The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) is thrilled to announce that journalists may submit their entries for the 18th edition of the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting (WSAIR) from Wednesday 4 October to Tuesday 24 October 2023 by 4pm. The award welcomes entries from Nigerian reporters, individuals or teams and full-time or freelancers, who have published stories in the Nigerian news media directly mainly at the Nigerian audience. 

This year, Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) will continue its tradition of recognising exceptional journalism across print, online, photojournalism, editorial cartooning, television and radio genres that investigates public and corporate corruption, exposes human rights violations, and highlights regulatory abuses in Nigeria. The stories must be newsworthy, investigative, expose or prevent clandestine activities and corruption in the public and private domain and promote human rights.

ELIGIBILITY

The award is open to any Nigerian professional reporter or team of reporters (fulltime or freelancers), 18-years and above, who have published stories either online, in print, or through electronic media, primarily targeted at and received by a Nigerian audience.

CRITERIA

The main criterion for eligibility is that the work (single work or single-subject serial) must involve reporting on public, and or corporate corruption, human rights violation, or on the failure of regulatory agencies. The story should reflect a high quality of investigation in terms of newsworthiness, capacity to expose or prevent clandestine activities, corruption in the public domain, an understanding of human rights implications enhanced by the quality of presentation. Such works should have been first published or broadcast in a Nigerian media between 4th October 2022 and 3rd October 2023.

2020 Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting for Nigerian Journalists

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) rewards, promotes and encourages best practices in journalism works from the print, radio, television, photo, online, editorial cartoon broad categories as well as from other special categories which focus on themes ranging from regulatory failures, corruption in the public and corporate spheres, and human rights abuses in the country.

The Award was instituted and first held in October 2005 to aid the development of an investigative reporting culture in the Nigerian media. In naming the award after Wole Soyinka, the initiators hoped to bring further attention to Soyinka’s untiring and relentless support for the cause of freedom of expression.

Requirements

  • Annually, nominations open in October and close in November for the award presentation ceremony usually held on 9 December – the World Anti-corruption Day.
  • Judges are selected from a pool of veteran investigative journalists, media professionals and academics for the award programme which has so far rewarded produced 91 finalists, 8 investigative journalists of the year and 20 honorary awards recipients for their outstanding works.
  • The award win includes a cash prize, an award plaque, a certificate of commendation, a computer backup hard drive and an international study tour.
  • Apart from the investigative reporting category, the award also has two honorary awards— the Lifetime Award for Journalistic Excellence and the Anti-corruption Defender Award, to honour the great past of the media profession, and to recognise individuals or organisations for their noteworthy stance against corruption respectively.

2019 Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting for Nigerian journalists

Application Deadline: Thursday, 24 October 2019 by 4pm.

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) invites entries from Nigerian professional journalists or team of journalists, full-time or part-time, for the 14th edition of the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting. The centre has introduced online application option for some categories of the award for this edition.

The award, which is an annual programme of WSCIJ, seeks to honour journalism works with focus on public and or corporate corruption, human rights abuses, or failure of regulatory agencies, published or aired between 4th October 2018 and 3rd October 2019.

This year, applicants for the Television, Radio and Online categories of the award can put in their entries through an online application process. The other three categories requiring hard copy submission given the nature of entry processing, are the Print, Photography and Editorial cartoon.

Received entries will be collated using the award coding system and assessed by a panel of media experts and related professionals with good understanding of investigative reporting. The judges’ board would broadly score submitted stories based on quality of investigation, evidence, human rights elements, ethical reportage, courage, individual creativity, public interest, impact and quality of presentation.

Application Procedure:

The deadline for the submission of entries is Thursday, 24 October 2019 by 4pm.

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) 2019 Masterclass on Migration Reporting

The Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ) invites Nigerian professional investigative reporters (full-time or freelance) from the print, online and broadcast specialties to apply for a two-day masterclass on migration reporting in line with the organisation’s Media Engagement on Migration Reporting programme supported by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Media Engagement on Migration Reporting is aimed at ensuring that the most vulnerable people, particularly the youths, have access to relevant information and knowledge of the dangers and the benefits of migration. The emersion training is geared at building the capacities of journalists to investigate and better report migration issues in West Africa and to Europe.

Tentative training date: 29-30 August 2019

  • Applicants must have relevant works proving their dexterity at investigative reporting in the beat under focus or other ones.
