Are you ready to become an international UN Volunteer?You can contribute your time, skills and knowledge through volunteering with the UN. This is an opportunity to create a positive impact and be a significant force for achieving peace and development. Make a difference to the lives of many!

The first step to volunteer abroad with the UN is to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements (see below). If this is the case, register your profile in our Global Talent Pool. Profiles from the Talent Pool are then matched with assignments offered by UN partner agencies. Approximately 2,000 assignments become available per year. Most assignments are filled through the Global Talent Pool without being advertised. 

Requirements

The minimum requirements to serve as an international UN Volunteer are:

25 years old and older (no upper age limit); university degree or higher technical diploma;
At least two years of relevant work experience in a professional background; good working knowledge of English, Spanish or French;
Commitment to the values and principles of volunteerism; ability to work in a multicultural environment; willingness to work with people and local organizations;
Ability to adjust in difficult living conditions and sometimes remote locations;
strong interpersonal and organizational skills…

Condition:

International UN Volunteer assignments generally run for six to 12 months, with the possibility of extending for one to two years.Short-term assignments are also requested by our partners from time to time.

International UN Volunteers are entitled to certain allowances.Allowances are in no way to be understood as a compensation, reward or salary in exchange for the volunteer work.

The purpose of allowances for volunteers is to enable them to sustain a secure standard of living in their duty stations…

United Nations Volunteers Internship in Volunteer Knowledge and Innovation Section

Duration: Opportunities of between 3 and 6 months are available on an ongoing basis through 2014

The United Nations Volunteers programme (UNV) is the United Nations programme that
supports sustainable human development globally through the promotion of volunteerism and the mobilization of volunteers. It operates against a background of growing recognition that volunteerism brings benefits to both society at large and the individual volunteer; that it makes important contributions, economically as well as socially; and that it contributes to more cohesive societies by building trust and reciprocity among citizens.
Universal and inclusive, UNV embraces all types of volunteer action while holding to the values of free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity, which are the foundations of volunteerism.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
•Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree / programme in development, social science, political science, communications, knowledge management, evaluation or a related field.
( Please note that only candidates who will be returning to their studies upon the completion of their internship qualify for an internship with UNV. )
• Strong interest in development cooperation and in the work of the United Nations Volunteers programme.
• Previous experience in developing countries is desirable. Knowledge of the UN work environment an advantage.
• Experience in volunteering a strong asset.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills and demonstrated research abilities and interest
• Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. Experience with the development of statistics, charts in Excel and Web 2.0 tools (especially social networking) an asset.
• Fluency in English is required; Fluency in French, Arabic or Spanish an asset.

  • UNDP Conditions of Service for interns (http://www.undp.org/internships/) apply for interns working at UNV Headquarters.
  • The Internship Programme operates on a non-remunerative basis. Costs and arrangements for travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNV but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
  • UNV accepts no responsibility for the intern’s medical insurance or for costs arising from illness during the internship. Interns are required to provide proof of medical insurance coverage.
  • Only short-listed candidates will be contacted and called for a motivational interview that will take place on an ongoing basis.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the United Nations organization that

contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide.

UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for recognition of volunteers, working with partners to integrate volunteerism into development programming, and mobilizing an increasing number and diversity of volunteers,including experienced UNVolunteers, throughout the world.
UNV embraces volunteerism as universal and inclusive, and recognizes volunteerism in its diversity as well as the values that sustain it: free will, commitment, engagement and solidarity. UNV is headquartered in Bonn, Germany and has approximately 150 staff positions– the majority in Bonn with some positions in different UN peacekeeping missions, and other Headquarters locations (e.g. New York and Tokyo).

Internship

Eligibility

  • Education: Completed undergraduate degree (Bachelor) and current enrollment in a Masters degree or equivalent. Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible;
  • Field of study: Development-related fields such as economics, international relations, anthropology, sociology, public or business administration, or environmental studies. Other fields of study may be considered depending on the type of assignment;
  • Language skills: Written and spoken proficiency in English and preferably in an additional official UN Language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese);
  • Demonstrated interest in the field of development and the work of international organisations.

  • UNV accepts no responsibility for the medical insurance for the intern or for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness during the internship period. Applicants are required to provide evidence of adequate medical insurance coverage.
  • UNV is not responsible for any claims by an intern or third party in the case of loss or damage to property or death or personal injury as a result of actions or omissions on the part of the intern during the internship period.
