UNESCO has just opened its call for applications for the prestigious UNESCO International Literacy Prizes. All champions in the field of literacy learning are encouraged to apply and nominating entities to be ready to engage and nominate their favourite candidates from around the world. Like every year, UNESCO will reward six individuals or organizations for their outstanding projects that promote literacy learning and for this year’s edition are requested to reflect around the theme ‘Transforming literacy learning spaces’.

The theme aims to present the different existing learning spaces (work, school, family, learning centers) and highlight the relation and various interconnections among them.

Since 1967, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes have rewarded excellence and innovation in the field of literacy. Over 506 projects and programmes around the world have already received recognition and support for their excellent work.

Requirements

• The application is open to all governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals who, through projects and programmes, contribute to the promotion and advancement of literacy learning.  
• All applications should be submitted to the nominating entities, the National Commission for UNESCO in the country of the programme, or an NGO that is in an official partnership with UNESCO, who are encouraged to communicate the nominated individuals, institutions and organizations to UNESCO.
• The nominations will be assessed by an independent International Jury, composed of five experts on the basis of the selection criteria. Based on the recommendations of the International Jury, the Director-General of UNESCO will select the finalists to be awarded at the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8 September.

Currently there are two UNESCO International Literacy Prizes:

• The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize (3 awards)

Established in 1989, with the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea. It gives special consideration to mother language-based literacy development.

Each of the three UNESCO King Sejong prizewinners receives a medal, a diploma and US$20.000.

• The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy (3 awards)

The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy, established in 2005, with the support of the Government of the People’s Republic of China. It gives special consideration functional literacy, leveraging technological environments, in support of adults in rural areas and out-of-school youth.

Each of the three UNESCO Confucius prizewinners receives a medal, a diploma and US$30.000.

Deadlines:

• Deadline for candidates to submit applications to nominating entities: 6 June 2022 (midnight, Paris time).
• Deadline for nominating entities to submit their nominations to UNESCO: 20 June 2022 (midnight, Paris time).

UNESCO is calling for applications and nominations for the 2019 UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, which this year will award outstanding programmes and individuals who promote literacy around the world within the theme of ‘Literacy and Multilingualism’.

Since 1967, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes have rewarded excellence and innovation in the field of literacy. Over 490 projects and programmes undertaken by governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world have already received recognition and support for their excellent work.

The promotion of multilingualism as an asset for both literacy and educational development in general and more particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) and its target 4.6 in terms of inclusivity quality and expanding access. Multilingual education facilitates access to education while promoting equity for populations speaking minority and/or indigenous languages, especially girls and women.

Through two prestigious Prizes, UNESCO supports effective literacy practices and encourages the promotion of dynamic literate societies to close the literacy gap of approximately 750 millions of people.

UNESCO distinguishes between two Literacy Prizes which are given to five laureates:

The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize (2 awards), was established in 1989 and is supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea. It gives special consideration to programmes that focus on the development and use of mother-tongue literacy education and training.

The UNESCO Confucius Prize for Literacy (3 awards), was established in 2005, and is supported by the Government of the People’s Republic of China. This Prize recognizes programmes that promote adult literacy, especially in rural areas and for out-of-school youth, particularly girls and women.

Each of the prize 0winners receives a medal, a diploma and US$20,000.

Requirements

Governments, non-governmental organizations and individuals are kindly invited to apply. All applications should be submitted to nominating entities, such as the National Commission for UNESCO in the country of the programme, or an NGO that is in an official partnership with UNESCO. Applications can be submitted via the online platform, detailed information about the application and nomination process is to be found on the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes’ website.

All programmes and projects must meet the selection criteria in order to be taken into consideration.

Concerned governments of UNESCO Member States and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO are encouraged to take into account individuals, institutions and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of literacy and requested a nomination.

The deadline for submitting applications for nominations: 16 June 2019 (midnight, Paris time).

The deadline for nominating entities to submit their nominations to UNESCO: 23 June 2019 (midnight, Paris time).

The nominations will be assessed by an independent International Jury, composed of five experts on the basis of the selection criteria. Based on the recommendations of the International Jury, the Director-General of UNESCO will be select the finalists to award the Prizes at the occasion of International Literacy Day (8 September).
