World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2018 ‘Protecting Heritage in an Ever-Changing World’ : As an integral part of the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee, and in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities will host the World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2018 under the theme of ‘Protecting Heritage in an Ever-Changing World’ from 17 to 26 June 2018 in Manama (Bahrain).

The Forum aims to transmit the values of World Heritage, highlighting the potential that World Heritage education may have for facilitating sustainable development. It is addressed to young professionals who will be invited to reflect upon the complexity of preserving heritage in a constantly evolving world with the help of international experts.

OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Having Bahrain and the urban property components of the World Heritage Site of Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy, as the case study, the participants will be invited to reflect upon the complexity of preserving heritage in a constantly evolving world with the help of local and foreign experts, progressively adding elements of reflexion, day by day.

CONTENTS
The different topics which will be presented and considered during the Forum are:

  • History, local and global, and how heritage is affected
  • People, native, migrants of a few generations back, foreigners, and the influence on each other
  • Land, deeply altered by human actions
  • Materials, adapting, evolving, transforming, disappearing, addition of new ones
  • The near future, threats and opportunities
  • Difficulties and prospects of the changes in heritage protection in our days
  • Awareness about heritage protection and interaction with the local community
  • The World Heritage Convention towards its 50th anniversary
  • Simulation of the World Heritage Committee
  • Declaration of World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2018

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Participants of the Youth Forum will come from different heritage fields and countries and must be specifically interested in World Heritage.
  • Thirty participants will be selected to take part in this year’s forum taking into account gender equality and regional representation.
  • Applications can be sent through the UNESCO National Commissions or other respective governmental institutions, or directly from the applicants to the organizer.
    EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
    Applicants should be recent young professionals between the ages of 23 to 30 with at least one year experience in the field of either Cultural or Natural heritage. We accept a wide range of backgrounds including but not limited to archaeology, architecture, conservation, urban planning & regeneration, restoration, art history, lawyers, heritage managers.
    LANGUAGE
    The working language of the Forum is English. A good knowledge of English is essential, for the benefit of the individual participants and the development of the forum.
    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
    Basic computer skills will be required to collaborate to draft the final declaration and a small exhibition about the Forum itself.
    Handwork and visits requires a good physical condition due to the climate of the region.

Benefits:

  • All travel and accommodation costs for the selected participants will be covered by the Kingdom of Bahrain- for the duration of the forum.
  • The organizers will assist in the travel preparations (including visas) and bookings.

UNESCO World Heritage Young Professionals Forum 2017 (Fully Funded to Warsaw, Krakow Poland).

Prior to the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee and in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the International Cultural Centre in Krakow are proud to hold the Heritage Youth Forum 2017 “Memory: Lost and Recovered Heritage” from the 25 June to 4 July 2017, in Warsaw, Krakow (Poland).

Young representatives, aged from 22 to 32, from 35 countries, will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, contribute to the discussions and immerse themselves in topics within the scope of lost and recovered heritage.

Objectives

 The Forum seeks to deepen youth knowledge and understanding the importance of:

  • the implementation of the World Heritage Convention,
  • the working methods of the World Heritage Committee,
  • the challenges and opportunities of the protection, conservation and restoration of selected World Heritage sites carrying associative values.

Programme details

Scheduled activities include:

  • visits to World Heritage sites including Wieliczka, Warsaw and Krakow with international heritage experts;
  • workshops on different aspects emerging from the sites;
  • practical hands-on activities revolving around the restoration of the Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow;
  • experts and young representatives’ presentations;
  • participation in discussions on the state of conservation and restoration of properties and practicing the Youth Model simulation.
  • Elaboration of a declaration which the participants will present to the Committee at the Opening Ceremony of the 41st session of the World Heritage Committee and participation in the first plenary day, 3 July 2017.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the International Cultural Centre in Krakow are pleased to invite young people interested in issues related to World Heritage who are:

  • Aged from 22 to 32 years old;
  • Fluent in English (please note that no interpretation will be provided; English will be the only language used throughout the Forum);
  • Citizens of one of the 21 Member States of the current World Heritage Committee (Angola, Azerbaijan, Burkina Faso, Croatia, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Republic of Tanzania, Vietnam, Zimbabwe), as well as of Belarus, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Iraq, Lithuania, Mali, Russian Federation, Slovakia, Syria, and Ukraine;
  • Graduates from / involved in heritage-related fields such as: architecture, urban planning, constructional engineering, archaeology, sociology, cultural heritage, anthropology, ethnology, ethnography, economy, history, art history, communication, law, tourism, natural and cultural heritage, geography, international relations; researchers, activists, young professionals in NGOs, associations, cultural and natural heritage organizations, museums, heritage sites;
  • Experience in the field of heritage, in particular in the area of heritage conservation and restoration, would be an asset;
  • Motivated, committed to bring in their own expertise, active individuals interested in implementing the outcomes of the Forum in their respective countries.

Benefits:

  • The organisers will be responsible for flight arrangements and will cover the
    participants’ transportation (economy class) as well as accommodation* costs
    (non-smoking rooms) during their stay in Poland (including visa fees, where
    applicable).
  • The attendance and active participation for the full duration of the event
    (arrival on 25 June, departure on 4 July 2017) is mandatory.
  • Participants should
    be committed to invest their time to prepare and offer a follow up activity to
    the Forum.
  • Each participant is required to make a 10-minute-long presentation
    of a case of tangible heritage reconstruction or rehabilitation in their respective
    country (in line with the theme of the Forum).

UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers Initiative 2017 Program : Call for Projects.

The World Heritage Volunteers Initiative is led by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre (WHC) in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, in collaboration with the Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVS), European Heritage Volunteers (as a branch of Open Houses) and Better World.

The World Heritage Volunteers 2017 campaign shall aim to:
1) Raise awareness among young people, volunteers, local communities, and concerned authorities of the need to protect and promote World Heritage;
2) Involve young people in World Heritage preservation through concrete projects at sites;
3) Empower young people allowing them to learn skills, basic preservation and conservation techniques and raise their capacity as future decision-makers and global active citizens;
4) Strengthen sustainable cooperation between non-profit organisations, site management, communities and authorities;
5) Identify best practices and develop non-formal education tools to facilitate stakeholders’ participation in the World Heritage education;
6) Mainstream gender equality in all stages of the projects and geographical diversity among the World Heritage properties where the action camps take place.

Selection Criteria:

For selection, proposed projects must fulfil the set of criteria below (mandatory):
The project:
• Should be organised in immediate connection to a property inscribed on the World Heritage List or a site inscribed on a Tentative List
[Reference: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list; http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists ];
• Should have a minimum 10 day duration (excluding arrival and departure dates);
• Should include the same group of people for a minimum 10 day duration, consecutive or not;
• Should start after the 15 May 2017 and end by the 30 October 2017;
• Should involve as much as possible international volunteers;
• Should include awareness activities, practical hands-on activities and skills related to World Heritage sites where the action camp will be conducted (detailed definitions of hands-on activities and skills in Annex below);
• Should be developed in consultation with site managers and local authorities in planning details of the activities;
• Should include practical hands-on skills training activities as well as reflection on issues related to World Heritage;
• Should involve the community in order to deepen their knowledge around issues related to World Heritage and the World Heritage Volunteers Initiative;
• Should respect participants’ gender equality (ideally equal number of male and female) and geographical diversity (ideally from different countries and regions).

Applying organisation:
• Should be legally registered as a public or private organisation or institution in the country where the project takes place;
• All activities of the organisation related to WHV should be no profit. All local, national and
international partnerships developed by the applicant in the framework of the WHV should be submitted for approval to the WHV coordinators;
• First time applicants should submit two letters of support from recognised organisations and/or institutions recommending the applicant on the basis of past or current proven cooperation;
• First time applicants should submit a copy of their Constitution / Bylaws and of their most recent activity report in one of the UN official languages

Timeline:

  • 30 November 2016 Deadline for submission of project applications
  • 30 November 2016 – 1 February 2016 Additional information can be asked to the organisations by the World Heritage Centre, the CCIVS, European Heritage Volunteers, and Better World
  • 1 February 2017 Announcement of selected World Heritage Volunteers projects
    A confirmation email will be sent by the regional coordination to the selected organisations
  • End of February 2017 The confirmation letters will be sent by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre to the selected organisations
  • End of March 2017 The information letters will be sent to the World Heritage site
    managers, the UNESCO Field Offices, National Commissions, and Permanent Delegations to UNESCO Up to 2 months Submission of evaluation forms from the organisations to the regional coordinations, attached with pictures and videos of the project and signed copyright agreement

As part of the 40th session of the World Heritage Committee and in the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO and the Istanbul Site Management Directorate are organizing the World Heritage Youth Forum 2016: “At the Crossroads of Multi-Layered Heritage” from 29 June to 12 July 2016.

Young representatives, aged from 22 to 28, from 35 countries, will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, contribute to the discussions and immerse themselves in topics within the scope of multi-layered heritage.

The Forum seeks to  deepen youth knowledge and understanding the importance of:

  • the implementation of the World Heritage Convention,
  • the working methods of the World Heritage Committee,
  • the challenges and opportunities of the protection of multi-layered World Heritage sites.

Eligibility Requirements

The Turkish National Commission for UNESCO and the Istanbul Site Management Directorate are pleased to invite young people interested in topics related to World Heritage who are:

  • Aged from 22 to 28
  • Fluent in English (Please note: No interpretation will be provided. The programme will take place in English only)

Requirements

  • Young people from all over the world, aged between 22 and 28 years old, who are interested in heritage will be provided the opportunity to exchange ideas, broaden their outlook and contribute to the discussions and immerse themselves in topics such as urban life and its culture, natural landscape, importance and protection of constructions and the silhouette of the city within the scope of multi-layered heritage.

Scheduled activities include:

  •  visits to World Heritage sites, including Bursa and Cumalıkızık, with the international heritage experts,
  • workshops on different aspects emerging from the multi-layered sites,
  • practical hands-on activities with timber and stone work for the protection and the maintenance of the World Heritage sites in Istanbul,
  • experts and young delegates presentations,
  • participation in the discussions on the state of conservation of properties,
  • practicing the Youth Model simulation with the scenario on the evaluation of Iznik’s nomination for the World Heritage List which is a multi-layered settlement inscribed on the Tentative List of Turkey,
  • drawing up the final document of the Forum for presentation during the Opening Ceremony of the 40th World Heritage Committee,
  • attendance to the first session of the 40th World Heritage Committee.

The young representatives will prepare the final document of the Forum to be presented during the Opening Ceremony of the 40th World Heritage Committee Session. They will also participate in the first plenary day of the World Heritage Committee to observe how the Committee works.

In order to provide an occasion for the young representatives to exchange ideas with the delegates we ensure the participation of the young representatives on the first plenary day, 11 July 2016.

CONDITIONS

  • The attendance during the full length of the event (arrival 29 June, departure 12 July 2016) is mandatory.
  • Young representatives should be committed to invest time to prepare and follow up the Forum.
  • Each representative is invited to make a 5-minute presentation on a (multi-layered) World Heritage Site in the participants’ countries.
  • The organizers will make all of the flight arrangements and cover the travel costs (economy class) as well as accommodation during the stay in Turkey (including visa fees, where applicable) for all participants.
  • In case of participant’s attendance, beyond 11 July 2016, to the World Heritage Committee Session, all the related costs should be covered by the concerned Member

Selection:

  • Successful applicants will be informed by 15 April 2016 at the latest.
  • From each country mentioned above, only one candidate can be accepted.
  • The candidates are expected to be aware of the World Heritage concept. The selection will be based on the fulfilment of the required profile and will take into consideration the diversity and complementarity of experiences among participants as well as gender balance.

Call for Projects: UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE VOLUNTEERS Programme 2016

UNESCO have the pleasure to launch the World Heritage Volunteers 2016 (WHV 2016) campaign and welcome the participation of all interested organisations and institutions.

In the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme, the World Heritage Volunteers Initiative is led by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre (WHC) in collaboration with the Co-ordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service (CCIVS), European Heritage Volunteers (as a branch of Open Houses) and Better World.

Considering the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity (2011-2020), the World Heritage Volunteers 2016 campaign shall aim to:
a) Raise awareness of local and international volunteers as well as the local communities about issues related to cultural and/or natural World Heritage, sustainable development and biodiversity;
b) Integrate hands-on skills training activities on basic preventive conservation and preservation techniques in World Heritage Volunteers 2016 projects;
c) Link-up with local youth organisations, the local communities, the site management, national and local authorities and establish cooperative relations and partnership to improve project towards sustainable results;
d) Share best practices for the development

Share best practices for the development of non-formal education tools by documenting new approaches to promote World Heritage.

SELECTION CRITERIA
For selection, proposed projects must fulfil the set of criteria below.
1. The project should be organized in immediate connection to a site inscribed on the World Heritage List or a proposed site on the country’s Tentative List [Reference: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list ; http://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists ];
2. The project should:
a. Be developed in consultation with site managers and local authorities in planning details of the activities;
b. Include awareness activities, practical hands-on activities and skills related to World Heritage sites where the action camp will be conducted (detailed definitions of hands-on activities and skills in Annex);
c. Involve the community in order to deepen their knowledge around issues related to World Heritage and the World Heritage Volunteers Campaign;
d. Involve as much as possible international volunteers;
e. Have a minimum of 10 full days of activities, consecutive or not, by the same group of participants (excluding arrival and departure);
The World Heritage Volunteers projects are opened to volunteers above 18 years old.
3. The project is linked to the United Nations Decade of Biodiversity;
4. Organizers commit themselves to implement their project as per approved proposals and to submit a full activity report (including images, videos and other results of the projects submitted by the organisations) demonstrating the concrete engagement of young volunteers in the field of World Heritage.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Projects organised between June and October have higher chances of receiving international volunteers.
  • A group size of minimum 10 volunteers provides a richer working and learning environment for the participants and stimulates more diverse interpersonal and intercultural dynamics.
  • Participants’ gender (ideally equal number of male and female) and geographical (ideally from different countries and regions) balance facilitate the exchanges within the group.
  • Organisations are highly recommended to join the World Heritage Volunteers Meetings that will be organised by the coordination of the campaign
  • If your action camp was already part of the campaign in the past, your organization should be able to explain what the objectives were for the previous project(s), how they have evolved and which of them you plan to achieve this year.

  • October/November 2016 : Evaluation meeting Representing a young guardian, the Patrimonito logo* symbolises the interdependence of culture and nature. Created on the basis of the World Heritage emblem, the central square is a form created by people (culture) and the circle represents nature, the two being intimately linked. The emblem is round like the world, but at the same time, it is a symbol of protection.
