Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2022 for Journalists worldwide

Thomson Foundation is offering six rising stars the chance to connect with six of the best journalists in the industry as part of the prestigious Young Journalist Award 2022.

This year’s award will be extra special for another reason, too. It will be the first time in two years that the three finalists will be able to attend the glittering ceremony in London in person. The pandemic of the past two years has meant finalists could only attend virtually.

  • To mark six decades of the foundation, the three finalists as well as the next three highest in the shortlist will have the opportunity to be mentored for six months by six established journalists from the alumni.

Requirements

  • Now in its 10th year, the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) is open to journalists aged 30 or under from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than $20,000.
  • Those who meet the criteria are welcome to submit a portfolio of three published pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding the deadline for submissions, which is 12 August, 2022.
  • They can be in any medium — print, audio, video or multimedia.

Benefits

  • The three Young Journalist Award finalists will automatically qualify for the mentorship programme.
  • The additional three will be selected from the shortlist of 12 to join them as part of our ongoing investment into ethical, independent and trusted journalism.
  • If you are one of the selected six, you’ll be provided with a unique package of support and paired with an established journalist matched to your region from the extensive alumni network.
  • You’ll learn from them how their exclusives and investigations have changed the world, and how yours can too. 
  • In addition, all 12 journalists in the shortlist will be given space on the Thomson Foundation website and social media channels and receive a certificate from Thomson Foundation commending them on the high standard of their work.

  • Deadline for entries: 12 August 2022
  • Entries must be submitted by 23:59 UK time on the night of deadline day

Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2021 for Journalists worldwide (£1,000 learning bursaries)

The Young Journalist Award – in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association – is Thomson Foundation’s annual journalism competition dedicated to finding and inspiring ambitious journalists from across the globe. 

Now in its ninth year, the award enables journalists aged 30 and under, from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than $20,000, to send in their best stories.

Judges of the award look for stories that are revelatory, prompt public debate and have led to, or have the potential to lead to, positive change in society.

In the year of COP26, the pivotal UN climate change conference, it is fitting that we should introduce an environmental component to our 2021 Young Journalist Award. Applicants will still be required to submit a portfolio of three stories and these can be a mixture of investigative pieces and human-interest stories. However, we will be asking all entrants to ensure at least ONE of the three pieces submitted has an environmental focus.

Application Requirements

Applicants will still be required to submit a portfolio of three stories in any medium (print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four) and these can be a mixture of investigative pieces and human-interest stories. However, we will be asking all entrants to ensure at least ONE of the three pieces submitted has an environmental reporting element.

For clarity, environmental reporting is covering stories about the interaction of people and the natural world and the issues related to that interaction. Environmental stories should be focused on one or more of the subjects covered by environmental reporting: sustainability, pollution, nature/biodiversity and/or climate change.

Our free online courses in environmental journalism are available to help journalists investigate local stories and understand the environmental drivers behind them.

The portfolio of work submitted for the Young Journalist Award must be in the 12 months preceding the competition closing date, which is September 10th, 2021.

Benefits

  • Three finalists will be chosen by an independent judging panel selected by the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA) and an overall Young Journalist Award winner will be revealed on the night of the FPA Awards on Monday 29th November, 2021.
  • All three finalists will be awarded £1,000 learning bursaries or funds to buy equipment.

The Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award – in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association – is Thomson Foundation’s annual journalism competition dedicated to finding and inspiring ambitious journalists from across the globe. 

Now in its eighth year, the award enables journalists aged 30 and under, from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of less than $20,000, to send in their best stories.

Judges of the award look for stories that are revelatory, prompt public debate and have led to, or have the potential to lead to, positive change in society

PORTFOLIO:

  • Each entrant should submit a portfolio of THREE published or broadcast pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding 14th August, 2020 (the 12 months prior to the deadline for submissions).
  • The entries can be in any format: print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four.
  • Applicants can provide URL links to their stories online. If necessary, they can use a file-transfer application such as Google Drive for scans or PDFs of print articles, and for large audio or video files.
  • A written statement of no more than 200 words per story giving a summary of the content and any impact it had on public debate in the country of publication or broadcast, should also be submitted.

LANGUAGE:

  • Entries can be in any language but should be accompanied by a verbatim English-language translation.

VERIFICATION:

  • Entries should be accompanied by a letter from the applicant’s current editor, on headed company notepaper verifying that it is the published work of the entrant. Where an entrant is freelance, or self-employed, verification can be provided by an editor from one of the publications/websites/broadcasters where the work appeared, or by a journalism academic familiar with the work of the entrant.

*A VERIFICATION LETTER MUST BE SUPPLIED WITH YOUR SUBMISSION. THIS CAN BE SHARED WITH US VIA A LINK TO DROPBOX, GOOGLE DRIVE OR SIMILAR. ALTERNATIVELY, PLEASE SEND BY EMAIL TO [email protected] WITH YOUR NAME CLEARLY MARKED IN THE SUBJECT LINE. PLEASE NOTE, WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT VERIFICATION LETTERS VIA EMAIL, EVERYTHING ELSE SHOULD BE PROVIDED USING THE ONLINE ENTRY FORM.


UPDATE: With the Covid-19 crisis evolving rapidly, the problem of international travel and quarantine issues are likely to persist for some time, and progress at different rates in different parts of the world. Should UK restrictions be relaxed by late November, the Foreign Press Association will go ahead with its annual awards ceremony and dinner. However, we cannot  guarantee that we will be able to invite competition finalists to London to attend the awards night.

The 2019 Young Journalist Award is open! Now in its seventh year, the award – in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association – is Thomson Foundation’s annual journalism competition dedicated to finding and inspiring ambitious journalists from across the globe. 

Concern over the growing threat to the safety of journalists is at the heart of an international campaign to defend media freedom.

Led by the UK and Canadian governments, the aim is to shine a global spotlight on free media and increase the cost to those that are attempting to restrict it. The campaign culminates in the Global Conference for Media Freedom in London on 10th and 11th July, 2019, which brings together global leaders and representatives from the media industry, journalists, civil society and academia. 

The conference, which Thomson Foundation is attending, is timely as we launch our prestigious Young Journalist Award and highlight the work of three former winners – from Sudan, Syria and Russia – who, by their courage and determination, work tirelessly to root out the truth and hold the powerful to account.

Requirements:

Journalists working in the developing world are invited to succeed Russian investigative reporter, Alisa Kustikova, as the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award winner.

If you are a journalist aged 30 and under working in a country with a Gross National Income (GNI) of less than $20,000, you are eligible to enter the award.

Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2018 for Journalists worldwide (Fully Funded to London)

Young reporters from across the world are invited to submit their work to the Thomson Foundation to enter the competition for the sixth ‘Young Journalist’ Award.   

Part of the UK Foreign Press Association Awards (FPA), the award enables journalists aged 30 and under, from countries with a Gross National Income (GNI)  per capita of less than $20,000, to send in their best stories.

Their work is then scrutinised by a judging panel at Thomson Foundation and then by independent FPA judges.

Requirements:

  • The award attracts entries from young journalists in Africa, the Indian sub-continent, South America, Central America, parts of Central Asia and some countries in the Middle East.
  • Each entrant needs to submit a portfolio of three published pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding the deadline for submissions which is August 17th, 2018. They can be in any format – print, audio, video, multimedia or a combination of all four.
  • AGE: Entrants must be 30 years of age or under on 26th November, 2018.
  • LOCATION: For the purpose of this competition the “developing world” is defined as countries with a Gross National Income (GNI) of $20,000 or less. Entrants should be from a country that meets the GNI criteria and reporting from/in that country or, if not in their country of origination, in another country fitting the same GNI criteria.
  • PORTFOLIO: Each entrant should submit a portfolio of THREE published or broadcast pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding 17th August, 2018 (the 12 months prior to the deadline for submissions). The entries can be in any format: print, audio, video, multimedia, or a combination of all four. Applicants can email their articles as attachments or provide links to their stories online. If necessary, they can use a file-transfer application such as WeTransfer for large audio or video files. A written statement of no more than 200 words per story giving a summary of the content and any impact it had on public debate in the country of publication or broadcast, should also be submitted.
  • LANGUAGE: Entries can be in any language but should be accompanied by a verbatim English-language translation.
  • COLLABORATION: Entrants should provide an explanation of any collaboration undertaken with colleagues or external organisations on the stories that they have submitted.
  • PLAGIARISM: Checks will be made for plagiarism and any entrant found to have submitted work which is not their own will be automatically disqualified.

Benefits:

  • The three finalists will be flown to London, spend a few nights in the city and attend the gala award night at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel on November 26th, 2018, along with a host of other potential award winners and leading figures from the world of journalism.

Thomson Foundation, in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA), is inviting young journalists from around the world to submit their most compelling stories.

Now leading into its fifth year, the Young Journalist Award is Thomson Foundation’s annual journalism competition, dedicated to finding and inspiring ambitious and emerging journalistic talent from across the globe.

Previous winners have each possessed the most important traits necessary to be successful in journalism: a unique voice, a fresh perspective and a strong passion not only for their subjects, but also for their craft.

Requirements:

  • The competition is open to journalists aged 30 or under from countries with a gross national income per capita of less than $20,000.
  • Those who meet the criteria are welcome to submit a portfolio of three published pieces of work produced in the 12 months preceding the deadline for submissions, which is Friday 18 August, 2017.
  • They can be in any format — print, audio, video, multimedia or a combination of all four.

Benefits:

  • While only three finalists can make it to London to attend the prestigious gala awards night in November, along with a host of other potential award winners and leading figures from the world of journalism, there is space to salute the longer shortlist of 12 on the Thomson Foundation website and social media channels.

Selection:

  • An esteemed panel from the foundation — all highly experienced journalists within their own right — will tackle the substantial, scouring through hundreds of entries from young journalists from across the globe which, in previous years, have included Africa, the Indian subcontinent, China, South America, parts of Central Asia and the Middle East, for stories that are revelatory, prompt public debate and have led to, or have the potential to lead to, positive change in society.
