Yale Fox International Fellowship 2019 graduate student exchange program (Fully Funded to United States)

The Yale Fox International Fellowship was established in 1988 by Mr. Joseph Carrère Fox (Yale Class of 1938). The Fellowship has thirteen exchange partners worldwide and over five hundred alumni network.

The goal of the Fox International Fellowship is to enhance mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries by promoting international scholarly exchanges and collaborations among the next generation of leaders. To accomplish this goal, the program seeks to identify and nurture those students who are interested in harnessing scholarly knowledge to respond to the world’s most pressing challenges. For these reasons, we especially welcome students enrolled in the social sciences and kindred disciplines in the professional schools. Yale University jointly pursues these aims with 20 of the world’s leading universities in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. There are more than 500 alumni in the extensive Fox Fellowship network.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Fellowship aims to enable independent research for Masters and Doctoral studies students from the various partnering universities. The research is done within designated fields of study and promote a culture of collaboration and solution-oriented knowledge. The Fox Fellowship is NOT open to postdoctoral applicants and international student proposing projects in their home country are NOT eligible.

The candidate’s overall programme of studies or degree may come from different disciplines and departments as long as their project focuses on one or more of these fields:
• international relations and global affairs,
• environmental policy,
• public health,
• business and finance,
• social sciences,
• economics,
• political science,
• law, and
• contemporary history.

Personal characteristics: The candidate must demonstrate commitment to serious research and also capacity for leadership and civic engagement in the larger community. The candidate clearly understands and has demonstrated commitment to being a “citizen ambassador.”

Strength of academic achievement: The candidate must demonstrate both excellence in relevant coursework as well as strong evidence of research ability in the field of endeavor they are proposing as their Fox Fellowship project.

Field of focus: A strong and specific research project with a focus in international relations and global affairs, environmental policy, public health, business and finance, social sciences, economics, political science, law, and contemporary history, with preference for topics of contemporary, applied and/or institutional relevance to enhancing the world’s peace and prosperity. The candidate’s overall program of studies or degree may come from different disciplines and departments as long as their project focuses on one or more of these fields.

Language skills: The candidate’s language skills must be sufficient both to succeed in their research project and to engage in the intellectual and social community of the host university and their colleagues in the Fox International Fellowship at Yale. Candidates for Fox Fellowships at Yale University have to provide recent TOEFL or IELTS scores demonstrating proficiency in English conversation, reading and writing. This requirement is waived only for applicants from partner institutions where English is the primary language of instruction.

UCT Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Scholarships 2019 for Undergraduate African Students (Fully Funded).

The Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Leadership Programme was established at the University of Cape Town in 2014 through a gift donated by Professor Klaus-Jürgen Bathe of Massachusetts (USA). The primary goal of the Programme is to produce graduates with outstanding leadership qualities and with a strong sense of social justice, who will go on to play leading and significant roles in business, government, industry and civil society in South Africa and on the African continent. The Programme specifically aims to find, educate and nurture UCT undergraduate students towards becoming leaders who are able to tackle issues at the national level and uplift their countries for the betterment of all citizens. The recipients of the award will be known as the Klaus-Jürgen Bathe Scholars.

Requirements

  • Selection will be made from students who show potential to be national leaders of tomorrow, and who will make a significant impact in business, government, industry or civil society.
  • Scholars will be selected primarily on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated leadership potential. Financial circumstances will be taken into account where appropriate, and in this regard, all applicants are required to provide information about family income on the application form.
  • Applicants should be academically outstanding. If applying for the scholarship in the first year of enrolment at UCT, they must have passed all first-semester courses with an average mark of at least 65%; if applying in second or subsequent years, they must have a cumulative grade aggregate of at least 65%.
  • The Programme is open to undergraduate students enrolled in any of the six Faculties of UCT. It will provide support only for undergraduate studies; postgraduate students are not eligible
  • Students of any nationality on the African continent may apply, but preference will be given first to South African citizens and permanent residents, followed by nationals of other African countries. A condition for candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of South Africa is that they must demonstrate a commitment to either (i) remain in South Africa and serve the country for at least 10 years after the completion of their studies, or (ii) move to another country in the African Union and serve that country while working closely with South Africa in addressing the problems faced by the continent as a whole
  • Students should only apply for this scholarship when there is only two years of the undergraduate degree programme remaining. This means that students doing a 3-year degree should apply in first year, those doing a 4-year degree should apply in their second year, and so forth. Exceptional circumstances aside, the scholarship cannot be held for periods of study of less than two years; neither can it be awarded for more than two years.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview, and will be required to make a presentation as part of the selection process. They will be required to demonstrate why they are deserving of the scholarship, and to explain how they see themselves playing a leadership role in South Africa (or Africa) in the future.
  • Scholars will receive full financial support for the remaining two years of their studies. This will cover tuition fees, UCT residential charges (including meals), as well as an allowance for books, stationery, a laptop, transport and travel costs. The total amount paid may be reduced at the discretion of the Programme Director if the scholar is already receiving some other scholarship or bursary.
  • It is envisaged that scholars will take the normal courses of their degree programs, plus two additional UCT courses (one per year) intended to develop leadership attributes. In the second year of the scholarship, scholars will be required to spend up to 6 weeks attached to an approved organization in South Africa, Germany or the USA, gaining exposure to sound leadership practices.

Prospective applicants must carefully read through the following notes to make sure that they satisfy all eligibility criteria and are agreeable to the conditions of the award.

Scholarship Criteria, Eligibility, Selection Process & Conditions of Award

University Fellowships to develop Southern Africa’s future responsible entrepreneurs

The Foundation offers the exceptional Allan Gray Fellowship to Southern Africa’s pioneering bright young students. This initiative aims to develop students, known as Allan Gray Candidate Fellows, into Southern Africa’s future high impact responsible entrepreneurs.

Every year, the Foundation selects the best and most ambitious Grade 12 and first year university students from Southern Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland to join its vibrant community of Allan Gray Candidate Fellows.

Prerequisites
  • Indication of entrepreneurial flair and passion
  • Citizenship of South Africa
  • Belief in the future of the country
  • Ambassador of the Foundation’s intended profile, namely demonstrating:Spirit of Significance, Intellectual Imagination, Achievement Excellence,Personal Initiative and Courageous Commitment Studying for a Commerce, Science (excluding Medicine), Engineering, Law or Humanities (majoring in Politics, Philosophy OR Economics) degree at the University of Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, University of Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University,Rhodes University, University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, University of the Free State, University of Pretoria or TSiBA

  • The Allan Gray Fellowship consists of an Entrepreneurial and Personal Development Programme, as part of a full undergraduate university scholarship. The Fellowship Programme runs throughout the year, alongside tertiary studies and includes seminars, guest speakers, experiential learning activities and project based deliverables.
  • The Fellowship also includes Mentoring both from individually assigned Foundation employed staff and a Mentor with specific industry experience, that will assist the Candidate Fellow in their development.

The Masters Public Health, Community Eye Health, aims to provide students with the practical skills to develop and manage eye care programmes with an emphasis on meeting eye care needs in Africa. It also enables participants to undertake appropriate clinical and operational research to inform the practical planning and management for VISION  2020: The Right to Sight.

To support the training of eye health professionals with strong public health skills, the Consortium offers scholarships for candidates from low- and middle-income African Commonwealth countries who have been accepted to study for a Masters Public Health, Community Eye Health at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

2015 African Pathways Doctoral Scholarship Programme for Non-South African Students to study in South Africa.

The National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS), in association with the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)

The NIHSS has partnered with CODESRIA to develop the African Pathways Programme scholarship. The aim of the scholarship is in line with the mandates of the Institute and Council to promote and facilitate research in the humanities and social sciences as well as to explore new vistas in pan-African scholarship.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified non-South African students to study full time towards a doctoral degree in the humanities and social sciences at any public university in South Africa. The scholarship will be allocated to students whose research is focused on their country or a comparative project on the following broad themes:

  • Pre and post-colonial states, institutions and local experiences
  • Histories and legacies of liberation struggles
  • Regional integration, new development and economic alternatives
  • International political economy and the role of African humanities
  • Heritage, identity and culture (including literature, performance, art and musicology)

Eligbility:

  • Only non-South African citizens (in any country in African) from designated groups, with a preference to women.

The chosen candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • A successful completion of a Master’s degree, or entering the first year of PhD/doctoral study following an upgrade from a Master’s registration, or registered for PhD study in first year of enrollment
  • Academic merit
    - Coherence and feasibility of the proposed research project and contribution of the project to the body of knowledge in the field

Scholarship Worth

  • The value of the award is R120 000 in the first year.
  • Annual renewals are subject to proof of satisfactory progress.
  • The maximum period for the award is three years.
  • Successful candidates will be expected to sign a contract as regards conditions of the scholarship.

- c. Name of institution at which you wish to complete your PhD studies full time.

- 2. Letter of confirmation by the prospective department, faculty and or university that you will be registered for PhD study.
- 3. A motivation letter (not longer than one A4 page – 500 words)
- 4. A research proposal outlining the problem statement, methodology, feasibility of your study and the contribution it will make to the body of knowledge in the particular field of study
- 5. Two letters of recommendation from academics who are familiar with your work, of which one must be the supervisor of your Master’s thesis
- 6. A certified copy of your full academic transcript/s

Student Energy’s newest initiative will bring energy to even more of the world’s students and future leaders. Regional Student Energy Summits will occur June 19-20, 2014 simultaneously on 5 continents. The events will each target 100-300 multi-disciplinary postsecondary students from the region

Student Energy is a global not-for-profit that is creating the next generation of energy leaders committed to transitioning the world to a sustainable future.

Africa Student Energy Summit (ASES) is powered by the Student Energy movement and supported by the Green Shift Africa Forum. This is the first time on African soil when a summit that directly targets young African leaders would be addressing energy issues.

The summit would attract about 300 student delegates from different parts of the continent and beyond, professionals and leaders of industry in the energy sector, academia as well as policy makers and political leaders would converge to debate, deliberate and proffer solutions to one of Africa’s most challenging problems.

“More than a century after the light bulb was invented most of the African continent is still in the dark after nightfall. School children often cannot read after dusk, businesses cannot grow, and clinics cannot refrigerate medicine or vaccines, and industries are idled hampering economic growth, jobs, and livelihoods”

ASES 2014 would be partnering with energy industries and institutions of higher learning to realize this objective. Captains of industries, investors, policy makers and politician would play major roles in this summit.

The Association of South African Women in Science and Engineering (SAWISE) and The Hope Network invites female students entering their Honours level/ 4th year of study to apply for the above scholarship
Two SAWISE scholarships are available:
Please note that these are ONLY for females and ONLY for 4th year [e.g. BSc (Honours) or equivalent] of study at tertiary level.

ELIGIBILITY:

Hope Network and SAWISE events.
