The Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program’s Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program (Tunisia UGRAD) and Tunisia Community College Scholarship Program (TCCSP)are now accepting applications from Tunisian undergraduate students for the 2018-2019 academic year.

This program builds the employability skills of a diverse group of youth from across Tunisia. Through academic, cultural, and professional programming, the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program provides Tunisian youth with opportunities to develop the skills needed to contribute to Tunisia’s development.

Since the program’s inception in 2013, more than 460 undergraduate students from all 24 governorates of Tunisia have studied in colleges and universities across the United States. Through programming focused on skill-building and leadership growth, students enhance their academic and English skills, develop their leadership capacity, and strengthen their professional expertise, which promotes development in Tunisia. In a recent survey, more than 80% of Thomas Jefferson Scholars who returned home and completed their education reported that they are now employed.

Students return home ready to make an impact in their community and country as part of a globalized world. Hana, a recent Thomas Jefferson Scholar, credits technical and professional skills gained through the program as key factors that led her to find an internship in Tunisia.

Eligibility Requirements:

The Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program does not discriminate against applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, or any other protected characteristic as established by U.S. law. Competition for the Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program is merit-based and open to anyone who:
• Is a Tunisian citizen;
• Is currently enrolled as a first-or second-year full-time undergraduate (Licence) student in
good academic standing at the time of application at a registered academic institution in Tunisia;
o Architecture students are eligible in their first-, second-, third-, or fourth-year of study. Engineering students are eligible in their first-, or second-year (preparatory classes), and third
– and fourth- year of undergraduate study;
o If you study at an ISSAT (Institut Supérieur des Sciences Appliquées et de Technologie) please see the Tunisia Community College Scholarship Program application.
• Is currently residing in Tunisia;
• Is able to receive a U.S. J-1 visa;
• Is at least 18 years old by July 1, 2018
• Is committed to returning to Tunisia after completion of the program; and
• Is able to achieve a TOEFL score of 500 (PBT) or likely to achieve this score after short term pre-academic English training in the United States prior to the start of the academic year.

As part of the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program, the Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program (Tunisia UGRAD) builds the workforce capacity of a diverse group of youth leaders from across all regions of Tunisia. The program provides participants with a deeper understanding of American culture and new globally-applicable skills and expertise to help them contribute to the economic growth and development of their country.

Through year-long programs of study in the U.S., exploration of American culture, community service, and professional internships, Thomas Jefferson scholars develop a broad and nuanced understanding of U.S. values and become 21st century global citizens prepared to contribute to the economic growth and development of Tunisia. The Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

SELECTION PROCESS AND CRITERIA
  • Tunisia UGRAD is conducted as a merit-based open competition. After the deadline, all eligible applications will be reviewed by a panel of academic specialists. Chosen semi- finalists will be interviewed in Tunisia by a bi-national committee of U.S. specialists,USG alumni, and/or U.S. Embassy representatives, and must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in early 2016.
  • All applicants will be notified of their status in spring 2016.
  • Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications (not in order of importance):
  • Academic excellence;
  • Expressed commitment to contribute to Tunisia’s economic development;
  • Demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to community engagement;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • Flexibility and adaptability as an exchange student; and
  • Minimum TOEFL of 500 PBT or ability to achieve a 500 following short-term intensive English language training.
  • Preference will be given to students that represent disadvantaged and underrepresented communities.

Scholarship Worth:

  • This fully- funded scholarship provides J-1 visa support, round-trip travel from participant’s home city to their host institution in the U.S., accident and sickness coverage, tuition and mandatory university fees, room and board (housing and meals), small incidentals allowance, limited allowance for books, and a wide variety of alumni networking and training opportunities.
As part of the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship Program, the 2015-2016 Tunisia Undergraduate Scholarship Program, a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, provides opportunities for outstanding undergraduate students from Tunisia for one year of full-time, non-degree study in the United States.
Students will attend four-year universities and colleges and will live in on-campus housing (dormitories). Participants may submit U.S. transcripts to their home institution for review upon completion of the program to determine if the credits are transferrable.
The program will provide participants with a deeper understanding of American culture and new globally- applicable skills and expertise to help them contribute to the economic growth and development of their country.

Eligibility:

The Tunisia UGRAD Program is open to current undergraduate students from a broad variety of fields of study.
Eligible applicants are :
  • Citizens and nationals of Tunisia, currently residing in Tunisia;
  • Undergraduate students enrolled as a first-or second-year full-time student (LMD/3-yearsystem); or
  • Undergraduate students enrolled as a first-,second-, or third-year full-time student(American/4-yearsystem); or
  • Architecture and Engineering students in their first-, second-,third-and fourth-year of undergraduate study;
  • At least 18 years old by July 1, 2015
  • Committed to returning to Tunisia after completion of the program; and
  • Able to achieve a TOEFL score of 500 PBT.

All participants will:
  • Attend classes full-time for one academic year;
  • Perform a minimum of 20 hours of community service in their host community during their first semester;
  • Complete a part-time professional internship during their second semester; and
  • Live in dormitories at four- year colleges and universities. Single sex dormitories are generally available for women

Project Activities

Undergraduate Study and Skills Building: Participants attend a year-long, academic program at U.S. universities and colleges, which includes coursework in their fields of study and in an American studies topic.

Community Service: Students give back to their American host communities by contributing a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer work during the semester. Students may volunteer in a variety of settings, such as after-school tutoring, community fundraisers, and disaster relief.

Internships: Fellows complete part-time internships, gaining experience in the American workplace and developing relationships with local businesses, government offices, nonprofit organizations, and other institutions.

Country Presentations: Students give at least one required presentation on Tunisia while in the U.S., sharing their country’s history and traditions with Americans.

Cultural Passport to America: Participants present and reflect on how they have explored various aspects of U.S. culture, the linkages they’ve forged with Americans throughout the program and on their plans for sharing U.S. culture with their communities when returning home.

Alumni Programming: Alumni are provided with opportunities to continue to develop their workforce skills, support innovation and entrepreneurship, and maintain networks forged through the program.

Students with a strong interest in global citizenship and innovation are strongly encouraged to apply. Participants are selected through an open, merit-based competition.
