Canon Collins Scholarships 2016/2017 for Masters Study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

Canon Collins Trust offers scholarships to support taught masters degree programmes at certain UK universities.

School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London
Canon Collins Trust partner with SOAS to co-fund two scholarships annually. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be applying for a full-time one-year taught masters course in any subject.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field

University of Sussex
Canon Collins Trust partner with the Mandela Scholarship Fund at the University of Sussex to fund three awards annually. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be applying for a full-time one-year taught masters course in any subject.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field

Queen Mary, University of London
The Simon and Deirdre Gaskell Scholarship at Queen Mary

The scholarship at Queen Mary is funded by Simon and Deirdre Gaskell and limited to the MSc in Global Public Health and Policy. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be applying for the MSc in Global Public Health and Policy
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field

University of Edinburgh, MSc in African Studies

This scholarship is co-funded by Canon Collins and the University of Edinburgh. It is limited to the MSc in African Studies. Applicants must:

  • Be a national of, and normally resident in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be in possession of a good Honours degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be applying for the MSc in African Studies
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant file

Scholarship Worth:

  • All these scholarships cover full tuition fees, a monthly stipend, a return economy flight, a settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.

Please read the guidelines   carefully before applying. Applicants must apply to their chosen university separately and awards are conditional on the applicant being offered a place at the relevant university.

Cultures of Resistance Scholarships 2016 for Study in SOAS, University of London (£25,500 Worth)

Thanks to a collaboration between the Cultures of Resistance Network, the SOAS Students’ Union, International Students’ House and the American Friends of SOAS (AFSOAS), two postgraduate scholarships are available in 2016-17 at SOAS, University of London.

Worth

  • Each scholarship is valued at £25,500 in total, funded by Cultures of Resistance and the SOAS Students’ Union. Fees will be deducted from this amount and the remainder will be used toward maintenance.
  • In addition, each scholar will benefit from free accommodation at International Student House (ISH) and some food vouchers to be spent in the ISH restaurant.

Candidate Criteria

Although priority will be given to students resident in Afghanistan, Burma/Myanmar, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Iraq, Kashmir, Kurdistan, the Palestinian Territories (West Bank and Gaza), Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tibet, Western Sahara, Yemen, West Papua and Papua, the scholarship programme is also open to students resident in the following countries/territories:

Algeria, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bir Tawil, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Chechen Republic, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, East Timor, Egypt, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Golan Heights, Georgia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Kyrgyz Republic, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe

  • Candidates must hold (or be expected to obtain) a good honours degree, preferably first class, from a UK institution or overseas equivalent.
  • Candidates should describe in their personal statement of their admission application:
  1. how the political situation in your home country, especially violent conflict, war, poverty, and/or military occupation, has shaped your experiences and ambitions in life.
  2. how these experiences have affected your interest in human rights, social justice, and grassroots democracy.
  3. what academic and social issues you plan to explore during your studies at SOAS.
  4. what you hope to do upon completion of your program at SOAS.
  5. what the most pressing problems are in your home country and how the pursuit of education at SOAS in your chosen field would promote human rights, social justice, equality, and the enrichment of civil society in your home country.
  • Candidates must have an offer of admission to pursue a full time eligible programme by the scholarship closing date.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2016.  If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.

The scholarships will benefit people from countries that have been affected by wars and extreme poverty. This scholarship embodies the values of the Cultures of Resistance Network, which seeks to empower and enrich communities – especially those that have been affected by armed conflict – through the promotion of human rights, justice for victims of war crimes and the enrichment of civil society and robust grassroots democracy.

Governance for Development in Africa Initiative 2015 Residential School,Marrakech, Morocco (Fully Funded)

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation in association with School of Orientals and African Studies (SOAS) and the Centre of African Studies, University of London is organising a Residential School in Marrakech, Morocco, 22nd-25th March 2015

The residential school is for 20 participants who are policy makers, academics, researchers or civil society representatives from any African country who will gain, through this training, new ideas and knowledge on the broad issue of governance and development. Applications are encouraged  from a wide range of backgrounds.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants should have at least a Masters degree in areas related to Governance or 5 years professional experiences in fields relevant to the theme of Governance and Development in Africa.
  • Preference is given to applicants from North and West Africa.
  • The official language of the School is English, however some sessions will be in French, therefore applicants with a knowledge of both English and French are encouraged to apply.
Cost:
  • All costs for successful applicants, including economy flights, accommodation and meals, will be covered.
  • No per diem.

  • 2 page max CV (including email address for correspondence)
  • One reference letter ( can be emailed directly by referee)
  • Proposal of max 1500 words outlining research interest and /or professional background and how the applicant will benefit from attending the Residential School

2014 Ferguson scholarships for African Students to sudy in UK.

The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable trust is offering the Ferguson Scholarships for African Students at School of Oriental African Studies,University of London in UK, Ferguson scholarships have been established for African Students (African nationals and resident in Africa), who wish to undertake a taught masters course at SOAS

Each Ferguson Scholarship is valued at £20,619 in total and lasts for one year. The scholarships can be used for fees and the remainder towards maintenance. The Ferguson scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit

Students offered a Ferguson Scholarship must take it up in the academic year 2014/15 and it cannot be carried forward to a later year.

  • Full-time MA International Studies and Diplomacy
  • Full-time MA Social Anthropology of Development
Candidate Criteria

Applicants should:

  • Be nationals of and resident in an African country
  • Hold an undergraduate degree at the first class level
  • Have a confirmed, unconditional offer of admission to pursue one of the eligible programmes at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline.
Candidate Assessment
  • Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by an Advisory Panel consisting of three academic members.
  • The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application.  Selectors will be looking at the degree results and also at academic references, statement and other relevant information.

  • Applications must be received by 17:00 (GMT) on 1 May 2014.

2014/15 Commonwealth Shared Scholarships at the Institute of Education, University of London.

The programmes included in this scheme are:

  • Education and International Development MA
  • Education, Gender and International Development MA
  • Education, Health Promotion and International Development MA
  • Educational Planning, Economics and International Development MA
  • Development Education MA

Eligibility:

Candidates are normally expected to hold a first degree at either first class or upper second-class level.

You will be asked to certify in writing that you:

i) are a national of a Commonwealth developing country, and not at present living or studying in a developed country;

ii) have not undertaken studies lasting one year or more in a developed country;

iii) are yourself, or through your family, unable to pay to study in the United Kingdom;

iv) will return to your home country as soon as your award comes to an end. The commission will only consider requests to extend leave to remain in the UK post-award for those wishing to move from masters to PhD study. Strict conditions will apply.
