2016 Reham Al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme (All Expense paid to New York, $385/Day)

The Programme was mandated in December 1980 by UN General Assembly Resolution 35/201 (paragraph III-9) and renamed in September 2003 “Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalists Fellowship Programme” to honour Ms. Reham Al-Farra, a young UN staff member killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad.

The Programme is sponsored annually since 1981 by the United Nations Department of Public Information as a fellowship Programme for junior and mid-level broadcasters and journalists from developing countries and countries with economies in transition. As of 2015, 551 journalists and broadcasters from 168 countries have taken part in the Programme.

GOALS

The Programme provides journalists with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the work of the United Nations. It is also an opportunity to meet journalists from other countries and exchange ideas with UN communication professionals.
Upon completion of the Programme, participants are expected to continue working in journalism or broadcasting and help promote better understanding of the United Nations in their home country.
The Programme is not intended to provide basic skills training to broadcasters and journalists, as all participants are already working as media professionals. The Programme also does not lead to employment by the UN.

Requirements:

This year, the Fellowship is open to journalists and broadcasters from 35 countries, with the intention of selecting 15 candidates, each from a different country.
Eligible candidates not selected will be invited to participate in new social media discussion groups and receive selected training material electronically.
Qualified candidates from countries not selected in 2016 will be encouraged to apply again in 2017.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be nationals of one of the countries mentioned and must meet all the following requirements:

Age between 22 and 35.
Currently employed by a recognized media organization. Freelancers, translators and UN employees or immediate family members of UN employees are not eligible.
Oral and written fluency in English. Applicants from Non-English speaking countries will be interviewed on the phone.
Several years of professional journalism experience and proven interest in the work of the United Nations.

WORK PROGRAMME

Participants are expected to:

Familiarize themselves with the issues before the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly.
Shadow UN media professionals and participate in hands-on activities and workshops.
Participate in a two-day academic workshop at a university in New York.
Undertake professional work assignments. Each participant will be required to compile a dossier of news stories or scripts.
Attend briefings by officials of the UN Secretariat and special events.
Visit major media organizations and relevant NGOs in New York to observe their operations.

Benefits:

Economy single round trip airline ticket from your country to New York.
A daily subsistence allowance (DSA) to cover your accommodation, meals, local transportation and other expenses. The current daily rate for New York is US$ 385.00.
Upon completion of the Programme requirements and assignments, participants will receive a certificate of participation.

PARTICIPANTS RESPONSIBILITY AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Once selected, participants will need to undertake the following:

Obtain a Visitor Visa to the United States and acquire health insurance to cover possible medical expenses in the United States.
Provide a reference letter from his/her current employer, granting leave of absence for the full duration of the Programme. While in New York, participants are required to file relevant UN stories with their news organizations.
In preparation for the Programme, participants are required to research recent UN activities in their countries and familiarize themselves with the UN System through the UN website and other relevant sources of information.

APPLICATION PROCESS
1. Complete Application Form : outreach.un.org/raf

2. Submit three samples in any language published in the last three years of your work related to the United Nations (General politics – is not accepted). A translation into English or a summary must accompany material published in languages other than the six UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).

* For print journalists:
Copies of three articles or reports related to the United Nations, including full citation (dates, pages and names of the publications). Please scan and send the relevant article by email. Do not send complete newspapers or magazines.

* For broadcast and on-line journalists:
Three videos, audio or Internet links (e.g. YouTube) (maximum 15 minutes each) or links to radio/TV/on-line work related to the United Nations. Please indicate your exact responsibility and role in those samples. Samples must be journalistic in nature and demonstrate your role in news gathering, writing, editing or producing.

* Applicants in managerial or editorial positions for whom it would be difficult to send work samples should include a statement of up to 150 words describing their work and information about the publication/news organization.

3. Submit a photocopy of your passport, showing your photo, nationality, day/place issued and date of expiration. Your passport must be valid for at least another six months from the end of the Programme. Birth certificates or other forms or documentation cannot be accepted.

4. Provide a reference letter from your current employer, supporting your application and, if selected, granting you leave of absence for the full duration of the Programme, including allowing time to execute all assignments and requirements.

5. Submit a photocopy of your university/college diploma in the field of journalism or communication. A translation into English must accompany diplomas issued in languages other than the six UN official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish).

The second annual WFUNA International Model United Nations Conference (WIMUN) will take place November 10-14, 2015 at the United Nations Headquarters and the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. WIMUN is the premier international Model UN conference that simulates the UN4MUN Rules of Procedure produced by the United Nations Department of Public Information. Opening and Closing Plenary sessions and ceremonies will be held at the UN General Assembly Hall.

WIMUN is an accurate simulation of the United Nations, and one of the key aspects of a proper UN simulation should include the election of General Assembly officials. This is meant to convey the proper power structure in the UN where the member states determine their own officials and the UN Secretariat assists those officials. Collectively, the officials are called the General Committee for the General Assembly Plenary sessions and a Bureau for each of the Main Committees.

WIMUN will be holding online elections in the fall after registration has closed, and details about the elections process will be announced at a later date.
Permanent 5 member states customarily do not hold the President of the General Assembly or Chair roles at the UN and will therefore not be able to run for those roles as WIMUN.
Officials who are elected will cease to represent their member state in Committee and will therefore not be part of your assigned country delegation.
They will also receive training from the WIMUN Secretaries.

Delegate, Delegation, Advisor, Observer

Single Delegate (University):

Individual students enrolled or have graduated from university and are at least 18 years old by November 2015 can register as a Single Delegate.
The Early Registration delegate fee is $200 and the Regular Registration delegate fee is $250.

Delegation (University):

A group of at least four students enrolled or have graduated from university and are at least 18 years old by November 2015 can register as a University Delegation.
Delegations receive preference in country and committee assignments and can be grouped together in the same rooms.
The Early Registration delegate fee is $200 and the Regular Registration delegate fee is $250. The Early Delegation Fee is $100 and the Regular Delegation Fee is $150.

Delegation (High School):

A group of at least four students enrolled in high school and are at least 14 years old by November 2015 can register as a High School Delegation.
Delegations receive preference in country and committee assignments and can be grouped together in the same rooms.
The Early Registration delegate fee is $200 and the Regular Registration delegate fee is $250. The Early Delegation Fee is $100 and the Regular Delegation Fee is $150. High School Delegations must be accompanied by at least one registered Faculty Advisor

Faculty Advisor:

All faculty advisors for university or high school groups, chaperones, and observers must register under the Faculty Advisor option.
The fee for Faculty Advisors is $200 for both registration periods.

“Reham AlFarra Memorial Journalists’ Fellowship Programme” to honour Ms. Reham Al-Farra, a young UN staff member killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. The Programme is sponsored annually since 1981 by the United Nations Department of Public Information as a fellowship programme for junior and mid-level broadcasters and journalists from developing countries and countries with economies in transition. It is held at UN Headquarters in New York and since 2012, its last week continues in Geneva. As of 2012, 510 journalists and broadcasters from 165 countries have taken part in the Programme.

The Programme is not intended to provide basic skills training to broadcasters and journalists as

all participants are already working as media professionals. The Programme also does not lead to employment by the UN.

This year, the Fellowship is open to journalists and broadcasters from 20 countries with the intention of selecting 11 candidates, each one from a different country.

Eligible candidates not selected will be invited to participate in new social media discussion

groups and receive training materials electronically. Qualified candidates from countries not selected will be encouraged to apply again in 2014.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must be nationals of one of the following countries and must meet all the following requirements:

This year’s Programme will start on Tuesday, 3 September in New York and conclude on Friday,4 October 2013 in Geneva.

Participants are expected to:

• Familiarize themselves with the issues before the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly.

• Shadow UN media professionals and participate in hands on activities and workshops.

• Participate in a two-day academic workshop at a university in New York.

• Undertake professional work assignments. Each participant will be required to compile a dossier of news stories or scripts.

• Attend briefings by officials of the UN Secretariat, UN specialized agencies, programmes and funds as well as attend special events.

• Visit major media organizations and relevant NGOs in New York and in Geneva to observe their operations.

WHAT IS PROVIDED BY THE UN?

• Most direct economy single airline ticket from your country to New York, from New York to Geneva and from Geneva back to your country.

• A daily subsistence allowance (DSA) to cover your meals, local transportation and other expenses. The current daily rate for New York is US$ 378.00 and for Geneva is US$ 402.00

• A single-occupancy room for each participant in New York and double occupancy (same sex) room in Geneva. The accommodation cost is deducted from your DSA. In New York, participants may arrange their own accommodation and receive the full DSA. In Geneva, participants are required to spend the last week of the Programme in a hotel reserved by the Programme.

• Upon completion of the Programme requirements and assignments participants will receive a certificate of participation.

PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITY AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Once selected, participants will need to obtain visitor visas to the United States and to Switzerland. The travel to the embassies and the cost of the visas are the participants’ responsibility.

• Acquire a health insurance to cover possible medical expenses in United States and in Switzerland.

• Provide a reference letter from current employer, granting leave of absence for the full duration of the Programme and allowing time to execute all assignments and requirements.

• In preparation for the Programme, participants are required to prepare two short Power Point presentations (5-7 minutes each) on topics to be assigned by the Programme Coordinator.
