellence in teaching.

 

  • US citizens and non-US citizens, regardless of race, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability, are eligible to apply.
  • Fellows must reside in or near Princeton during the academic year of their fellowship term in order that they can attend weekly seminars and other events on campus.

Worth:

  • Four three-year Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded this year.
  • The stipend for each of the three years of the fellowship will be approximately $82,000.
  • In addition, fellows are provided with a shared office, a personal computer, a research account of $5,000 a year, access to university grants, benefits and other resources.

Fellows are expected to reside in or near Princeton during the academic year in order to attend weekly seminars and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Society.

The Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington internship program brings two international students per year to Washington, D.C., to work at the Scripps Howard News Service for a semester.

The internship is designed to give international students an opportunity to cover events in the U.S. capital, as well as to report and write feature stories for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire. Stories written by Scripps Howard interns may be published in newspapers across the United States.

The internship is sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation, which strives to advance the cause of a free press through support of excellence in journalism, quality journalism education and professional development. International participants in the program are recruited and selected by the International Center for Journalists, which provides training and other assistance to journalists across the globe.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The internship is open to undergraduate journalism or communications students who intend to pursue careers in journalism after graduation.
  • Interns must be fluent in both spoken and written English.
  • Interns who are selected in the program will work in one of two periods: Early January to mid-April or September to December.

Task

  • Interns report for work each day at the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire, which is housed in the same office as the Scripps Washington Bureau, blocks from the White House in downtown Washington.
  • They report, write, take photos and shoot videos of breaking news and news features. Interns also talk with experts at the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Student Press Law Center, the Washington Post, the Pentagon and others to better understand how to cover the news.
  • Interns should be prepared to cover government, politics, breaking news, business and features.

Benefits:

  • Interns are paid a stipend of $3,346 for the 14-week spring and fall terms and $2,390 for the 10-week summer program.
  • Students are housed in furnished apartments paid for by the foundation.

2016 CIPE /Atlas Corp Think Tank LINKS Fellowship for Young Professionals from Developing Countries, USA (Fully Funded)

CIPE and Atlas Corps have jointly launched the new Think Tank LINKS (Leaders, Innovators, and Knowledge Sharing) Fellowship. This innovative, all-expenses paid program is an opportunity for talented young professionals from developing countries with strong research backgrounds to shadow leading U.S. think tanks for six months.
In addition, Fellows will be enrolled in a professional development training program and join a growing network of nonprofit leaders from around the world.
Eligibility:

CIPE and Atlas Corps are looking for qualified candidates who have:

  • Demonstrated research background relating to issues of democracy and/or economic reform.
  • Bachelors degree or higher, preferably in Economics, Public Policy, Finance, or a related field .
  • At least two (2) years of professional experiences with proven record of research-based work.
  • Proficiency in English (both in writing and speaking).
  • Age 35 or younger.
  • Currently working for a think tank, policy research institution, or a similar organization.

After the initial screening by CIPE and Atlas Corps, top applicants will be interviewed and selected by the respective Host Organization’s staff. Preference will be given to non-OECD applicants.

Location:
  • Fellows will be based at leading think tanks in Washington, DC area for six months (January through July).
  • They will serve 40 hours per week at their host think tanks, focused on a mutually agreed-upon research topic that relates to democratic and/or economic reforms.
  • Fellows are expected to publish their research during the program through articles, blogs, and presentations.

Logistics:

  • CIPE and Atlas Corps will provide Fellows with logistical support regarding visa, health insurance, stipend, and international travel.
  • Fellows will also receive a monthly living stipend that covers basic housing, food, and transportation for one person.

Responsibilities of Think Tank LINKS Fellows:

  • Conduct research on a topic that relates to democratic or economic reforms.
  • Produce research results that meet the thematic and quality criteria set by CIPE, Atlas Corps, and the host think tank.
  • Contribute to CIPE’s Development Blog (www.cipe.org/blog) to highlight key findings.
  • Participate in Atlas Corps Global Leadership Lab training sessions.
  • Attend orientation, roundtable discussions, and other activities as required by CIPE, Atlas Corps, and the host think tank.
  • If selected, pay a USD $250 participation fee, which will be returned upon successful completion of the fellowship.
  • Return to home country after the Fellowship.
