UNFCCC Climate Champions Youth Fellowship 2024 for Young Professionals (Paid Fellowship)

Applications are now open for the 2024 UNFCCC Climate Champions Youth Fellowship. The Climate Champions Team is now looking for its fourth cohort of ambitious and stubbornly optimistic Youth Fellows. The programme creates a pathway for young professionals to work within the team supporting the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions for  COP28 and COP29 – H.E Razan Al Mubarak and Ms. Nigar Arpadarai – to drive real world momentum into the UN Climate Change negotiations.

As part of the Youth Fellowship programme, you will help mobilise climate action amongst non-State actors to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement, in close collaboration with the UNFCCC, the Marrakech Partnership and the COP Presidencies.

Fellows will join the Climate Champions Team for a seven month fellowship, focused on:

  • The core Campaigns: Race To Zero and Race To Resilience
  • Systems Transformation: critical sectoral work in Finance, tracking signals of change 
  • Stakeholder and Policy Engagement
  • Strategic Communications

The fellowship will include modules on personal leadership development, mentoring, engagement with stakeholders, systems mapping and horizon planning, mobilisation and outreach in broader networks including working closely with local, regional and global youth organisations to ensure knowledge sharing and solutions exchange. There will also be an opportunity for the fellows to work together as a collective to explore projects and outreach. 

Are you an early- or mid-career professional, aged over 18, but aged 30 or under 30 as of 1st January 2024? Do you have a record of engagement or expertise in the thematic areas hosting the fellowship, and a history of climate or sustainability advocacy? Are you familiar with multi-stakeholder organising? If so, we strongly encourage you to apply!

Eligibility criteria

  • 30 or under 30 years of age as on 1 January 2024 (minimum age to apply is 18 years)
  • Minimum five years of full-time work or volunteering experience, either in one of the fellowship sectors, climate leadership or organising
  • Ability to commit minimum 16 hours a week to the fellowship
  • Strong communication skills
  • Self-motivated and willingness to be flexible (you will be working with teams across different time zones)
  • Adequate network relevant to sector-specific or climate-related work
  • Proficient English language skills
  • Your own laptop and reliable internet connectivity
  • A commitment to the values of the Climate Champions Team to raise non-State actor commitments to the global goals of the Paris Agreement

Fellowship Benefits

  • This is a paid fellowship programme

Time commitment: 

  • The selected fellows will work closely with the respective sector leads during this fellowship and will be required to commit 16 hours per week.

Duration: 

  • The fellowship will run for seven months from June to December 2024

The Climate Champions Team, in support of the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, are committed to strengthening youth agency in climate action. Elevating and empowering  youth voices will help drive systemic change and the Climate Champions are committed to continuing to integrate this vital stakeholder group  into the heart of our work.

  • Systems Transformation: critical sectoral work in Energy, Finance, Ocean, Systems Tracking, and;
  • Stakeholder and Policy Engagement.

  • Ability to commit minimum 16 hours a week to the fellowship

  • UNFCCC is looking for early career professionals, 30 years of age or under (in 2023), with a record of engagement, expertise in one of the sectors outlined below and ideally a history of climate/sustainability advocacy, familiarity with coalition-based and multi-stakeholder organising.

Time commitment: Each fellow is required to commit upto 16 hours per week. Work will be done remotely and online.

UNFCCC Climate Champions Youth Fellowship 2022 for early career Professional (Paid Fellowship)

The Climate Champions Youth Fellowship 2022 led by the UN High Level Climate Champions team – will provide a platform for young people to work with the Champions and to contribute to our work on driving ambitious climate action.

Fellows will join the UN High Level Climate Champions Team for a nine-month fellowship focused on a few critical sectors – energy, finance, food and agriculture, oceans, communications, transport and climate resilience

In 2021, the Climate Champions team launched a pilot global Youth Fellowship programme by appointing five young professionals to contribute to a series of strategic non state actor engagements in the build-up to COP26 in Glasgow to help inspire non state action in the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience.

To help us deliver on our plan for COP27 and beyond, we are excited to announce Year 2 of the Youth Fellowship.

This fellowship — led by the High Level Climate Champions team — will provide a platform for young people to work with the Champions and to contribute to UNFCCC work on driving ambitious climate action. Fellows will join the High Level Climate Champions Team for a nine month fellowship in the following sectors — energy, finance, food and agriculture, oceans, communications, transport and climate resilience.

The fellowship will include modules on leadership development, engagement with business, NGO and/or policy leaders, mobilisation and outreach in broader networks, opportunity for the fellows to work together as a collective and a personal capstone project. This is a paid fellowship programme.

If you’re an early career professional, under 30, with a record of engagement or expertise in one or two of the sectors hosting the fellowship or a history of climate/sustainability advocacy and familiarity with multi-stakeholder organising, we highly encourage you to apply.

Eligibility criteria

  • Under the age of 30 as on April 1 2022
  • Minimum five years of work experience, either in one of the fellowship sectors,  climate leadership or organising
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated and willingness to be flexible (you will be working with teams across different time zones)
  • Adequate network relevant to sector-specific or climate related work
  • Ability to commit minimum 16 hours a week to the fellowship
  • Sufficient English language skills
  • Laptop and reliable internet connectivity
  • A commitment to the values of the Climate Champions to raise non state actor commitments to the global goals of the Paris Agreement.

Time commitment 

The selected fellows will work closely with the respective sector leads during this fellowship and will be required to commit up to 16 hours per week

The fellowship will run for nine months from April to December 2022
