Applications are now open for the 2024 Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award. The annual competition is organised in partnership with the UK’s Foreign Press Association (FPA) and is presented at their annual awards event in London. The competition enables journalists aged 30 and under, from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than USD20,000, to send in their best stories to be examined by the judges.

Requirements

AGE: Entrants must be 30 years of age or under on 25 November 2024.
LOCATION: For the purpose of this competition the “developing world” is defined as countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) of US$20,000 or less. Entrants should be from a country that meets the GNI criteria and reporting from/in that country or, if not in their country of origination, in another country fitting the same GNI criteria. PORTFOLIO: Each entrant should submit a portfolio of THREE published or broadcast pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding 9 August, 2024 (the 12 months prior to the deadline for submissions).
LANGUAGE: Entries can be in any language but should be accompanied by a verbatim English-language translation.

Since 2013, the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award has celebrated the outstanding young talent in the media profession. The award is an opportunity for those brilliant young journalists to demonstrate a wealth of investigative journalism, and, in doing so hold power to account.

The annual competition is organised in partnership with the UK’s Foreign Press Association (FPA) and is presented at their annual awards event in London.

Requirements

The competition enables journalists aged 30 and under, from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than USD20,000, to send in their best stories.

The entries are scrutinised by the foundation and then independent, expert, FPA judges.

Benefits

The three finalists are flown to London to attend the gala award night in London, along with a host of other potential award winners and leading figures from the world of journalism.

How to Enter

Each entrant should submit a portfolio of THREE published or broadcast pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding (prior to) the award deadline for submissions which is midnight GMT on 11th August 2023 . The entries can be in any format: print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four.
All entrants should be reporting from their home country as defined by the GNI or, if not in their country of origin, in another country fitting the same criteria. Applicants also need to provide an explanation of any collaboration undertaken with colleagues or external organisations on the stories they submit.
Journalists who enter for the FPA award will need to submit a written statement of no more than 200 words per story giving a summary of the content and any impact it had on public debate in the country of publication or broadcast, should also be submitted.

Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2022 for Journalists worldwide

Thomson Foundation is offering six rising stars the chance to connect with six of the best journalists in the industry as part of the prestigious Young Journalist Award 2022.

This year’s award will be extra special for another reason, too. It will be the first time in two years that the three finalists will be able to attend the glittering ceremony in London in person. The pandemic of the past two years has meant finalists could only attend virtually.

To mark six decades of the foundation, the three finalists as well as the next three highest in the shortlist will have the opportunity to be mentored for six months by six established journalists from the alumni.

Requirements

Now in its 10th year, the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) is open to journalists aged 30 or under from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than $20,000.
Those who meet the criteria are welcome to submit a portfolio of three published pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding the deadline for submissions, which is 12 August, 2022.
They can be in any medium — print, audio, video or multimedia.

Benefits

The three Young Journalist Award finalists will automatically qualify for the mentorship programme.
The additional three will be selected from the shortlist of 12 to join them as part of our ongoing investment into ethical, independent and trusted journalism.
If you are one of the selected six, you’ll be provided with a unique package of support and paired with an established journalist matched to your region from the extensive alumni network.
You’ll learn from them how their exclusives and investigations have changed the world, and how yours can too.
In addition, all 12 journalists in the shortlist will be given space on the Thomson Foundation website and social media channels and receive a certificate from Thomson Foundation commending them on the high standard of their work.

Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2021 for Journalists worldwide (£1,000 learning bursaries)

The Young Journalist Award – in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association – is Thomson Foundation’s annual journalism competition dedicated to finding and inspiring ambitious journalists from across the globe.

Now in its ninth year, the award enables journalists aged 30 and under, from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than $20,000, to send in their best stories.

Judges of the award look for stories that are revelatory, prompt public debate and have led to, or have the potential to lead to, positive change in society.

In the year of COP26, the pivotal UN climate change conference, it is fitting that we should introduce an environmental component to our 2021 Young Journalist Award. Applicants will still be required to submit a portfolio of three stories and these can be a mixture of investigative pieces and human-interest stories. However, we will be asking all entrants to ensure at least ONE of the three pieces submitted has an environmental focus.

Applicants will still be required to submit a portfolio of three stories in any medium (print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four) and these can be a mixture of investigative pieces and human-interest stories. However, we will be asking all entrants to ensure at least ONE of the three pieces submitted has an environmental reporting element.

For clarity, environmental reporting is covering stories about the interaction of people and the natural world and the issues related to that interaction. Environmental stories should be focused on one or more of the subjects covered by environmental reporting: sustainability, pollution, nature/biodiversity and/or climate change.

Our free online courses in environmental journalism are available to help journalists investigate local stories and understand the environmental drivers behind them.

The portfolio of work submitted for the Young Journalist Award must be in the 12 months preceding the competition closing date, which is September 10th, 2021.

Benefits

Three finalists will be chosen by an independent judging panel selected by the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) and an overall Young Journalist Award winner will be revealed on the night of the FPA Awards on Monday 29th November, 2021.
All three finalists will be awarded £1,000 learning bursaries or funds to buy equipment.

PORTFOLIO:

Each entrant should submit a portfolio of THREE published or broadcast pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding 14th August, 2020 (the 12 months prior to the deadline for submissions).
The entries can be in any format: print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four.
Applicants can provide URL links to their stories online. If necessary, they can use a file-transfer application such as Google Drive for scans or PDFs of print articles, and for large audio or video files.
A written statement of no more than 200 words per story giving a summary of the content and any impact it had on public debate in the country of publication or broadcast, should also be submitted.

LANGUAGE:

Entries can be in any language but should be accompanied by a verbatim English-language translation.

VERIFICATION:

Entries should be accompanied by a letter from the applicant’s current editor, on headed company notepaper verifying that it is the published work of the entrant. Where an entrant is freelance, or self-employed, verification can be provided by an editor from one of the publications/websites/broadcasters where the work appeared, or by a journalism academic familiar with the work of the entrant.

*A VERIFICATION LETTER MUST BE SUPPLIED WITH YOUR SUBMISSION. THIS CAN BE SHARED WITH US VIA A LINK TO DROPBOX, GOOGLE DRIVE OR SIMILAR. ALTERNATIVELY, PLEASE SEND BY EMAIL TO [email protected] WITH YOUR NAME CLEARLY MARKED IN THE SUBJECT LINE. PLEASE NOTE, WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT VERIFICATION LETTERS VIA EMAIL, EVERYTHING ELSE SHOULD BE PROVIDED USING THE ONLINE ENTRY FORM.

UPDATE: With the Covid-19 crisis evolving rapidly, the problem of international travel and quarantine issues are likely to persist for some time, and progress at different rates in different parts of the world. Should UK restrictions be relaxed by late November, the Foreign Press Association will go ahead with its annual awards ceremony and dinner. However, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to invite competition finalists to London to attend the awards night.
