2016 Leymah Gbowee Foundation Scholarships for Africans to study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

The University of Dundee in partnership with Leymah Gbowee Foundation offers one African female student, from Liberia, Nigeria or Ghana, the opportunity to undertake a 1 year Masters degree at the University of Dundee fully sponsored for both tuition fees and living expenses up to a total of £20,000.

Leymah Gbowee was a single mother of four, living in the war-ravaged nation of Liberia, struggling to feed her children and living in constant fear of brutal death at the hands of the country’s warring factions. One day she decided she had had enough of this way of life, and set out to end the 14-year conflict that had devastated her nation and destroyed the lives and dreams of its people.

She now works promoting the education of women in Africa which she believes is a key strategy for the transformation of the continent and its leadership.

Eligibility Requirements:

Criteria for awarding the scholarship is as follows:

  • The applicant must be a Liberian, Nigerian, Ghanaian country national citizen
  • The applicant must be permanently resident in Liberia, Nigeria or Ghana at the time of application
  • The applicant must be female
  • Applicants will be selected on the basis of their merit and potential evidenced by their personal statement.

The awards will be given to students who are undertaking a one year taught masters programme at the University of Dundee, in the academic year 2015-16 (January 2016 entry).

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Dundee and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

  2. To complete the application process you must complete the form and submit all relevant documentation and return by email to Gillian Sharp at the University of Dundee [email protected]
  3. Please type Leymah Gbowee Scholarship in the subject area of the email.

(Applicants will also be required to provide proof of their African citizenship and permanent residence.)

Scholarships available to attend 2015 Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS), Edinburg Scotland

  • Modernism: 6th – 18th July 2015
  • Scottish Literature: 20th July – 1st August 2015
  • Contemporary Literature: 3rd – 15th August 2015

  • Contemporary Theatre and Performance: 3rd – 15th August 2015

The Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) was founded as a non-profit organisation by Professor David Daiches in 1947. In the spirit of the Edinburgh International Festival, SUISS brings together students and academics who, irrespective of their national, religious, or cultural difference, share a love of literature.

SUISS is affiliated with seven prestigious Scottish universities:

The University of Aberdeen

The University of Dundee

The University of Edinburgh

The University of Glasgow

The Open University in Scotland

The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow

The University of St Andrews

Each summer, SUISS offers an intense, challenging and diverse programme of study that takes place in July and August in Edinburgh, the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. We offer three courses in Text and Context: British and Irish Literature from 1900 to the Present, one course in Creative Writing, and one course in Contemporary British and Irish Theatre and Performance.

The literature courses offer extensive examination of Modernism, Scottish Literature and Contemporary Literature, while our Creative Writing course allows students to develop their personal writing portfolios.

SUISS is based at The University of Edinburgh, which offers our students excellent educational and accommodation facilities, the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful environment of the capital city, and to explore the cultural and historical sites across Scotland.

Eligibility

The course at SUISS are extensive, flexible, and attract students of a high calibre. SUISS has much to offer students of various levels of academic experience, particularly those who have at least two years of undergraduate university education

Scholarships

Scholarships are available for applicants who are from specific countries, who specialize in certain subjects, or for exceptional literature students who would be unable to attend SUISS without financial assistance.

To be eligible for scholarships, applications must be received no later than Friday, 20th March 2015.
