The Chevening British Library Fellowship 2019/2020 for International Experts (Fully Funded to the United Kingdom)

The Chevening British Library Fellowship is a collaboration between the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British Library, offering international experts a year-long professional project-based placement. Fellows will have the privilege of working with the extensive library’s collections, and benefit from the broad range of professional expertise of library staff. Please note that this fellowship is not suitable for those wanting to pursue their own research.

The British Library is the national library of the UK and one of the world’s greatest research libraries. The British Library’s collection encompasses all fields of knowledge in hundreds of languages, covering 3,500 years from some of the earliest written records to the digital collections of the present day, and range over all formats. As a public-facing, culturally-active research institute, Chevening is pleased to partner with the British Library to bring international experts to the UK to pursue a one-of-a-kind opportunity.

Fellows will undertake a period of professional project-based activity at the British Library, receiving support and supervision from library staff. Please note that this fellowship is not suitable for those wanting to pursue their own research. For the 2019/2020 academic year, two placements are on offer and will provide fellows with experience in strategic and policy work relevant to a national library. There is one placement per theme:

Theme 1 – Research on digitised archival material from Latin America and the Caribbean

This fellowship is available in the following countries:

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for a Chevening/British Library Fellowship, you must:​

  • Demonstrate the potential to rise to positions of leadership and influence
  • Demonstrate that you possess the personal, intellectual, and interpersonal attributes reflecting this potential
  • Be a citizen of one of the above listed countries, who will return to your home country at the end of the period of fellowship
  • Have a postgraduate (PG) level qualification (or equivalent professional training or experience in a relevant area) at the time of application
  • Have significant professional and/or academic research experience (at least five years)
  • Be currently employed or a currently enrolled PhD candidate (PhD must not be with a UK/EU or USA university)
  • Provide evidence of meeting at least the minimum English language abilities for Chevening Awards
  • Not hold dual nationality where one nationality is British (other than for nationals exempt from this requirement).
  • Not be employees, employees’ relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than two years before) of Her Majesty’s Government including the FCO (including FCO Posts), the British Council, DFID, MOD, BIS, UKTI and UKBA, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, or the British Library or any of their wholly-owned subsidiaries.
  • Applicants who have previously received financial benefit from a HMG-funded scholarship or fellowship are eligible to apply after a period of five years following the completion of their first HMG funded award and are required to demonstrate their career progression from that point

Chevening Clore Leadership Fellowship 2018/2019 for study in the UK (Fully Funded)

The Chevening Clore Leadership Fellowship is a partnership between the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Clore Leadership Programme, offering mid-career professionals in the arts and culture sector an exceptional opportunity to undertake an individually tailored leadership programme in the UK. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office funds up to six international fellows to become part of a cohort of approximately 25 fellows, from across the UK and internationally, on the Clore Leadership Programme. The Programme has been shaping exceptional cultural leaders for the last 13 years.

The fellowship brings together some of the most creative and dynamic cultural leaders in the UK and beyond for a life-changing adventure – it is an intense personal and professional learning experience unlike any other. The fellowship will support you to be the leader you have the potential to be, through in-depth learning tailored to your individual needs, aspirations and circumstances. Give yourself the space to think, learn and do.

Fellows take up to seven months to focus on their leadership development while staying connected to their workplace. They benefit from a diverse peer group, access to experienced leaders, thinkers, entrepreneurs, artists, experts and extensive networks.

Requirements:

From artists and entrepreneurs to heads of established institutions, the Chevening Clore Leadership Fellowships nurture dynamic and diverse leaders. The participants are drawn from a range of specialisms including:

• Visual and performing arts;
• Film and digital media;
• Libraries, museums, archives, and heritage;
• Cultural policy.

To be eligible for a Chevening/Clore Fellowship, you must:

  • Intend to return to the country they were selected from at the end of the period of study.
  • Hold a degree that is equivalent to at least a good UK second-class honours degree or have equivalent professional training and/or experience.
  • Have completed at least five years’ (or higher as required by the Clore Leadership Programme) work, or equivalent experience, by the end of September in the year prior to the academic year for which the fellowship applies (e.g. by September 2017 for courses starting from September 2018).
  • Have not already received or be receiving financial benefit from an HMG funded scholarship or fellowship.
  • Meet one of the minimum requirements in accordance with the main fellowships scheme; OR where agreed, an English language assessment audit will be made based on the applicant’s written application and by observing the Chevening Clore interview
  • Not hold dual nationality where one nationality is British (other than for nationals exempt from this requirement listed in the Chevening Guidance for Applicants).
  • Not be employees, employees’ relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than two years before) of Her Majesty’s Government including the FCO (including FCO Posts), the British Council, DFID, MOD, BIS, UKTI and UKBA, the Association of Commonwealth Universities or the Clore Leadership Programme or any of their wholly-owned subsidiaries.

Structure of the Chevening Clore Leadership Fellowship

The structure of the programme includes residential courses, an extended placement, individually selected training and mentoring. The Fellows have proved to be a self-sustaining network in a growing international family.

As a part of the Clore Leadership Programme, each international fellow will undertake an individually tailored programme based in the UK which will include:

  • Attendance at two mandatory intensive residential leadership courses (lasting two weeks each) with their group of Clore Fellows; the first takes place in September/October at the start of the academic year and the second in June/July at the end of the academic year;
  • A period of secondment for approximately eight weeks at a cultural institution in the UK;
  • Participation in courses and conferences in the UK;
  • Support from a mentor in the UK.

The majority of the fellows’ individual training and development programmes, including their secondments, mentoring, attendance at courses and conferences, and the second residential course will take place in the period between April and July of 2019; the fellowship will be completed by 31 July 2019.

The fellowship starts in September 2018 and runs throughout the academic year, with fellows travelling between their home country and the UK to undertake the fellowship.
