United Nations University (UNU-WIDER) PhD Internship Program 2017 for Doctoral Students (Fully Funded)

The UNU-WIDER PhD Internship Programme gives registered doctoral students an opportunity to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research, and to work with UNU-WIDER researchers in areas of mutual interest.

PhD interns typically spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER and are expected to return to their home institution afterwards. During their time in Helsinki, PhD interns prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. PhD interns may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series.

Selection criteria
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme and have shown ability to conduct research on developing economies.
  • Candidates working in other social sciences may apply but should keep in mind that UNU-WIDER is an economics-focused institute.
  • Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.
  • Applications from suitably qualified early-career, female, and developing country researchers are particularly encouraged.
  • The programme is especially addressed at researchers at later stages of their PhD.

The PhD Internship Programme is highly competitive and only a limited number of interns can be accepted. In recent years, one percent of all applications were successful

Financial assistance
  • UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant to cover the costs of travel to and from the location of your PhD granting institution, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services resulting from sickness and accident during your stay at UNU-WIDER), and a monthly stipend of EUR 1,600 to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the period of their internship.
  • The programme does not cover expenses related to dependents.
Application procedure
  • UNU-WIDER only receives online applications for the PhD Internship Programme twice each year.
  • Deadlines for submission of applications are 31 March and 30 September 23:59 EEST each year.
  • When applying in September, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER in the period February-June of the following year and when applying in March, you would be visiting UNU-WIDER in the period August-November of the same year.

Selected applicants will be informed by email of the final decision within four weeks of the closing deadline. The selected applicants must confirm their decision to take up UNU-WIDER’s offer two weeks after being contacted.

As part of your application, you will be asked to upload your curriculum vitae. Your PhD supervisor will need to provide UNU-WIDER with a letter of reference, which should be emailed (by your supervisor) to the following address: phdreference(at)wider.unu.edu. The reference letter will also be used to certify that you are enrolled in a PhD programme at your university.

2015/2016 JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme for study in Japan (All Expense Paid Fully Funded)

Jointly organized by the United Nations University and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is designed to provide promising, highly qualified, young researchers with the opportunity to conduct advanced research relevant to the main thematic focus areas of the UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS, Tokyo), in co-operation with host researchers at Japanese universities and research institutions. UNU acts as the nominating authority for the JSPS–UNU Programme.

This fellowship is aimed at candidates who have completed their PhD degrees in the past six years and also have professional and/or research experience. UNU will assist in securing acceptance from host researchers for short-listed candidates.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD degree (no ABDs) from a range of disciplines, most likely in the social sciences or humanities including but not limited to geography, public policy, political science, international relations or international law.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, proficiency in French and/or German is also useful.
  • Equally qualified candidates from developing countries as well as female candidates will receive preference.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan. Japanese nationals are not eligible.
  • Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (which must have been received on or after 2 April 2009), when the fellowship begins or be scheduled to receive a doctoral degree before the fellowship begins.
  • Applicants with at least 10 months research and/or professional experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Fellowship Worth:

  1. A round-trip air ticket (based on JSPS regulations)
  2. A monthly maintenance allowance of JPY362,000
  3. A settling-in allowance of JPY200,000, Overseas travel insurance coverage, etc.
  • The amounts of the Awards indicated above are subject to change by JSPS.
  • If the Fellow resides in Japan on or after the date his/her award letter is issued, the above-mentioned air ticket to Japan and settling-in allowance will not be provided.
  • A research grant, “Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research”, of up to JPY1,500,000 per year (total of JPY3,000,000 for two years – the amount varying depending on the areas/disciplines of research) is available to cover cooperative research-related expenses. Application for these grants is made by the host researcher through his/her institution.

Timeline:

  • The JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme begins on 1 October and the selected Fellows are required to be in Japan by this date. The deadline for applications is 15 June 2015.

2015 United Nations University(UNU)-GCM Visiting Researchers Programme, Barcelona Spain (Monthly Stipend of EUR 1,000)

The UNU Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM) Visiting Researchers Programme gives qualified individuals an opportunity to research topics related to the ongoing programme on Female Agency, Mobility and Socio-cultural Change, and to participate in other UNU-GCM activities. Visiting Researchers are expected to reside in Barcelona and work from the UNU-GCM office at the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site.

UNU-GCM is currently offering three (3) positions of three months each to postdoctoral researchers in the humanities and social sciences with expertise in the area of Female Agency, Mobility and Socio-cultural change.

Selection criteria

Applicants should have:

  • A PhD in either Migration Studies, Media Studies, Audiovisual and/or Communication Studies, Cultural Studies or in a field of the humanities or social sciences that considers questions of transnationalism, cultural dynamics, female agency, mobility and socio-cultural change;
  • A strong record of research productivity and publications;
  • The ability to work and publish in a UN working language. A good command of English and Spanish will be an advantage;
  • A keen interest to collaborate with the team at UNU-GCM; and
  • Willingness to reside in Barcelona for the duration of the residency

Responsibilities

Visiting Researchers are expected to:

  • Partake in activities, seminars, reading groups and other work of the Institute;
  • Carry out a research project to be agreed with the Director in the field of Female Agency, Mobility and Socio-cultural Change;
  • Produce an agreed output to be submitted for publication at the end of the three-month period in either a refereed journal or other agreed outlet;
  • Be available for consultation from other staff of the Institute for discussions  on our research programme: Female Agency, Mobility and Socio-cultural Change.
  • Be willing to present a paper based on their work at a conference organized for the research programmes or at a seminar;
  • Be a resident in Barcelona for a period of three consecutive months; and
  • Work at UNU-GCM and be based in the office for the full period of the residency. Normal working hours apply to Visiting Researchers.

Financial Assistance

  • UNU-GCM provides a monthly stipend of EUR 1,000 as a contribution towards accommodation, medical, and other out-of-pocket expenses. Payment will be made in installments.
  • The final payment of EUR 1,000 will be made upon proof of submission of the final research output, as agreed with the Director, to a refereed scholarly journal or other outlet.
  • Additionally, there will be financial support towards travel of up to EUR 500, if necessary. No funds will be available for research-related costs.

The United Nations University is now accepting applications for 2015 postdoctoral fellowship programmes: the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships and UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) Postdoctoral Fellowships.

The fellowship programmes provide young scientists, policymakers, and developing country scholars with the opportunity to expand their intellectual vision beyond a single field.

JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships (UNU-IAS or UNU Centre for Policy Research) are offered for a period of 24 months beginning in September 2015. UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships, which also start in September 2015, are offered for 12 months.

JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme 2015

Research proposals for JSPS–UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships should relate clearly to one of the research areas of UNU-IAS or UNU-CPR listed below, and also aim to be policy-relevant.

2015 Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship- (Masters Scholarship to study at the United Nations University)

The Master of Science in Sustainability programme equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to solving challenges of sustainability. Drawing on an innovative, interdisciplinary approach, the programme integrates methods and resources from the natural and social sciences, as well as the humanities.

The programme builds on UNU’s strong record in research and capacity development, as well as the extensive network of scholars and academic institutions participating in UNU research. The programme is practically oriented, user-focused, and of the highest academic quality. It is intended for recent graduates, professionals and practitioners interested in the unique opportunity to study at a global university and gain valuable skills, which will enable them as international professionals to meaningfully contribute to the work of governments, civil society, the private sector, and the UN and other international organizations.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants for the Master of Science in Sustainability are required to have met the following requirements by the application deadline in order to be considered:

  • A strong interest in sustainability studies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to study and understand global issues.
  • A completed bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university or institution of higher education in a field related to sustainability. Those who expect to graduate and have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent conferred before September 2015 may also apply.
  • A GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale on the bachelor’s degree earned.
  • English language proficiency. Please see the section below for more details.

English Language Requirements

The minimum score requirements for English language qualifications required by UNU-IAS are:

  • 600 in TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT)
  • 100 in TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (IBT)
  • 7.0 in IELTS – Academic format

Students are required to earn more than 30 credits for the master’s degree, and can take courses from UNU-IAS and partner universities in Japan. Students are also encouraged to take a joint diploma offered by the UNU-IAS and The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (UT-GSFS) on Sustainability. The diploma requires students to gain 34 credits, eight of which should be from a pool of courses designated by UNU-IAS and UT-GSFS under the joint diploma programme. A joint diploma can only be awarded to students who successfully complete the two-year master’s degree programme.

Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship

The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries* who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance, and they will be considered as candidates for the award of the scholarship.

*The developing countries listed in the latest OECD DAC list.

The JFUNU scholarship provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student. The tuition fees are fully waived for the scholarship recipients.

*150,000 JPY is the average monthly living cost for an international student without dependents in Tokyo, although this amount may vary depending on the lifestyle of the student.

2015 Junior Fellows Internship Programme at United Nations University, Tokyo Japan (Fully Funded)

The United Nations University Office of the Rector recruits highly qualified applicants to work as Junior Fellows at the UNU headquarters in Tokyo. Junior Fellows are recruited through a competitive application process twice per year for a period of four months. Graduate students interested in the work of the United Nations — and in particular, UNU — are encouraged to apply.

The underlying principles of the Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector are centred on creating a dynamic, challenging and rewarding experience for graduate level students and young professionals. Successful candidates will contribute to the work of the Office of the Rector, the United Nations University, and the UN system as a whole. The programme provides opportunities for the development of new skills and knowledge and is a unique and constructive setting for the practical application of capacities acquired through graduate studies.

The programme places a strong emphasis on the training, guidance, and hands-on experience that form the foundation of a successful and beneficial internship.

The programme opens with a one-week orientation designed to familiarize junior fellows with UNU, their co-workers, facilities and the working processes within the Office of the Rector. The knowledge and practical experience gained will also be beneficial to those candidates seeking a career in the United Nations. Junior fellows at the Office of the Rector can expect to gain valuable work experience while contributing in meaningful ways to UNU’s mission.

Criteria

The qualifications that are considered in each application process include, but are not limited to, the following. The candidate:

  • is currently pursuing or has recently completed postgraduate studies (master’s or doctoral), preferably in a field related to the University’s work;
  • is under 32 years of age at the time of application;
  • must not have more than 5 years of work experience in their related field;
  • has a native or near fluent command of written and spoken English;
  • has excellent research, writing and analytical skills;
  • can establish and maintain effective working relations with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in problem-solving;
  • has advanced computer skills: sound, hands-on, knowledge of standard office software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.); and
  • has a demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and more specifically, in the work of the United Nations University.

Benefits:

  • Junior Fellows are provided office space and facilities, as appropriate for their work, and are provided a monthly stipend in addition to a fixed transportation allowance for their commute to and from the UNU headquarters building.
  • Junior Fellows also enjoy free access to the headquarters’ library and gym and have the unique opportunity to learn about, contribute to and provide assistance in the organization of conferences, lectures and academic forums and symposiums that take place throughout the year.

Application Process

The application process is conducted in two stages. Instructions for each stage are detailed below. Any application that does not comply with the information provided on this page will not be considered.

Stage 1

The first stage of the application process is designed to measure the applicant’s motivation and background and assess how the applicant’s qualifications meet the criteria for selection. Stage 1 requires submission of the documents listed below (a-e).

Documents

a)  Application form — Download and complete the application form. The form may be completed using MS Word or printed and filled in by hand.

b)  Cover letter — Address your letter to the attention of the Office of the Rector Internship Committee. Your cover letter should not be longer than one single-sided page and should include the following:

i. your motivations for applying to the programme;
ii. how you feel you may contribute to the work being done at the Office of the Rector;
iii. how this programme relates to your future career goals.

c) Résumé or c.v. — Provide detailed descriptions of education history, work history, and leadership or extracurricular activities. Your résumé or c.v. may not exceed two single-sided pages.

d) Two letters of recommendation — Arrange for two letters of recommendation from referees who are familiar with your character and who have agreed to write a recommendation on your behalf. UNU reserves the right to contact your referees.

e) Funding plan — Download and complete the “Funding plan”, outlining the source, amount, and duration of actual and/or projected funding while in Tokyo.

The 2013 Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship- (Masters Scholarship to study at the United Nations University)

The Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarship is available for outstanding applicants from developing countries who can demonstrate a need for financial assistance, and they will be considered as candidates for the award of the scholarship.

The JFUNU scholarship covers the full tuition fees, and provides a monthly allowance of 150,000 JPY* for living expenses for a maximum of 24 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be covered by the student.

*150,000 JPY is the average monthly living cost for an international student without dependents in Tokyo, although this amount may vary depending on the lifestyle of the student.

Please note that the JFUNU scholarship is highly competitive and offered to a very small number of students who are granted admission to UNU-ISP. Thus, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for other funding opportunities from the government of their own country, private foundations, or international funding agencies.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the Master of Science in Sustainability, Development, and Peace are required to have met the following requirements by the application deadline in order to be considered:

1. A completed bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognised university or institution of higher education

Those who expect to graduate and have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent conferred before enrolment may also apply.

2. A particular interest and career aspiration in at least one of the following thematic areas:

  • Global Change and Sustainability
  • Peace and Security
  • International Cooperation and Development

3. English language proficiency

The minimum score requirements for English language qualifications required by UNU-ISP are:

  • 600 in TOEFL – Paper-Based Testing (PBT)
  • 100 in TOEFL – Internet-Based Testing (iBT)

Applicants, except for the cases below, must submit original TOEFL or IELTS score reports (from a test taken within the last two years) to Admissions Office at the time of application:

  1. Applicants whose first language is English.
  2. Applicants who graduated from a university or a postgraduate school located in an English speaking country.
  3. Applicants who completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme where the language of instruction and examination was English. In this case, an official statement from the academic institution will be required, confirming the use of English as the language of instruction and examination.

UNU-ISP requires original TOEFL/IELTS score reports (no photocopies accepted).

Fees and Financial Aid

Fees

  • Application Processing Fee: None
  • Tuition Fee: 10,000 USD per year

Estimated total expenses for the master’s degree programme for 2 years including tuition are 6,041,800 JPY or approximately 75,438 USD*. Applicants must show financial resources adequate to meet the full costs of educational and living expenses.

*Based on the UN operational rate of exchange in November 2012: 1 USD= 80.09 JPY.

Selection and Announcement of Results

After the application deadline, the process of reviewing applications and making admission decisions will take approximately 6-8 weeks. Please do not contact the Admissions Office until at least 8 weeks have elapsed to check on application status.

UNU-ISP may at any time require applicants to provide verification of the information and documents submitted as part of their application and/or additional information including, but not limited to, an interview.

  1. The successful applicants will be notified by email to the address provided on Application Form. Necessary documents for the admission procedure will be sent together with a letter of acceptance.
    Successful applicants must submit a medical certificate. Only successful applicants – except those accepted as JFUNU scholarship recipients – who submit the necessary documents for the entrance procedure and transfer 50% of the tuition fees for the first academic year (5,000 USD, non-refundable) within 10 UNU working days after result announcement will be admitted to the programme. (Please refer to UNU Holidays on Academic Calendar page) The matriculation date (early September 2013) cannot be extended, regardless of any special circumstances on the part of the student.
  2. The unsuccessful applicants will be notified by e-mail to the address provided on Application Form. Admissions Office does not provide individual feedback on unsuccessful applications.
