Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) Scholarships 2019/2020 for Study in the University of Oxford, UK (Fully Funded)

Every year, Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) will fund five scholarships for outstanding individuals from Nigeria and Ghana to pursue the Master of Public Policy degree at the Blavatnik School of Government (BSG), University of Oxford. AIG Scholars will be expected, upon graduation, to return to their home country and apply their learning experience as change agents in their country’s public sector.

To achieve the goal of being a catalyst for public sector transformation, AIG will every year, for five years starting in 2017, fund five scholarships for outstanding West Africans from all backgrounds who are passionate about the public sector, to pursue the Master of Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government , University of Oxford. Upon graduation, AIG Scholars will be expected to return to their home country and apply their learning experience as change agents in their country’s public sector.

The AIG Scholarships are full scholarships covering fees, accommodation and living expenses

The AIG Scholarships Programme is targeted at graduates between the ages of 25 and 35, some of whom may have work experience. The Scholars will be exceptionally intelligent graduates who have excelled academically as well as in other areas of their lives.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Citizen of Nigeria or Ghana
  • Age between 25 and 35 years
  • Achieved an academic standing sufficiently advanced to ensure admission to the University of Oxford and the MPP programme. This means a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree with honours (or equivalent international qualifications), as a minimum, in any discipline. For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.7 out of 4.0
  • Strong commitment to public service and a willingness to commit to working for a fixed number of years in your country’s public sector
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and resultant impact
  • Impeccable moral character

  • We will only contact applicants shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process and any inquiries regarding individual application status are strictly prohibited. Applications sent via post or in person are also NOT acceptable.
  • Candidates who emerge as finalists in the Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) selection process will be expected to apply directly to the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, for admissions. Finalists who are offered admission to the Master of Public Policy will be considered by the School in the final selection of AIG Scholars.

Call for Participants: Commonwealth Youth Council No Hate Speech Movement Training Course – London, UK (Fully Funded)

Applications are now open to join a course in London that builds the capacity of young people to counter hate speech and violent radicalisation.

Run by the Commonwealth Secretariat and Council of Europe, the five-day course will empower young leaders and youth workers from across the Commonwealth to develop counter narratives to hate speech and strengthen support for human rights through non-formal education and awareness-raising actions. The course starts in London at the Commonwealth’s headquarters on November 27.

The No Hate Speech Movement is a youth campaign of the Council of Europe to promote human rights online, helping to ensure that hate speech is unacceptable.  It also develops youth participation and citizenship on-line, including Internet governance processes.

The campaign is running in 44 countries since its launch in 2012.

Delegates for next month’s course will include youth leaders, youth workers, educators and government officials who work with young people on peace-building, dialogue or human rights through awareness-raising and educational activities.

Profile of Participants
  • The training course will reflect the regional diversity of the Commonwealth and invites Commonwealth citizens whom are active as youth leaders or activists, youth workers, educators and government officials active with young people on peace building, dialogue or human rights through awareness-raising and educational activities.
  • Special preference will be given to candidates whom are citizens of countries that experience violent extremism in one of its many forms.
  • Particular conditions, applicants must be:
  • Commonwealth Citizen
  • Youth Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 29
  • Submit a completed application by 22 October 2017
  • Available for the full duration of the training course
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not attended a Commonwealth funded training session or workshop in the past year

Travel Arrangements
  • The Commonwealth Secretariat will provide funded participants with a return economy class ticket by the most direct route to London, UK. The Secretariat will also cover any incurred visa costs for funded participants. Please kindly ensure to include the Traveller Form with your application. Applications received without a completed Traveller Form will be considered incomplete and rejected.
  • If you are successful in your application, you will be issued with a travel itinerary for perusal and confirmation. The ticket will then be issued and NO Changes will be allowed thereafter.
  • Accommodation and Meals
    a) Accommodation
    The Commonwealth Secretariat has arranged and will pay for accommodation on
    Bed & Breakfast basis for funded participants at the Generator Hostel.
    b) Meals-
  • Breakfast will be provided to those staying in the hostel.
    – Lunch will be provided on meetings days.
    – Cash per diem will be provided to funded participants for other meals in GBP at a rate of £10 per meal.
    c) Additional Expenses
    All additional expense such as extra meals, telephone, laundry, room service charges and gratuity, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and all costs for room services, printing and faxing will be at the participant’s own expense. The hostel has been instructed to invoice participants for chargeable services/items used/consumed, on or prior to departure from the hostel. All accounts must be settled in advance of departure.
  • Financial and Travel Arrangements
    Funder participants will be provided will an allowance to cover additional meals and incidentals. Participants are required to present their boarding passes to the designated
    officer Ms Patricia Crosby in order to collect their allowance.

The Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford is delighted to invite applications for the 2017-18 Africa Initiative for Governance (AIG) Fellowship.

The AIG Fellowship is awarded each year to an individual from West Africa who has demonstrated distinguished public service. AIG Fellows undertake a period of study, reflection and engagement of up to 6 months with scholars and students at the Blavatnik School of Government.

AIG Fellows have the opportunity to use their time at the School to further develop their understanding of specific policy issues and solutions. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on practices in other countries both within the Fellow’s region and beyond. AIG Fellows are expected to develop case studies and/or policy briefings or op-eds on their area of expertise. They would also be expected to share their expertise on policy implementation, for example by speaking at a masterclass or workshop. The School has a lively programme of events and Fellows are encouraged to participate fully in these.

Selection Criteria:

  • For 2017-18, applications are invited from those residing in Nigeria or Ghana.
  • The Fellowship will be awarded to an individual from who has made an outstanding contribution to the development and implementation of a policy that has yielded meaningful impact on the public good.
  • Candidates must demonstrate commitment to public service in their country, region and globally.
  • The Blavatnik School of Government are seeking applications from Fellows who wish to spend time for up to six months at the Blavatnik School between September 2017 and June 2018.

Benefits:

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for making their visa and travel arrangements to the UK.
  • Accommodation, visa costs and standard class return flights are covered by the AIG Fellowship funding, as well as reimbursement of reasonable living expenses in line with university guidelines and visa regulations.
  • Funding of family members is not included.

  • a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
  • written attestations from two referees to support your application; and
  • a covering letter setting out how you meet the criteria, your proposed area of study and reflection, how you would propose to engage in that area at the Blavatnik School, and indicative dates for your visit if successful.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships Programme 2017 for Study at the University of Cambridge, UK (Fully Funded)

The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are one of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world.  The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.

Scholarships are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. The selection criteria are:

  • outstanding intellectual ability
  • leadership potential
  • a commitment to improving the lives of others
  • a good fit between the applicant’s qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate programme at Cambridge for which they are applying

Eligibility Requirements:

Scholarships are available for a postgraduate degree in any subject at Cambridge for applicants who are ordinarily resident outside the United Kingdom

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

  • a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
  • applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:
    • PhD (three year research-only degree)
    • MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree)
    • One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)

Scholarship Worth:

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most generous international scholarships available. It covers the following costs:

Core components

  • the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate*
  • a maintenance allowance for a single student (£14,600 for 12 months at the 2016-17 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months)
  • one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
  • inbound visa costs & associated NHS surcharge costs

Discretionary components

The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:

  • Academic development funding – from £500 to £1,500, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
  • Family allowance – up to £10,120 for a first child and up to £4,320 for a second child (2016-17 rate). No funding is provided for a partner.
  • Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
  • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties
  • Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time
  • Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars may be provided

How to Apply:

Applicants apply on a single form for admission to a course and a College and for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

Standard applications (via the Graduate Admissions Office)

Applicants apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to their chosen postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge and a Cambridge College via the Graduate Admissions Office, using the Graduate Application Form and supporting documents.

It is not possible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship without applying to the University of Cambridge. You must apply for admission as a postgraduate student to the University of Cambridge and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship at the same time, using the one application pack.

[If you are applying for admission to the MBA or Master of Finance programme you apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship via the Judge Business School (see below)]

To be considered for postgraduate admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship all applicants must submit the following documents to the Graduate Admissions Office by the relevant deadline:-

  • Graduate Application Form (which includes a Gates Cambridge section)
  • Academic transcripts
  • 2 academic references
  • 1 personal reference (for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship)

Although not specifically required for the Gates Cambridge application, the Graduate Admissions Office or academic department may require some applicants to submit the following for admission to the University:

  • English language test scores (if English is not your first language)
  • A research proposal, an example of your written work, a GRE/GMAT score, etc. Not all applicants will be required to submit such documents – you will find details of what you need to submit in the Graduate Studies Prospectus and department website.

Timeline:

Deadlines for October 2017 entry: 12 October 2016 (US round) and 7 December 2016 (International round). Check which one applies to you.

The two application rounds:

  • Round 1: US citizens normally resident in the USA
  • Round 2: citizens of all countries other than the USA (except the United Kingdom) and US citizens normally resident outside the USA

JR Biotek Foundation (JRBF) Scientific Laboratory Training Workshop Scholarship 2017 at University of Cambridge, UK ( Fully Funded)

JR Biotek Foundation (JRBF) is offering a fully funded scholarship to a PhD student
studying in Africa to attend the JRBF Scientific Laboratory Training Workshop to be held at the University of Cambridge, UK from 27th March to 5th April 2017.

Selection Criteria and Eligibility

The ideal candidate must be:

  •  A PhD student studying in an African university/institution and currently undertaking research in the field of agriculture. Agricultural research projects with potential impact on food security in their home countries will be given priority.
  • Have proven intellectual and leadership abilities
  • Have the passion to advance knowledge and technical expertise in the field of
    agricultural research in their home institution
  • Number of scholarship: One
  • Value of scholarship: The scholarship covers all costs including travel and accommodation at Cambridge for the duration of the training (does not cover visa fees)Eligible Countries:
  • PhD Students studying in any African university

Course Agenda

  • The Scientific Laboratory Training Workshop is designed for agricultural research scientists and university-level teachers from universities and research institutes in Africa. Ideal candidates will be PhD-level students, scientists and lecturers who are currently involved in agricultural research and/or teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a clear need to acquire new knowledge and practical experience in molecular techniques utilized in the field of agricultural research.
