The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has launched a new competition to identify the best ideas that will help rural communities recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Global Rural Tourism Startup Competition will also support the entrepreneurs and enterprises that can help rural communities seize the economic and social opportunities that will come as tourism restarts.

The United Nations specialized agency has recorded rising interest in unique and authentic travel experiences, including in nature-based and outdoors tourism. With this trend expected to accelerate as tourism restarts, the Startup Competition is looking for those ideas that will help ensure rural communities are best-placed to benefit. The competition will also look for ideas that will help build resilience in rural communities.

The Competition aims to support rural tourism as a key tool to fight depopulation, promote inclusion and reduce regional inequalities in income and development as part of UNWTO’s special focus on tourism for rural development.

Applications are now open for four categories:

  • People –Leaving no one behind: Projects that incentivize the creation of jobs and opportunities, promote gender and youth empowerment, and build opportunities for vulnerable groups in rural areas.
  • Planet – Building back better Projects related to the promotion and protection of natural resources, including addressing tourism’s impact on climate change, we as well as waste and resource consumption.
  • Prosperity- opportunities for growth Startups that provide innovative solutions through new business models, instruments that promote access to finance, markets and marketing for tourism in rural areas.
  • Propulsion of Rural Tech – Implementation of new technologies to advance tourism and development in rural areas.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in collaboration with the Basque Culinary Center, presents the First Global Gastronomy Tourism Startup Competition.
Mission

Identify challenges and projects, and catalyzing innovations that can transform the Gastronomy Tourism sector in the near future.

Gastronomy tourism stimulates entrepreneurship and the generation of new companies and organizations that necessarily affect other industries transversally and fosters values such as:

  • Sustainability based on maintaining a balance between economic growth and gastronomic culture and heritage
  • The quality of initiatives from production to experience, along the entire tourism value chain
  • Authentic communication and a coherent narrative of gastronomic offerings with the participation of all the stakeholders of the sector; from chefs to the media
  • Cooperation among all actors throughout the entire value chain of the gastronomic and tourism sector
  • Authenticity by highlighting cultural heritage, local products and cultural values

Eligibility Requirements:

startups with most disruptive ideas focused on solving real needs in the tourism and gastronomy sector with a responsible approach.

In particular, we are targeting startups that are:

  • In the Early Stage or Series A Stage
  • Both for-profit and non-profit
  • Natural or legal persons
  • Startups with a minimum viable product (MVP)
  • Startups with potential for scalability
  • Startups with a sustainable vision

20 selected Start-ups will be shortlisted by a panel of international experts and stakeholders from the gastronomy tourism sector (public and private sector, academia, and civil society)

Validate and test

The 5 finalist startups will have a sponsored trip to pitch their idea to a panel of experts, governments, industry leaders and international investors who will attend the 5th edition of the World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism be held in Spain on 2-3 May 2019.

Pitch and connect

The winning company will have the possibility to make its mark on the international stage and increase the impact of its startup with the help of BCC experts with a customized mentoring programme and the possibility of participating in the business accelerator Culinary Action!

Accelerate and incubate

The winning company will have the opportunity to design a pilot project with the Basque Culinary Center and implement it with the help of its network.

Evaluation Criteria:

The projects must be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations and the introduction or adaptation of digital and technological elements, and focused on one (or several) of the following areas:

  1. Destination management or private management of solutions/products/services developed around gastronomy as gastronomic tourism products
  2. Supply-side configuration seeking balance between sustainable development and the profitability of the project, maximizing the positive impacts on the community.
  3. Connection with the market and the user experience in all phases of the trip.
  4. The integration of sustainability in the project´s business plan, specifically the conservation of local ingredients and the relationship between culture, heritage, gastronomy, tourism and economic growth

2015 United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) PhD Researcher Programme, Madrid Spain (Fully Funded)

DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME: The selected candidates will be offered a twelve months sponsorship.
LUMP SUM: A monthly lump sum of EUR 2,000 per month, to be paid at the end of each month.
DATE OF ENTRY ON DUTY: 1st August or 1st September 2015

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the
promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
In 2015, UNWTO will continue the PhD Research Programme, successfully started in 2014, which
will offer again two PhD students the opportunity to contribute to the UNWTO programme for Sustainable Development of Tourism (SDT).
The main aim of this programme is to support research to advance the general knowledge and further broaden ones’ understanding about the importance of sustainable and resilient tourism at the international level
Programme Details:
  • The PhD Research Programme will be located in Madrid, Spain, at UNWTO headquarters, working with the SDT Programme.
  • Successful candidates will be sponsored for a period of 12 months and are expected to work under the supervision of the Director of the SDT programme and/or another staff member in the programme.
  • Appropriate logistics (i.e., first-hand access to meetings and UN processes; internal access to all UNWTO documents and database and other relevant industry data and processes; own office space, computer and internet accessibility) will be made available.
ELIGIBILITY & CONDITIONS:
The researchers should possess the following knowledge and skills :
  • Applicants must be enrolled in doctoral studies and be external collaborative PhD students, but should not be in their final year of study.
  • The lump sum should be used to finance the one year stay abroad in Madrid and should not be used for tuition or other fees related to the PhD degree.
  • The successful candidate must have excellent written and spoken English.
  • Applicants must be computer literate in Windows 7, Microsoft Office 2010 software,Internet and emerging Web tools,and should be able to operate standard office equipment (e.g. scanner, photocopier, etc.); experience with data management software is an asset; have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Applicants must have academic background in international affairs, sustainable development, international and/or development economics, aviation and transportation management, environmental affairs or related fields.
  • The successful PhD candidate shall conduct himself/herself at all times in a manner befitting his/her status as a holder of a UNWTO research grant. Any serious infringement
    of this general rule may lead, after consultation with the authorities concerned, to the
    termination of the research.
  • Applicants must possess a medical certificate indicating that he/she is in good health and able to undertake the research programme.
  • The researcher shall be in possession of a major global medical insurance coverage to be paid by him/her.
  • The UNWTO is not in any way committed to employ the researcher upon completion of
    UNWTO research.
  • The researcher shall be responsible for all matters pertaining to his/her stay in Madrid.
    PROPOSAL EVALUATION:
    PhD research applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
  • Linkages between original PhD study and UNWTO research subjects
  • Scientific benefit of the PhD research project for UNWTO, conferences and official
    publications
  • Completeness of application
  • Fulfillment of general conditions
