Transparency International Future Against Corruption Competition 2018 for young people (Funded to Berlin, Germany)

Since 1993, Transparency International (TI) has been leading the fight against corruption worldwide, working in more than 100 countries as part of a broader global movement. What TI’s work has consistently proven is that corruption can be challenged.

TI is calling on young people across the globe to join the anti-corruption movement and be a source of inspiration in the fight against corruption. The innovative drive of young people advocating for fairer and more equal societies around the world can be a huge asset to our growing movement. Now is the time to end corruption.

In light of Transparency International’s 25th anniversary and the International Anti-Corruption Day on 9th December 2018, TI is collaborating with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to honour young people from all over the world who challenge corruption through their innovative and inspiring ideas.

People between the age of 18 and 35 are invited to submit a short video clip presenting their idea on new ways to fight corruption.

The FutureAgainstCorruption Award may be conferred to activists from all walks of life. Three Finalists will be selected out of the submitted entries by the general public as well as the FutureAgainstCorruption Award Committee. In choosing the recipients, the need to recognise efforts in diverse fields of civil society and the acknowledgement of anti-corruption initiatives throughout the world will be taken into consideration. The competition will consist of two entry streams: Global and Africa. Two Award recipients will be selected from the global stream and one from the African stream.

Eligibility

Participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Eligible participants must be above the age of 18 and under the age of 35.
  • Be available to travel to Berlin during the week of the International Anti-Corruption Day (9 December – 11 December 2018)
  • The idea should be one likely to attract interest and emulation in other parts of the world, particularly those with existing levels of corruption.
  • The action must be particularly exemplary, inspirational and deserving of wide international recognition.

Benefits:

  • The three finalists will be invited to Berlin during the International Anti-Corruption Day festivities to be awarded with the FutureAgainstCorruption Award and to participate at a public ceremony, hosted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and Transparency International.
  • They will have the opportunity to present and discuss their ideas with anti-corruption experts from the German government, Transparency International and representatives from anti-corruption organisations and the media.

How to apply

Interested individuals should upload their innovative idea against corruption in the form of a short video clip (maximum 60 seconds) on their individual Youtube channel and in addition, send an email to [email protected] with the following information:

  • Name of Participant
  • Country of Residence
  • Year of Birth
  • Scan of ID/Passport
  • Email address
  • Link to video on Youtube

The deadline for submission is 30 October 2018.

9.11.18 – Posting of the top 10 videos on Youtube for general public to vote on

19.11.18 – Top 3 competition entries (1 – Africa, 2 – Global) identified by general public vote and Award Committee

The competition winner will also have the chance to discuss with the relevant National Chapter and the local German Cooperation office about ways of putting into practice the ideas featured in the winning video entry.

Transparency International/Ashoka ChangemakerXchange 2016 for Southern Africans (Fully Funded to Johannesburg, South Africa)

Across Africa, one in every two people needing to access land-related services is affected by corruption. This could be a bribe demanded by a housing official, a dodgy business deal that forces local communities off their land, or a fraud scheme by bogus property developers. This kind of corruption plays out in the public and private sectors and affects rural and urban citizens alike.

For young people, land-related corruption can sap entrepreneurial spirit and restrict access to employment, forcing migration to overcrowded urban centres where competition for jobs is even greater.

To help change this situation, Transparency International has teamed up with Ashoka and the International Anti-Corruption Conference to launch the first ChangemakerXchange in Southern Africa from 2 – 5 October in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Eligibility:
* You need to be aged 18 – 35
* You must live in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia or Zimbabwe
* Ashoka welcome social entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, journalists, bloggers, artists, government employees, and young changemakers from other fields with an interest in anti-corruption. You don’t have to be an existing social entrepreneur to apply – applications are open to anyone in the specified age group from the private or public sectors, civil society or the media.

Examples of the participants could be:
* A social entrepreneur who has a startup fighting corruption
* A journalist
* NGO activist
* Government employee
* Hacktivist
* Business person working in the private sector

Benefits:

  • The Organizers will cover the expenses for your economy travel, visa, meals, and four nights of accommodation from 2 – 5 October 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • In addition to networking and project collaboration opportunities during these three days, participants will receive mentoring by established social entrepreneurs, as well as international anti-corruption experts and land activists.
  • An international panel of judges will assess each idea to come out of the summit and the participants / teams with the strongest collaboration-based submissions will get seed grants of between €1,500 and €2,000 to support the implementation of their new land-related anti-corruption project.
  • Also up for grabs is a trip to Panama from 1 – 4 December 2016 to participate in the 17th International Anti-Corruption Conference.

Transparency International Photography Competition 2015 (A paid trip to Malaysia to participate in the 16th International Anti-Corruption Conference)

Contest theme: Illustrate the negative effects that corruption has on your world.

Images have the power to bring about change. They evoke emotion and deliver information that can spur people to action. This is true in the fight against corruption, but capturing the devastating effect that corruption has on people’s lives is hard.

That’s why Transparency International, the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the International Anti-Corruption Conference are sponsoring Capturing Corruption, a photography competition that is looking for imaginative and powerful images that show the corrosive effects of corruption.

Eligibility:

Whether you’re a student who photographs as a hobby, a professional photographer or are just looking for inspiration to use your new camera– we encourage everyone* to apply.

In order to be an eligible participant of the photo competition, applicants MUST:

  • Be 18 years old or older on 15 July 2015.
  • Submit a photo in digital format and which meets the criteria set out in the Guidelines/How to enter section below. No print or video submissions will be accepted.

What can you win?

There will be three winners in each of the two categories, plus the chance for runners up to have their work published on both the Transparency International and Thomson Reuters Foundation websites.

The two age categories are: (1) 18-30 years old* and (2) 31 years old and older.

The jury will award three winners in each category:

  • 1st prize: A paid trip to Malaysia to participate in the 16th International Anti-Corruption Conference (2-4 September 2015) and participation in a Thomson Reuters Foundation Photo Journalist course. The all-expenses paid course will combine theory with practical work, and a focus on building a portfolio worthy of publication on the Reuters news wire.
  • 2nd prize: €500
  • 3rd prize: €250

The photographic work of all winners and seven runners-up in each category will be published on the Transparency International website and the Thomson Reuters Foundation website.

* The competition youth category is in memory of Jesse Garcia who passed away in 2013. He was dedicated to bringing to life the work of Transparency International in images.

The deadline for submissions is 12 June 2015.

The winners will be announced in July 2015.

Guidelines:

  • The deadline for submissions is 12 June 2015. There is no fee associated with entering the competition.
  • Each entrant may submit a maximum of 3 photos, in digital formats (JPEG/GIF/TIFF). We will also accept mobile photo entries.
  • The maximum file size is 10mb per photo.
  • Minimum resolution of 300 DPI is required.
  • The relevant age category as outlined previously must be selected.
  • Photo submissions must be unpublished.
  • By submitting an entry, the contestant confirms that he/she owns the right to all his/her photo(s), including intellectual property, and that the rights of a person or persons included in his/her photo(s) (subject) have not been violated. This is further addressed in the Terms and Conditions section.
  • Entries depicting violence, racism or pornography will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Captions are critical. Each photo must be accompanied with a short conceptualisation caption (maximum 600 characters). Well-written captions are needed so that judges understand the context of the image. Only captions in English, French, German and Spanish languages will be accepted for the entry to the competition.

Call for Applications for 2014 Youth, Innovation and Transparency Camp,Nairobi Kenya

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Infonet Africa, Transparency International and the Presidency Republic of Kenya is calling for applications for the 2014 Africa Youth Integrity Camp. The theme this year will focus on enhancing accountability in public service through Innovation and Integrity.

Requirements:

  • The focus is thus on Young people between the ages of 25 to 35 working within the following specific sectors:
  • public sectors (including youths in every ministerial department and electoral management bodies),
  • private sector and civil society organizations and the media. only successful candidates will be contacted and invited for the Youth Camp scheduled for from 8 to 14 December 2014 in Nairobi, Kenya.

2014 International Anti-Corruption Conference’s Social Entrepreneurs Initiative Global (5000 Euros Prize)

The IACC and Transparency International (TI) places a strong emphasis on promoting citizen engagement and enabling citizens to take the active role in becoming change makers in their own societies. This is the idea behind the International Anti-Corruption Conference’s Social Entrepreneurs Initiative.

The initiative aims to support innovative ideas from all members of society to boost transparency, accountability and help the fight corruption in their communities. The competition opens on the 22th August and the application deadline is the 15th October 2014. Winners will be notified by the end of November 2014.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Anyone with an innovative idea to increase transparency and integrity in their society is welcome to submit a proposal to the Global competition.
  • Applications should be in English.

Assessment criteria

Entries will be evaluated and nominated based on the following criteria among other factors:

  • Entrepreneurial vision
  • Feasibility
  • Innovation
  • Impact
  • Sustainability
  • Relevance to anti-corruption, integrity or transparency

Grants

  • Seed funding for a total of three projects, each worth 5000 Euros towards the implementation of your project.
  • The individuals behind the winning projects will join the SEI network, with each of the projects featured on the IACC SEI page.
  • The winners will be sponsored to participate in the next gathering of the International Anti-Corruption Conference.

Social Entrepreneurs Initiative for West Africa ‘Promoting Integrity in the Education Sector’ Competition (USD 3,000 in Prize)

In collaboration with the Open Society Institute for West Africa (OSIWA), Transparency International  is launching a Social Entrepreneurs Initiative (SEI) for West Africa. The initiative aims to support innovative ideas from young people to boost transparency, accountability and the fight corruption in their communities.

Participants should submit proposals for projects that offer an innovative approach to promoting integrity in the education sector. Specifically, the competition invites proposals that address some of the challenges highlighted in TI’s 2013 Global Corruption Report: Education.
The report explores the many faces of corruption in education, such as fake diplomas, buying of grades, and shadow education, and highlights ways it is being challenged.
The competition provides a platform for young entrepreneurs who aspire to create positive change in their communities. With their innovative ideas and leadership, young people can help tackle some of the key challenges of today and offer sustainable solutions for tomorrow.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Participants between the ages of 18 and 35 can apply.
  • Participants based in West Africa and from one of the following countries are eligible: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
  • The proposed projects must have direct impact in at least one of these countries.
  • Projects should reflect the themes of the Global Corruption Report: Education, and support activities that empower young people to develop change-maker skills such as entrepreneurship, teamwork, and leadership.
  • Applications must be in English, French or Portuguese.

Prizes

  • Awards – a total of three, each worth $3000 cash
  • The winners will be sponsored to participate in the International Anti-Corruption Conference to be held in Tunisia in October 2014
  • The individuals behind the winning projects will join the SEI network, with each of the projects featured on the IACC SEI page

The Transparency International Secretariat (TI-S) is seeking a highly motivated, pro-active intern to support its work in the Africa Department.

Main function: Assisting the Africa team in their work
Starting date: 1 February 2014
Duration: 6 months, full time
Department: Sub-Saharan Africa
Remuneration: EUR 450 (according to the German labour and social security law)
Location: Berlin, Germany

Key tasks:

  • Assisting with the implementation of a number of projects in the department, including the Advocacy and Legal Advice Centres, the Africa Regional Programme etc.
  • Assisting with the budget monitoring and financial reporting for on-going projects;
  • Assisting with preparations for the participation of delegates from National Chapters to attend a series of programme-related workshops in Sub-Saharan Africa (e.g. flight and hotel bookings, visa support );
  • Liaising with contact groups and National Chapters;
  • Assisting with the production of TI publications, by providing translation and/or proof reading of documents;
  • Monitoring international media for corruption related developments of interest to TI;
  • Assisting with small research tasks
  • Other various administrative tasks and support to the Africa department.

Knowledge, experience, interests and skills:

  • Academic background in political science / international relations / international development (other relevant fields will be considered);
  • Very good financial skills and financial reporting experience (required);
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications including proven experience of working with Excel at an advanced level (required);
  • Excellent knowledge of English and French (written and spoken) (required);
  • Some knowledge of, and considerable interest in, the work of TI and the field of anti-corruption;
  • Knowledge of, or proven interest in, the Sub-Saharan Africa region;
  • Adaptable and flexible personality, good time management skills, able to handle multiple tasks and workloads, ability to prioritise own work;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities, good team player;
  • Some prior office experience very desirable.

2013 Youth Integrity Camp for Anglophone West Africans.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Transparency International ,The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC)  and other stakeholders, hereby invites application for the  2013 Anglophone West Africa Youth Integrity Camp in Nigeria (5-day Youth Integrity Camp for youth leaders from Anglophone West African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, the Gambia and Sierra Leone) in Lagos, Nigeria on the 23rd – 27th of September 2013.

The camp is organised with the conviction that a strong and responsible leadership in these sectors must be anchored by one of the main pillars of the country, the youth. The goal is to give these young leaders the tools and motivation to become active defenders of open and responsible governance, by effectively applying principles of integrity, transparency, accountability, and the participation and mobilisation of their peers.

During the camp, the youth leaders will work on their own concrete project, to be implemented in their home countries, as well as learn about different tools that exist in the fight against corruption. In this joint project, the UNDP and Transparency International want to create a framework for exchange and debate among these youth leaders, and incorporate principles of integrity into their behaviour and the environment.

The Youth Integrity Camp will bring together youth leaders from business, politics, public sector, civil society organizations, media, university, art, sports and religion, etc in order to:

  • Empower the youth to use their dynamism and innovative minds to promote integrity and public accountability;
  • Provide the youth with tools to enhance their efforts as agents of change in their respective communities as relates to fighting corruption and promoting public accountability;
  • Provide a forum for exchanging innovative approaches, ideas and best practices from the different countries of the sub-region towards improving transparency, accountability and participation in their respective communities.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Membership of a youth association/organisation from the following sectors: sports, music, politics, education, professional, private/public sector, civil society, media, universities and religious bodies/associations.
  • Be between 18-35 years
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Have completed senior secondary school (minimum requirement)
  • Female youth who satisfy the above criteria are strongly encouraged to apply.

Method of Application:

  1. Evidence of membership of a youth association/ organization from the aforementioned sectors, such as a signed letter from a member of the association’s board on the official letter-head of the association.
  2. A current and updated CV (max. 2 pages);
  3. Scanned copy of certificate from highest level of education achieved;
  4. A 1 – page document enumerating motivations and interests in participating; and
  5. A 1- page proposal of a project on how integrity can be translated into action. In the course of the camp, project proposals will be discussed and information provided on how to translate proposed projects into concrete actions. Potential participants are encouraged to consider exploring creative ways of putting a “human face” on the sums of money lost to corruption. The use of research, information technology and available media tools is highly encouraged to paint a “before” and “after” picture of how funds that have been lost to acts of corruption could have been used to transform a local community/state or a particular sector (e.g. health, education, water resources, agriculture etc).
