All-Africa Postharvest Technologies and Innovations Challenge 2017 – Nairobi, Kenya (US$35,000 Prize)

Farmers, academics, entrepreneurs, and policymakers will gather at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, from March 28 to 31, 2017, for a conference on Reducing Postharvest Food Losses: Sustainable Solutions for Africa. Organizers of the event expect more than 300 people to convene with hopes to identify practical solutions to reduce food losses and waste in Africa. The conference is the first of its kind on the continent and will provide an excellent platform for all stakeholders in the food supply chain. Attendees will be able to learn, share information, build partnerships, and innovate with others concerned about food waste.

Established by the World Food Preservation Center, LLC, in conjunction with the University of Nairobi, a consortium of other universities, and the Kenyan Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation, the conference will feature distinguished keynote speakers with vast practical knowledge and experience on the subject of food waste.

Organizers also announced the All-Africa Postharvest Technologies and Innovations Challenge, 2017, which seeks to showcase emerging solutions with realistic scale-up potential and strengthen ties between entrepreneurs and investors. It is open to individuals and organizations from or working in Africa and serves as an opportunity to leverage technology to reduce postharvest waste. The entries should either be in testing or at market-ready stages of development.

Award

The top 10 innovators will pitch their solutions in Kenya and receive US$35,000. Presentations will take place during a session of all stakeholders at the three-day conference.

The Pitch:

After hearing the top 10 entries during the three days of indoor sessions, attendees will experience the realities of the food waste scenario in Kenya.
Conference attendees will travel to farms, markets, packing houses, processing plants, and packaging facilities to interact with and observe various stakeholders in the food supply chain.

At the conference, current technologies, strategies, and policies will be showcased that have reduced postharvest losses throughout Africa. Organizers anticipate that positive steps will be taken to reduce food waste during the conference. Some of their attainable goals include producing a comprehensive action plan for Africa, implementing new technologies, identifying relevant policy interventions, improving agricultural skills gaps, and providing a platform for networking to occur. Overall, this gathering will raise awareness about African food losses and waste.

African Leadership Center Peace and Security Fellowship 2016 for African Women (Fully Funded to UK)

The African Leadership Centre (ALC) was established in Kenya in June 2010 as a joint initiative of King’s College London and the University of Nairobi. The ALC is pleased to announce a call for applicationsa for the Peace and Security Fellowship for African Women for 2016/2017.

This Fellowship is an intellectual and financial award to those who are able to portray convincing demonstrable or potential capacity to bring about intellectual, policy or other change in their field. The Fellowship is a postgraduate non-degree programme, and does not lead to an academic qualification.
Since October 2011 the ALC, Conflict, Security and Development Group, King’s College London and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Nairobi, have delivered the Peace and Security Fellowships for African Women in partnership.
The ALC aims to build a new community of leaders generating cutting edge knowledge on peace, security and development. To this end, the ALC undertakes to do the following:

Create an enabling environment for ideas that are grounded in African realities;
Provide space for interaction with role models;
Build capacity for independent thinking;
Expand the knowledge base to develop transformational ideas that can be nurtured to create visions of change;
Create opportunities to transfer knowledge to achieve multiplier effects for communities;
Connect with processes nationally, regionally and globally, especially in the field of peace and security; and
Build lasting partnerships that will maintain an African-led vision of change.

The Fellowships bring together African women in the early stages of their careers to undertake a carefully designed training programme in conflict, security and development. This training is followed by an attachment to an African Regional Organisation or a Centre of Excellence to acquire practical experience in the field of peace and security.

It is intended that this project will train African women to develop a better understanding of African peace and security issues, in order to increase their participation in conflict management processes and other areas of security concerns for Africans.

The Peace and Security Fellowship Programme for African Women is designed to expose professional African women at early stages of their careers to the complexities of conflict, security and development. The exposure is to equip them for careers in this field by developing their expertise to generate African-led ideas and processes of change for addressing challenges on the African continent. The Fellowships aim especially to ground this expertise on peace and security in integrity and the pursuit of excellence.

The Fellowship is conceived against a number of background factors:

First is the comparatively low number of African women exposed to rigorous academic writing and policy analysis in the field of peace and security especially when compared with those involved in human rights and development issues.
Second is the need to assist African women to meet the demands of the Beijing process and the subsequent UN Security Council Resolution 1325 that calls for the inclusion of women at all decision making levels in “all national, regional and international institutions and mechanisms for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts”.

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates must be female citizens of African countries.
Successful candidates must hold valid travel documents prior to acceptance.
Candidates must have knowledge of, or experience of women’s rights, gender and development issues.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to contribute to work on peace and security in Africa
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to the core values of the programme: Independent thinking; Integrity; Pursuit of Excellence; and a Value for all forms of Diversity
Candidates must have a relevant institutional base and be endorsed by an organisation with which they have been involved for at least two years. Exceptional candidates without such organisational ties may be given special consideration
Candidates must have a demonstrable plan for how to utilise knowledge gained in the Fellowship upon return to their countries and organisations
Candidates must hold a Master’s or Bachelors degree with an equivalent level of professional experience.
Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English

Programme Details:

This is a one-year Fellowship, divided into two six-month phases. The first phase will be delivered at the ALC/ King’s College London. During the training, the Fellows will be encouraged to engage critically with the discourse on conflict, security and development in Africa.
They will also visit and study institutions working in the field of peace and security in Africa and Europe. This phase will include a simulation seminar series during which mock conflict management situations will be practiced.
In the second phase, Fellows will be attached to an African regional organisation or Centre of Excellence to undertake practical work in the field of peace and security including peace and conflict management processes.

Fellowship Worth:

This is a fully funded* opportunity, not including any visa application and processing costs. Funds will be made available to the Fellows to cover tuition, subsistence in the UK and Africa, and all travel expenses related to the programme in both phases.
While funding will be made available to pay for accommodation, successful applicants are expected to find their own accommodation both in the UK and Africa. Fellows are strongly advised to make all necessary accommodation arrangements prior to taking up their positions on the Fellowship Programme.

* This project is supported by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), the Allan & Nesta Trust and the Ferguson Charitable Trust. Fellowship opportunities are subject to continued funding support.

Applicants to the Fellowship Programme must make individual successful applications to the MSc Security, Leadership and Society by 17:00 hrs, Friday 18 March 2016. The MSc is a separate but parallel application procedure handled by King’s College London, rather than ALC. To be accepted on to the Fellowship, applicants must be accepted on both the MSc programme by King’s and the Fellowship Programme by ALC.

2015 Pathways Leadership for Progress International Leadership Training Programme in Kenya

PATHWAYS Leadership for Progress is a leadership program and is now accepting applications from highly qualified undergraduate students with financial need commencing studies in October 2015. The goals of the PATHWAYS program are to

develop the student’s leadership ability through supporting their efforts to improve their community,
facilitate the education and encourage career development of individuals who are highly qualified academically, motivated, and dedicated to improving their country,
provide mentoring to establish the future leader in his/her career and to assure the successful implementation of the community project and
foster lifelong civic-minded collaborations among youth from different ethnicities.

Along with participation in this program is the availability fee assistance to those accepted to the University of Nairobi or Kenyatta University main campus (only for students under the regular/module I programme)

Requirements

KCSE overall grade average of B+ or higher.
Demonstrated financial need.
Strong interpersonal, communication and educational skills.
Written project proposal and letter of support from the community group
Three letters of recommendation from three different people in leadership positions who are familiar with your abilities and character (e.g. secondary school teachers/educational professionals, local administrators) (attach).
Copies of KCPE/KCSE official results certificate (attach).
Estimated university expenses and a cost share plan
Recent photo of student (will not be returned).
Also include:
Copies of acceptance letters from UoN/Kenyatta U (main campus only) or completed application form (attach).
Note: Preference will be given to students from disadvantaged groups such as AIDS orphans and girls and applicants born in poor outlying counties. Finalists will be asked to appear for an interview.

Please be mindful that this is a leadership program not a scholarship.
Those selected will be expected to obtain good grades, work on their community projects, and contribute to the successful running of the PATHWAYS program while in university and throughout their lives.
Success in meeting these expectations will be required for continuation in the program.

Support:

The program will cover most of the student’s university expenses toward a Bachelor’s degree not covered by any government or private grants for 2 semesters per year contingent upon satisfactory progress each year.
The student is expected to offer a cost share plan to outline how much they can contribute to their university expenses.
The student is also expected to apply to PATHWAYS for a small grant to support progress on their project annually.

2015 Pivot East Competition for East African Entrepreneurs/Startups

PIVOT East is organized by m:lab East Africa – a consortium comprising iHub, eMobilis, University of Nairobi and the World Wide Web Foundation. The competition aims to catalyse the growth of mobile startups, so as to amplify and consolidate the gains of East Africa’s Mobile developer and entrepreneurship ecosystem. The key objective for this year’s event is “to facilitate discovery of the next wave of high potential mobile startups in the region”

Applications to compete in 2015 will be entered as detailed startup profiles which describe the customer pain, the startups solution, revenue streams, team composition and commitment, market traction, short-term projections and milestones among other aspects. The overall startup profile will be used by the competition judges who will mostly be investors to score the potential of the startup to become a sustainable high growth enterprise.

Eligibility criteria to participate in PIVOT East 2015:

Participating startups must be domiciled in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia or DR Congo
Participating startups must indicate details of at least two members of their team in their application profile
Competitors selected to the final 25 list must have set up a legal entity (business name, limited company etc) for their business by 30th April 2015. Competitors with legal entities already set up will have an added advantage at all judging stages.
Decisions of the judging committees at all competition stages will be final.

Introduction

This Fellowship covers an 18-month period, comprising of a rigorous training programme on peace, security and development, which includes a 12 – Month Master’s (M.Sc.) programme at King’s College London and an attachment to an African University to undertake an independent research project.

The Fellowship programme is designed to expose junior African scholars to the complexities of Security and Development issues facing the African continent. The Carne gie Corporation of New York has provided funding for this programme.

Peace, Security and Development Fellowships for African Scholars 2013– 2014 Academic Year

Purpose

The programme seeks to nurture junior African Scholars interested in pursuing a career in Peace, Security & Development, and to equip them with the skills necessary to achieve this. Through taught courses as well as rigorous mentoring activities, the programme will accomplish the following objectives:

1. Increase the pool of African experts in the area of peace, security and development working to generate African-led ideas to address the security and development challenges on the continent.

2. Foster studies on Peace and Security issues within African institutions of higher learning, and ensure that academic institutions have better access to knowledge and expertise on these issues.

3. Inject skills within regional and national centres of excellence so that they can strengthen their research capacity on peace, security and development topics with independent and critical approaches.

4. Contribute to expertise on peace and security that is grounded in the pursuit of excellence and integrity.

Eligibility

In order to be considered eligible, candidates must have citizenship in an

African country.

Successful candidates must hold valid travel documents prior to acceptance.

The competition is open only to junior faculty members based in universities in Africa from departments of political science; international relations; history, law, development studies, peace, security and conflict studies, and related departments.
Candidates need to demonstrate an interest in pursuing careers in the field of Peace, Security and Development. Previous study or engagement with the issues of Security & Development is not required but

Candidates must demonstrate a basic familiarity with these issues. Candidates must additionally be able to demonstrate that they are committed to contributing to work on peace and security in Africa.

Candidates will be expected to have a clear plan on how to utilise knowl edge gained in the Fellowship up on returning to their countries and academic institutions.

Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate the following values during the application phase:
Independent thinking;
Integrity;
Pursuit of excellence; and a value for all forms of diversity.

Programme Activities

The Programme is divided into two phases:

Phase 1: The first phase consists of a 12-month training programme

based at King’s College London. This phase will comprise of regular group ment

oring sessions with renowned academics, policy analysts and practitioners as well as a taught Master’s programme in Security, Leadership and Society, which will be taught at King’s College London.

For a large part of this phase, Fellows will be based at King’s College London, with the African Leadership Centre (ALC) in London .

In addition Fellows will spend brief periods at the Africa Leadership Centre,

Nairobi and Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi,

where they will be required to undertake research and deliver research papers on peace, security and development in Africa.

Institutional Visits: During the 12- month period at King’s College London, Fellows will undertake visits within and outside the UK to academic, policy and resea

rch institutions working on issues of Peace, Security & Development

Phase 2:

For the second phase, Fellows will be attached to select partner universities in Africa, for a period of 6months. During this time Fellows will work as faculty members and contribute to academic and policy research among other activities.

This phase is designed to encourage the dissemination and exchange of ideas on the issues that were studied during the first phase of the programme.

Mentoring:

During both phases, Fellows will have access to the programme’s network of mentors, in the form of regular group mentoring and training on key thematic issues. One-on-one mentoring sessions will also be encouraged, so as to help guide students through the programme.

Research Project :

Up on returning home to their universities after the attachment phase, Fellows will be expected to conduct a research project on a key aspect of Peace, Security & Development, and to produce a research report and a policy brief from their research .

These policy briefs will be published and disseminated amongst institutions of higher learning in the region. This phase of research and writing will last for 6 months.

Terms of the Fellowship

1) Application to King’s College London :

Successful applicants will have the status of full time MS.c. students in Security, Leadership and Society . It is necessary for applicants to the Fellowship Programme to make individual successful applications to the M.Sc. Security, Leadership and Society by 17:00 hrs, Friday 19 April 2013.

2) Student Visas : All international students at King’s College London will be subject to the immigration rules of the UK, which can be found on the King’s College London web page for obtaining student visas:

The offer of a place on the programme will be subject to successful candidates obtaining a student visa. Failure to obtain a visa to enter the UK automatically invalidates the offer of a place on the programme with no consequences to King’s College London.

Responsibility for processing all visa applications rests solely with successful candidates. The implementing organizations will provide necessary documentation as needed.

3) Expectant/Nursing mothers : Given the intense nature of the programme including its short phases in different locations as well as necessary extensive travel, successful applicants that are expectant or nursing mothers while enc ouraged to apply, will be advised to defer their admission to the programme.

4) Medical Exam : Successful applicants will be required to undergo medical examinations at recommended venues prior to taking up their positions.

5) Programme completion/Return to base : The programme will last a total of 18 months. During phases 1 and 2, Fellows will be expected to make full time commitment to the programme. It is a condition that successful candidates shall return to their base or home countries at the end of the programme.

Funding

This is a fully funded opportunity, and funds will be made available to cover M.Sc

.tuition, subsistence in the U.K. and Africa, accommodation, research- related costs, and travel expenses related to the programme.

However, successful applicants are expected to find their own accommodation both in the U.K. and Africa.

In the U.K. successful candidates will be able to apply for University of London accommodation, and they can also make their own accommodation arrangements.
