United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2022 for young Africans (Fully Funded)

United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa) has partnered with the Mastercard Foundation in its global Scholars Program. This initiative will offer academically talented youth from Africa facing financial, gender, displacement, or disability constraints an opportunity to access world class university education.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at USIU-Africa will provide full-cost scholarships to young Africans who are first-time undergraduate degree-seeking applicants. By completion of their studies, scholars will be required to lead changes in their communities and contribute to meaningful transformation across the continent, having been equipped with internationally recognized and locally applicable qualifications

Eligibility:

  1. Youth not exceeding 29 years old in the following categories qualify:
    • Young women
    • Young men
    • Refugees and displaced youth
    • Youth with disabilities
  2. Scholars must demonstrate the following qualities:
    • Academic talent: They must value learning and have a personal motivation to complete their education. Must meet the university admissions requirement as per the Kenya Commission for University Education or its equivalent.
    • Commitment to giving back: Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to improving their communities through previous and/or past engagements with community outreach activities.
    • Leadership potential: Scholars must show commitment to becoming change makers, role models, and mentors who embrace ethical leadership.
  3. Must be interested in, and meet USIU-Africa’s admissions criteria and academic qualifications to undertake, any of the approved 11 undergraduate degree programs for the Scholars Program at USIU-Africa as follows:
    • School of Science and Technology (SST) – Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information Systems and Technology;
    • School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (SPHS) – Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics;
    • School of Communication, Cinematic and Creative Arts (SCCCA) – Bachelor of Arts in Animation, Bachelor of Arts in Film Production and Directing;
    • Chandaria School of Business (CSOB) – Bachelor of Science in Finance, Bachelor of Science in International Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Accounting;
    • School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) – Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars at USIU-Africa will receive holistic support which includes:

  • Interested applicants can download the application forms from here or pick the forms from the Admissions Office, located in the Main Administration building at USIU-Africa at no cost.

  • August 7, 2020 – Deadline for the submission of applications.

  • August 19 -21, 2020 – Communication of the final decision to the selected Scholars.
  • August 23 – 29 – Pre-university orientation for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars at USIU-Africa.

Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program fall 2017 for for African Born Academics

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) is a scholar fellowship program for educational projects at African higher education institutions. Offered by IIE in collaboration with the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), the program is funded by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY). 

Over the past four years, the program has funded 274 Fellowships at 102 African universities. The program exemplifies CCNY’s enduring commitment to higher education in Africa. IIE manages and administers the program, including applications, project requests and fellowships. USIU-Africa provides strategic direction through the Advisory Council.

Requirements:

  • The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) is a fellowship program for African institutions in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda to host an African-born scholar to work in projects in research collaboration, graduate student teaching/mentoring and curriculum co-development.

Scholars

African-born academics currently living in the United States or Canada and working at institutions of higher education can submit a Scholar Application to the Scholar Roster. The scholar can work with a specific host institution on a Project Request or remain on the roster until a project that fits their expertise is submitted by an African host institution.

Benefits:

  • CADF provide a daily stipend, airfare and supplemental health insurance for the Fellow.

Type of Fellowships

Types of Fellowships Offered in Each Cycle

All-Discipline Fellowships

Open to Project Requests from all disciplines in each competition cycle.

Thematic Fellowships

The CADFP give preference to different thematic areas over three competition cycles. Though projects in thematic, priority areas will be given priority, many all-discipline fellowships will be awarded. Priority Fellowship Themes with corresponding application dates:

Fall 2017: October 1-December 8, 2017

  • Health sciences and well‐being
  • Climate change, resilience, and adaptation

Spring 2018: May 1-July 6, 2018

  • Science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM)
  • Sustainable cities and communities

Fall 2018: October 1-December 9, 2018

  • Peace, social justice, equality, and security (including cyber security)
  • Agriculture, industry, and innovation

Hosts

Accredited African universities in six host countries (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda) can submit a project request to host an African-born scholar currently living in the United States or Canada to work on projects in research collaboration, graduate student teaching/mentoring and curriculum co-development. The host institution can collaborate with a specific scholar on the project request or submit without naming a scholar. If the host submits without naming a scholar, IIE will search their Roster of qualified candidates to be matched to the request.

The Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) is a scholar fellowship program for educational projects at African higher education institutions. Offered by IIE in partnership with the United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa), the program is funded by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY). In the first two years of the program, the CADFP supported 110 short-term faculty fellowships for African-born academics.

In October 2015, additional funding was secured from CCNY to support up to 140 fellowships. The program exemplifies CCNY’s enduring commitment to higher education in Africa. IIE manages and administers the program, including applications, project requests and fellowships. USIU-Africa provides strategic direction through Dr. Paul Tiyambe Zeleza and an Advisory Council he chairs.

Requirements:

  • African-born academics currently living in the United States and Canada and working in higher education.
  • Fellows will engage in educational projects proposed and hosted by faculty of public or private higher education institutions in the following CCNY partner countries: Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.

For African Scholars:

  • Scholars must have been born in Africa, live in the United States or Canada and work in an accredited college or university in either of those two countries.
  • To be placed on a roster of available candidates, scholars also need to hold a terminal degree in their field and can hold any academic rank. University staff, research associates and postdocs are not eligible.
  • Scholars submit brief personal statements and information on their academic qualifications, disciplinary expertise and administrative experience.
  • A letter of reference from an administrator at the scholar’s current college or university with the position of dean or higher is required.
  • Candidates matched with a project receive a fellowship, to engage in an educational project at an African institution for one visit of between 14 and 90 days.

For African Host Institutions

Eligible types of project activities that can be requested by the African host institution are:

  • curriculum co-development,
  • research collaboration and
  • graduate student mentoring and training.

Fellowships

  • Fellowships of two weeks to one semester (14 to 90 days) in Africa are available for Diaspora scholars.
  • Fellowship funding to scholars includes a daily stipend, visa costs, limited health insurance coverage, international travel, domestic travel to and from the airport in Canada or United States.
  • The host institution is encouraged to fund housing, meals and local transportation to and from the airport in the host country.
