2016 Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology – Accra,Ghana (Scholarships Available)

The digital gender divide remains an unacceptable barrier to achieving the vision of a thriving Africa that benefits all her people. Join us in Accra on September 13-14 for the inaugural Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology to help find solutions to bridge this gap.

Web Foundation are jointly organising the Summit with the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), in collaboration with UN Women, the Ghana­-India Kofi Annan Center of Excellence in ICT (AITI­-KACE), and the African Development Bank.  The forum will explore how technology policy can further the rights and interests of women and girls in Africa so that millions of African women and girls can benefit from access to technology and use their skills to build a better Africa for all.

It is an opportunity to join technologists, women’s rights activists, and policy experts to discuss key issues such as access to affordable broadband, women’s rights online, digital education and skills, and digital entrepreneurship.

Travel Assistance

Limited travel scholarships will be awarded through a competitive process to support participation by women and girls based outside of Accra, Ghana. Other participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodations.

If you require travel support, please register and answer the additional questions on travel request. We encourage you to submit as soon as possible.

For your convenience, the questions are copied below. We recommend you prepare your responses in advance so you can easily paste into the registration form. Please keep your responses brief, ideally less than 75 words each.

The Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology is a collaboration between UN Women, the Alliance for Affordable Internet, the World Wide Web Foundation, the Ghana­-India Kofi Annan Center of Excellence in ICT, and the African Development Bank.

Bridging the digital gender gap is a critical step toward the vision of a thriving Africa—yet women are up to 50 percent less likely than men to be online. Join the design solutions to enable millions of African women and girls to benefit from access to technology—and use their skills to build a better Africa for all. This summit is a critical forum focused on how technology policy can further the rights and interests of African women and girls.

The Summit aims to connect women’s rights advocates and policymakers with Internet rights advocates, broadband policy leaders, and leading and aspiring women technologists and innovators in Africa. Participants will debate solutions and contribute to ongoing policy processes in the continent on broadband Internet access, sustainable development, and women’s empowerment.

Attecndance

Call for Nominations: ITU/UN Women GEM-Tech Awards 2016

The third annual Gender Equality and Mainstreaming in Technology (GEM-Tech) Awards by UN Women and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU),has opened a call for nominations. This prestigious global prize recognizes outstanding contributions from women and men (individuals and organizations) in addressing the digital gender divide by embracing the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to empower women and girls.

GEM-TECH Awards 2016 will be tied to the Forum of Telecom World 2016 to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 14-17 November considering that it aims at recognizing how to maximize new opportunities by bridging the digital divide including the achievement of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The 2016 GEM-tech awards will focus on three categories:

  1. Apply Technology for Women’s Empowerment and Digital Inclusion: initiatives related to women’s social, economic, political empowerment, combatting gender-based violence (both offline and online), and driving sustainable development.
  2. Promote Women in the Technology Sector: initiatives that promote more gender equality in ICT/STEM education and careers, especially initiatives where girls and women are cultivated as creators, developers, leaders and decision-makers.
  3. Develop Gender-Responsive ICT Governance: initiatives focused on new legislation, policy frameworks or internal corporate strategy to improve   women’s access, connectivity, security, digital literacy and citizenship, skills development and rights.
   Gem tech banner new.jpgThe annual GEM-TECH Awards, jointly organized by ITU and UN Women, celebrate personal or organizational achievements and innovative strategies to advance Gender Equality and Mainstreaming in the area of ICTs. GEM-TECH Awards provides a platform for advancing women’s meaningful engagement with ICTs and their role as decision-makers and producers in the technology sector.

The only international prizes of their kind, GEM-Tech Awards were celebrated in Busan, Rep. of Korea, 2014 and in New York, USA 2015.

2015 UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality – women-led Civil Society Organizations .

UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality is pleased to announce its 3rd Call for Proposals for women-led Civil Society Organizations programmes for women’s economic and political empowerment.
UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality was launched in 2009 to accelerate implementation of gender equality commitments worldwide. It is the organization’s leading global grant mechanism and multi-donor Fund dedicated to rights-based programming in the two overlapping thematic areas of Women’s Economic and Political Empowerment.
ELIGIBLE PROGRAMME PROPOSAL
  • An overall thematic focus on
(1) women’s economic rights and empowerment and/or
(2) women’s political rights and empowerment.
  • A 2 or 3 year implementation schedule only (one year proposal will not be considered)
  • An overall programmatic scope which is one of these three options (or a combination):
  • National (national level institutions, laws, policies, frameworks, commitments)
  • Regional (region-wide work with clear implementation strategies in up to 4 countries)
  • Local activities (at sub-national level or with particular communities that link to one or more gender equality laws and/or policies)
  • Geographic implementation only in eligible countries (OECD DAC list of ODA recipient countries 2) in one of the following regions:
  • Africa
  • Americas and the Caribbean
  • Arab States
  • Asia and the Pacific
  • Europe and Central Asia
GRANT AMOUNT AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
Grant request size: US$ 200,000 to US$ 500,000 for 2 or 3 year programmes
  • All applicants will have to demonstrate absorptive capacity and a financial management record commensurate with the grant request amount.
  • Technical Assistance: Successful applicants will also benefit from the following support from UN Women and the Fund:
  • Package of monitoring and technical support services
  • Impact tracking through Results Based Management support
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS for the Applicant Organization (for upload)
1. Proof of legal status by competent national authority
2. Certified financial audit reports for 2-3 previous fiscal years–including 2012, 2013 ( and 2014 if available)
3. List of all staff,board members of the applicant organization,with gender and position (especially leadership positions)
4. An organizational resume or CV–showing mandate focus area, expertise and past experience (1-2 pages)
5. Letter of Endorsement from a Gender Equality institution (not including UN Women)

2015 Women’s Empowerment Principles CEO Leadership Awards for Business Leaders

Nominations are now open for the prestigious 2015 WEPs CEO Leadership Awards, which recognize business leaders for their exceptional championship of gender equality and support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles. The Awards salute concrete and innovative actions taken to advance the 7 Principles and particularly Principle 1: Leadership Promotes Gender Equality.

The WEPs CEO Leadership Award of the Women’s Empowerment Principles- Equality Means Business (WEPs), a partnership initiative of UN Women and the UN Global Compact, recognizes business leaders for their exceptional championship of gender equality and support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles.
The Award salutes concrete and innovative actions taken to advance the 7 Principles and particularly Principle1: Leadership Promotes Gender Equality. Award recipients will have the opportunity to speak directly about their commitment at a ceremony held at the United Nations during the Annual Women’s Empowerment Principles Event in March 2015.

Who is eligible to apply?
Nominations are open to companies who meet the following criteria:
  • CEOs (present or past) that have signed or intend to sign the WEPs CEO Statement of Support by 14 November 2014; and
  • Companies that are participants of the United Nations Global Compact or intend to become participants within the next six months
Five distinct award categories reflect that innovation and leadership comes in different forms:
1. Benchmarking for Change-
Recognizes a company for embedding accountability to achieve gender equality through meaningful metrics, indicators, and reporting to track and monitor the inclusion of women at all levels of the company’s operations.
2. Business Case for Action-
Recognizes a company for the implementation of a cross-cutting strategic initiative to sustainably establish inclusion and equality, and transform company behavior and practices.
3. Community Engagement
Recognizes a company for its alignment of values and business case applied to a long-term investment in community, leveraging community engagement to build community-driven and participatory local programmes.
4. Cultural Change for Empowerment
Recognizes a company for its public, unwavering and proactive commitment to gender equality throughout its business operations that is complemented by a record of expansive programming elevating women’s equality in the workplace and throughout their communities.
5. 7 Principles
Recognizes a company for taking coordinated action and implementing policies to deliver powerful results aligned with the 7 Principles.
When are the awardees notified?
The awardees will be notified by early January 2015. The public announcement will be made at the WEPs Annual Event in observance of International Women’s Day early March 2015. Please Note: Award recipients are expected to participate at the ceremony.

What:  Five minute platform to pitch their inspired idea to the world and win a US$25,000 grant.

Project Inspire: 5 Minutes to Change the World is a joint initiative by the Singapore Committee for UN Women and MasterCard to help young changemakers create a better world of opportunities for women and girls in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.

Launched in 2011 in celebration of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day and the 25th anniversary of MasterCard in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Project Inspire presents 18-35 year olds with a 5-minute platform to pitch their inspired idea to the world and win a US$25,000 grant.
