As an integral part of the extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, and in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the Ministry of Culture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the National Committee for Education, Culture and Science and the Saudi Heritage Commission will be hosting the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2023 under the theme of “Looking Ahead: The Next 50 Years of Protecting Natural and Cultural Heritage” from 3 to 12 September 2023 in Riyadh and the Al-Ahsa Oasis. The Forum will be developed and implemented with the support of the NGO Diadrasis.

The Forum is an opportunity to understand and assess the achievements of the past 5 decades of the World Heritage Convention; to highlight the crucial role of youth in the heritage ecosystem; and to pave the way for the next generation of heritage professionals, giving voice to their unique approaches to heritage management. The Forum will harness the potential of capacity building and prepare the young professionals in creating a sustainable future for our cultural and natural heritage. At the end of the Forum, the outcomes produced by the participants will be presented to the extended 45^th session of the World Heritage Committee in the form of a Youth Declaration.

Background

The World Heritage Young Professionals Fora are among the flagship activities of the World Heritage Education Programme, designed to foster intercultural learning and exchange by bringing together young people, educators, and heritage experts from different parts of the world to discover new roles for themselves in heritage conservation. They allow the young professionals to gain local insights on heritage management from the experience of the host country and through site visits to World Heritage properties, and also provide an opportunity for them to meet with the members of the World Heritage Committee and its Advisory Bodies and discuss the 1972 Convention and its implementation in greater depth.

Theme: “Looking Ahead: The Next 50 Years of Protecting Natural and Cultural Heritage”

Eligibility Requirements

Participants of the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2023 are expected to be:

Aged between 23 and 32 years.
Experienced in one of these fields: World Heritage, conservation, archaeology, architecture, conservation, urban planning & regeneration, restoration, art history, tourism, climate change, and digital technology.
Motivated and committed to implementing the outcomes of the Forum in their respective countries.
Committed to enhancing community engagement in the management of World Heritage properties.
Available for the entire duration of the Forum.
Proficient in English, as the Forum will be conducted entirely in English.

In addition to general eligibility, the following elements will also be considered in selecting the participants:

Balanced geographical representation.
Gender equality.
Diversity of professional backgrounds.
Ability to disseminate gained experience in the country or institution of origin.
Knowledge and experience in the management practices for World Heritage sites.

Benefits

The participants are expected to arrive on 2^nd September 2023 and depart on 13^th September 2023. All related expenses (economy class flights, accommodation, local transportation, and meals) will be covered by the host country for the duration of the Forum. The organizers will also assist in the travel preparations and will provide support to the participants who need a visa.
If any participant wishes to extend his/her stay after 13^th September 2023, all related costs will be covered by the participant. In such a case, the host country should be informed in advance, in order to make all the necessary arrangements.

Prior to the 41^st session of the World Heritage Committee and in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the International Cultural Centre in Krakow are proud to hold the Heritage Youth Forum 2017 “Memory: Lost and Recovered Heritage” from the 25 June to 4 July 2017, in Warsaw, Krakow (Poland).

Young representatives, aged from 22 to 32, from 35 countries, will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, contribute to the discussions and immerse themselves in topics within the scope of lost and recovered heritage.

Objectives

The Forum seeks to deepen youth knowledge and understanding the importance of:

the implementation of the World Heritage Convention,
the working methods of the World Heritage Committee,
the challenges and opportunities of the protection, conservation and restoration of selected World Heritage sites carrying associative values.

Programme details

Scheduled activities include:

visits to World Heritage sites including Wieliczka, Warsaw and Krakow with international heritage experts;
workshops on different aspects emerging from the sites;
practical hands-on activities revolving around the restoration of the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow;
experts and young representatives’ presentations;
participation in discussions on the state of conservation and restoration of properties and practicing the Youth Model simulation.
Elaboration of a declaration which the participants will present to the Committee at the Opening Ceremony of the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee and participation in the first plenary day, 3 July 2017.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the International Cultural Centre in Krakow are pleased to invite young people interested in issues related to World Heritage who are:

Aged from 22 to 32 years old;
Fluent in English (please note that no interpretation will be provided; English will be the only language used throughout the Forum);
Citizens of one of the 21 Member States of the current World Heritage Committee (Angola, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Croatia, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Republic of Tanzania, Vietnam, Zimbabwe), as well as of Belarus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Lithuania, Mali, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Syria, and Ukraine;
Graduates from / involved in heritage-related fields such as: architecture, urban planning, constructional engineering, archaeology, sociology, cultural heritage, anthropology, ethnology, ethnography, economy, history, art history, communication, law, tourism, natural and cultural heritage, geography, international relations; researchers, activists, young professionals in NGOs, associations, cultural and natural heritage organizations, museums, heritage sites;
Experience in the field of heritage, in particular in the area of heritage conservation and restoration, would be an asset;
Motivated, committed to bring in their own expertise, active individuals interested in implementing the outcomes of the Forum in their respective countries.

Benefits:

The organisers will be responsible for flight arrangements and will cover the
participants’ transportation (economy class) as well as accommodation* costs
(non-smoking rooms) during their stay in Poland (including visa fees, where
applicable).
The attendance and active participation for the full duration of the event
(arrival on 25 June, departure on 4 July 2017) is mandatory.
Participants should
be committed to invest their time to prepare and offer a follow up activity to
the Forum.
Each participant is required to make a 10-minute-long presentation
of a case of tangible heritage reconstruction or rehabilitation in their respective
country (in line with the theme of the Forum).
