Many Languages One World® Student Essay Contest & 2017 Global Youth Forum (Fully Funded to USA)

ELS and the United Nations Academic Impact are pleased to sponsor the fourth Many Languages, One World^® Student Essay Contest and Global Youth Forum. This year welcomes Northeastern University as the host of the Many Languages, One World Global Youth Forum and the sponsor and organizer of the Northeastern University Global Youth Conference.

Sixty winners will be selected as delegates to the 2017 Many Languages, One World Global Youth Forum, where they will create action plans related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Requirements:

To qualify, essays must be written in an official language of the United Nations that is neither your first language (language(s) spoken at home) nor the medium of instruction in either your primary or secondary education (or a medium of instruction if attending a bilingual school).
You will need to demonstrate both written and verbal competency in the language of the essay.
You must be a full-time university student, referred and endorsed by a faculty member or university representative, and must be 18 years of age or older by the contest deadline.

Benefits:

ELS Educational Services, Inc. will award each winner with an all-expense paid trip to Boston and New York City between 15-26, July 2017.
At the Global Youth Forum, the students will create action plans addressing selected topics from the Sustainable Development Agenda, and will present their views at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
These international delegates will also have the opportunity to interact with invited international scholars and tour Boston and New York City.
Airfare, accommodations and meals will be provided by ELS Educational Services, Inc.

To Participate:
Write an original essay (2,000 words or less) discussing global citizenship and cultural understanding, and the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these. The essay should reflect your personal, academic, cultural and national context.

2015 UNHATE-UNAI International Diversity Contest (win 20,000 euros to translate the project into action!)

Are you a university/college student or a member of faculty? Are you between 18 and 30? Do you have an idea to promote the ideals of tolerance, respect for diversity and harmony within and between peoples?

Develop, prepare, and present a specific initiative at the local or community level and compete in the UNHATE-UNAI International Diversity Contest to have the chance to win 20,000 euros to translate the project into action!

The International Diversity Contest follows the UNHATE NEWS initiative which was launched by the United Nations Department of Public Information, in cooperation with the UNHATE Foundation, as part of its efforts to create a world without hate and where human rights are recognized. As a powerful and thought provoking digital initiative, its objective was to invite people to create news “stories” they would like to see come true, stories whose inherent ideas provoke thought and actions.

The project should be clearly related to the community in which the Entrant(s) reside and aimed at promoting the global goals of the Contest among the members of the said community.

The project should have practical relevance and its impact must be clearly measurable. In submitting a proposal, entrants are advised to include definable measurements with various stages of implementation,clearly identifiable by time period. Specifically, entrants are advised to take into account the following elements:

a. Who is the target audience of the project?
b. What is the time-frame for its implementation?
c. How will this improve diversity and tolerance?
d. What is the estimated cost?
e. Does it require the participation of other partners (for example, university administration)? If so, how will their participation be ensured?
f. Can this be replicated elsewhere?

Entries should be accompanied by two attachments:

(i) An institutional representative will have to attest that the Entrant is either currently enrolled as a student or a faculty member of the institution, and that the project proposal is the original, unaided work of the Entrant.
(ii) Proof of age (between 18 and 30 as on May 31,2015.)

Award:

All Finalists will be given certificates of participation by the UNHATE Foundation, signifying they are one of the ten winners of the International Diversity Contest arranged in cooperation with the United Nations Academic Impact.

Submission Requirements

The proposal must clearly spell out the financial requirements for the implementation of the project. All Entrants are advised to include suggestions on future resource mobilization to support the project beyond the initial period for which grants will be available from the UNHATE Foundation.

Proposals submitted for consideration should not be longer than 1,000 words. However, supplemental material, containing detailed analysis with suggested time-frames and financial analysis, are welcome. All project proposals – and supplemental material – must be submitted in English.

The United Nations Academic Impact and ELS Educational Services are organizing an international essay-writing contest for college and university students on the role of multilingualism in a globalized world. A requirement for all participants is that their essay be in an official United Nations language which is not their mother tongue or medium of educational instruction.

Under the overall theme of “Many languages — One world”, students are being asked to write an essay in which they are to discuss and debate the value of multilingualism in the broader context of global citizenship — one of the core principles of the United Nations Academic Impact.

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), in collaboration with ELS Educational Services, Inc., (ELS) invites students, 18 years and older, who are enrolled in a course of study at a college or university, to participate in an essay contest on the theme “Many Languages, One World.”

The essay should relate to ideas of global citizenship and understanding and to the role that linguistic abilities and felicity can play in fostering these. Entries, of up to 2000 words in length should be in an official language of the United Nations that is not the mother tongue of the entrant or the principal medium of instruction in his or her education. The official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Eligibility

The contest is open to students 18 years and older enrolled in a college or university anywhere in the world. Each submission must be accompanied by a certification from a competent institutional authority attesting that the conditions of the contest have been met and that the entry is the original, unaided work of the participant. Only one submission per student will be accepted.

Requirements

The essays will have to be written in one of the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish), but can not be the student’s mother tongue and/or principal medium of instruction.
Essays must be under 2000 words, excluding citations and bibliography, if any.
Essays must present, in a clear and concise form, arguments for — or against — the importance of multilingualism. In today’s globalized world, there is growing emphasis on learning multiple languages. The United Nations, as the world’s premier universal organization, promotes the use of six official languages, and issues all official documents simultaneously in these. Students should examine why the emphasis on linguistic diversity contributes — or does not — to creating a more harmonious world.
Students are encouraged to research the topic using web and non-web materials. When quoting directly, original sources must be cited.

Application Procedure:

Entries should be uploaded to the website ManyLanguagesOneWorld.ELS.edu by 21 February 2014.
An institutional representative will have to attest that the entrant is a student of the institution, in good standing, and that the essay is written in a language that is not the institution’s primary language of instruction and is the original, unaided work of the entrant.

Judging

A panel of judges will decide upon a total of sixty student winners of the competition—ten in each of the six languages.

Prize

The winners will be invited to New York in 2014 to participate in a series of events between June 25 and June 29, 2014.
These events will include a youth forum on the 10 principles of the United Nations Academic Impact, multilingualism and global citizenship at United Nations Headquarters, preceded by a preparatory students’ conference at Adelphi University on Long Island, New York. Programmes of touristic sightseeing and recreation will also be arranged by ELS Educational Services.
ELS will pay for roundtrip economy class fares in carriers of its choosing between the entrants’ home city and New York, and be responsible for the entrants’ travel, room and meals from their arrival on June 25th until their departure on June 29th, 2014.
Entrants are responsible for all documentation relating to their journey, including passports and visas and the costs related to these, as well as appropriate medical insurance for their journey and stay in the United States.
All winners will be given certificates of participation by ELS, signifying they have won the Student Essay Contest arranged in cooperation with the United Nations Academic Impact.
