Algeria Youth Leadership cultural exchange Program 2019 for young Algerians (Fully Funded to USA)

The Algeria Youth Leadership Program is a four-week, fully funded, U.S-based cultural exchange program, focused on the primary themes of civic education, youth leadership development, respect for diversity, and community engagement. Participants will engage in a variety of activities, such as workshops on leadership and service, community site visits related to the program themes, interactive training and discussion groups, small group work, presentations, local cultural activities, and homestays with American families, among other activities.

The program will be intensive, academic, and highly interactive to the end that participants develop their skills in order to be effective leaders in their schools and communities. Participants will work with professors and students from the University of Nevada School of Business and that Reynold School of Journalism, local consultants and community businesses and organizations. Participants will use the skills gained in this program to create a service project for their home community.

This Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Northern Nevada International Center.

U.S. Department of State’s 2018 Pan-Africa Youth Leadership Program for high school students (Fully Funded to USA)

U.S. Department of State’s Pan-Africa Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP) 2018 is a three-week exchange program in the United States for high school students aged 15-18 years old.

The Pan-Africa Youth Leadership Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, brings mixed-country delegations of high school students and adult mentors to the United States to explore themes such as entrepreneurship, the environment and public health.

The Pan-Africa Youth Leadership Program will target as many as 39 countries to support the U.S. government goals of fostering regional cooperation on the continent in addition to nurturing young leaders. The program will provide an opportunity for high school students from an African country to travel to the U.S. to participate in leadership programs. The program will take place from April 8 to 29, 2018.

During the exchanges, participants will engage in workshops on leadership and service, community site visits related to the program themes and subthemes, interactive training, presentations, visits to high schools, local cultural activities, and homestays with local American families.  Follow-on activities with the participants are an integral part of the program, as the students apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired by planning service projects in their home communities.

Profile of the ideal candidate:

The youth participants will be high school students aged 15 to 18 years old at the start of the exchange who demonstrate leadership potential through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities.

Eligibility Requirements: Students must:

  1. Be a high school student who is 15, 16, 17, or 18 years of age by the start of the exchange;
  2. Be proficient in English;
  3. Attend at least one semester of high school in their home country following completion of the program; i.e. in grade 11 or 12 as at January 2018;
  4. Indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States;
  5. Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in their school or community;
  6. Have a high level of academic achievement, as indicated by academic grades, awards, and teacher recommendations;
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to community service and extracurricular activities;
  8. Have had little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country;
  9. Be mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful and inquisitive;
  10. Be willing and able to fully participate in an intensive program, community service, and active educational travel program during the exchange, as well as in follow-up activities afterward in their home countries.

Between the Lines International Writing Program 2017 for Young Aspiring Writers – Iowa, USA (Fully Funded)

In the summer of 2017 BTL will once again host its combined session, which unites students from Russia, Arabic-speaking countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa, and the United States. Focusing on Peace and the Writing Experience, the session will bring together young writers from diverse backgrounds to explore distinct histories, languages, and cultures while also approaching world literatures and writing as a dialogue that leads to empathy and a shared understanding of the human condition.

For two exciting weeks, participants learn from one another through creative writing workshops, global literature seminars, and special events featuring international authors, guest speakers, and cultural exchange activities.

BTL is a small, structured program run by experienced staff of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, located in Iowa City, a UNESCO City of Literature and home to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Participants live in university dorms with trained counselors—themselves writers—and are taught by a faculty of prize-winning poets and writers from the U.S. and abroad. By the end of each session, participants will have grown not only as writers but also as citizens of the world, becoming part of a tight-knit international network.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students must be between 16-19 years old by the start of the program.
  • International students travel to the U.S. with an adult chaperone. If you are between the ages of 25-40 and interested in being a chaperone, please read the Chaperone Application Form listed under “Additional Resources” on the BTL 2017 page.
  • Chaperones are typically teachers and/or writers in eligible countries with an interest in learning about writing pedagogy and improving their own craft of creative writing.

Eligible Countries:

BTL Russian/Arabic session: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emerites, and Yemen.

BTL Sessions:

  • BTL Russian/Arabic: July 1-15
  • BTL Identity & Belonging: July 22-29

Benefits:

  • Because international students accepted into BTL have all expenses paid for by grants from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, international applicants will apply to the participating U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country.
  • You must then go through a process of nomination.

  • The 2017 Between the Lines session will include discussion of identity as it relates to creative writing, and the life of a writer. Please include 3-5 pages in personal statement/response to the following:Family, friends, region, tribe, religious denomination, ethnic groups, class, gender, race,work, neighborhood, country, political parties—in our daily lives we navigate between different markers, adjusting our speech patterns and behavior to the demands of each encounter, narrating to ourselves stories about how and why we come to occupy a particular place in the scheme of things. What do you consider to be the strongest, most central aspects of your identity? What does it mean to you to be a member (or be seen as a member) of particular identity groups? In what way does your identity influence your creative writing?
  • A statement of purpose (250 words maximum, in English) describing why creative writing is important in your life, and what you hope to learn at our program in Iowa.

2015 TechWomen Emerging Leaders Program for women in Technology to study in the USA (Fully Funded)

TechWomen empowers, connects, and supports the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East by providing them the access and opportunity needed to advance their careers, pursue their dreams, and inspire women and girls in their communities.

Through mentorship and exchange, TechWomen strengthens participants’ professional capacity, increases mutual understanding between key networks of professionals, and expands girls’ interest in STEM careers by exposing them to female role models.

TechWomen is an Initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs

2015 TechWomen Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must

  • Be women with, at minimum, two years full-time professional experience in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math)
  • Have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree/four year university degree or equivalent
  • Be proficient in written and spoken English
  • Be citizens and permanent residents of Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya,  Morocco, Nigeria, the Palestinian Territories, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Yemen, or Zimbabwe at the time of application, and while participating in the program
  • Be eligible to obtain a U.S. J-1 exchange visitor visa
  • Not have applied for an immigrant visa to the United States, or participated in a visa lottery in the past five years
  • Not hold U.S. Citizenship or be a U.S. legal permanent resident

Selection Process

TechWomen participants are selected based on the eligibility requirements below. Applications are reviewed by independent selection committees composed of industry leaders and regional experts. Semifinalists may be interviewed by United States Embassy personnel in their country of permanent residence.

Covered Costs

The following costs are covered by the TechWomen program:

  • Roundtrip international airfare from participant home country to the United States
  • Domestic airfare from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.
  • Housing in San Francisco or Mountain View, California during the mentorship
  • Meals and incidentals
  • Hotel stay in Washington, D.C.
  • Ground transportation to the participant’s host company
  • Local transportation to group program events in the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington, D.C.

Participants are responsible for the cost of any non program activities such as independent sightseeing and cultural events, as well as any non program-related domestic or international travel.

Meal Stipend

The TechWomen program provides a stipend for each participant to cover meals during the program.

Housing

TechWomen participants will be housed in San Francisco or Mountain View, California, depending on the location of the participant’s host company. Participants will share an apartment with a fellow Emerging Leader. Each participant will have her own private bedroom, while the living room and kitchen will be shared.

The TechWomen program is unable to accommodate participants’ spouses, children, or other dependents.

Selection Timeline

  • December 16, 2014: Application opens
  • February 10, 2015: Application deadline
  • May 2015: Semifinalists may be contacted for interviews by local U.S. embassies and consulates
  • June 2015: All applicants notified of application status

Call for Artist Nomination for Center Stage Season 3 (Exchange Program of performing arts ensembles, USA)

What: Tour to six individual month-long tours will take place during the period of June to December of 2016.

Center Stage is an exchange program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Exchange programs initiated by the Bureau support U.S. foreign policy goals and engage youth, students, educators, artists, athletes, and rising leaders in the U.S. and more than 160 countries.  Center Stage uses the performing arts to support cultural understanding between American and international communities; participating artists experience the U.S. first hand and cultivate lasting relationships. It is administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts in cooperation with the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations, with management for Center Stage provided by Lisa Booth Management, Inc.

This is a worldwide open call for nominations of performing arts ensembles in all disciplines (dance, music, theater, multidisciplinary) from Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, and Tanzania for tours to the U.S. with Center StageSM.  Four to six individual month-long tours will take place during the period of June to December of 2016.

Nominations may be submitted by any individual or organization knowledgeable about performing arts ensembles in these four countries including, but not limited to artists and their representatives, presenters, arts organizations, public agencies, and U.S. embassy personnel.  Interested performing arts ensembles may also nominate themselves.  Multiple nominations for ensembles will be accepted. Nominations of ensembles working in contemporary forms are strongly encouraged.

Criteria:

  • The final four to six ensembles selected will represent two of these countries, and will be chosen through a curatorial process.
  • All members of the ensemble must be at least 18 years of age (by June 2016) and a permanent resident of the country in which the ensemble is based.
  • Nominations of ensembles working in contemporary forms are strongly encouraged

Artist Selection Criteria
• Demonstrate high artistic quality and accomplishment.
• Have an interest in engaging with U.S. communities, including youth, through public and in-school performances, workshops, discussions, artist-to-artist exchanges, and social events.
• Are comprised of two to nine ensemble members (artists and staff) who are citizens and residents of one of the eligible countries, Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, and Tanzania.
• Have previous touring experience but have rarely been seen in the U.S.
• Have an ability to communicate electronically via email and/or Skype, and a working knowledge of English and/or access to translators.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in exchange programs, welcome opportunities for mentoring and new partnership development, and exhibit confidence and maturity

What: Unlocking the Economic Potential of Digital Media

Who:  open for professional and citizen journalists, media business managers, digital media entrepreneurs and technologists from Middle East and North Africa.

“Unlocking the Economic Potential of Digital Media” is an 18-month, multi-phase program offered by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) for 30 digital media practitioners from the Middle East and North Africa and 10 from the United States.

The Professional Fellows program is open for professional and citizen journalists, media business managers, digital media entrepreneurs and technologists from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The accepted fellows will be asked to create media business models that harness the power of digital tools to generate sustainable new revenue. They will be matched with expert U.S.

Professional Fellows from the MENA region will have four-week programs in the United States anchored by 22-day internships at these institutions, while their U.S. counterparts will visit the MENA fellows’ homelands during two-week programs. The MENA fellows will be exposed to the latest innovations in the digital world while experiencing life in the United States. At the end of their program, they will participate in the Professional Fellows Congresses in Washington, D.C

 

The common factor linking this group is the interest they share in developing new media business models and products – rooted in digital technology – that are sustainable engines for independent sources of news and information.

The 2013 One Beat Fellowship Programme

OneBeat is an international cultural exchange that celebrates the transformative power of the arts through the creation of original, inventive music, and people-to-people diplomacy. In the fall of 2013, 25 musicians (ages 19-35) from around the world will come together in the U.S. for four weeks to collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop ways that music can make a positive impact on our local and global communities

OneBeat is divided into two segments, a residency and a tour.

  • During the residency, OneBeat Fellows will spend two weeks at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in central Florida, immersed in a process of collaborative music creation and experimentation.
  • During the two-week tour, OneBeat ensembles will collaborate with local musicians to give public performances and lead workshops with youth and community groups. OneBeat Fellows will also work with a diverse group of expert Collaborating Artists—including luminaries of classical music, hip-hop, jazz and more—to develop and deepen the scope of their collaborative work.
