Call for Applications: USAID North East Intellectual Entrepreneurship Fellowship 2017

North East Regional Initiative and the USAID Office of Transition Initiatives (NERI/USAIDOTI) welcomes applications for its North East Intellectual Entrepreneurship Fellowship (NEIEF) Program.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has contracted Creative Associates International to implement the North East Regional Initiative (NERI), a four year project based in Abuja and operating in north east Nigeria. Under NERI, Creative Associates works with civil society groups, communities, and Nigerian government stakeholders to deliver short term assistance by awarding small grants to local and international partners working in northeast Nigeria.

Activities developed in concert with local stakeholders, will improve stability in northeastern Nigeria by increasing positive engagement between civil society, communities, and the Government of Nigeria, developing and increasing access to sources of credible information, and supporting vulnerable youth.

Entitlements

Each selected participants will receive a monthly stipend, a laptop and an e-reader uploaded with books and training/support materials. Outstanding Fellows May Be sponsored to participate in the Istanbul Network for Liberty Annual Conference or the Oslo Freedom Forum Conference.

Thematic Focus for this Fellowship Round:

Applicants are free to focus on one of the following themes during their fellowship period:

Countering violent Extremism in the North East
Providing Religious Tolerance in the  North East
Promoting Support for Gender and Social Inclusion in the North East.
Promoting Dialogue and Reintegration in the  North East

Eligibility

Applicants must be between 25 and 40 years of age ( up to 45 years for Women)
Applicants must be a citizen of NIGERIA (with Adamawa, Borno and Yobe as catchment states)
Applicants must have a background in community work, volunteerism and Policy engagement.
Applicants must be active in at least 3 Social Media Platforms for up to a year (Preference will be given to those active in more platforms over a longer period)
Applicants must posses a Bachelor’s degree and have experience in policy-oriented activities.
Applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English

2015 USAID Power Africa Photo Contest (Winning Photos to be used in USAID and Power Africa Publications.

Power Africa — an initiative to increase the number of people with access to power in sub-Saharan Africa. To help shed light and their perspective on the role Power Africa and energy innovation are playing to increase access to power in Africa. Power Africa is aking its partners, colleagues, and implementers to show the world the faces, places, and moments that epitomize Power Africa.

  • Send in your best photos for a chance to be featured in Power Africa’s exhibition space at one of the world’s leading energy conference for the African Energy Forum as well as to commemorate the opening of Power Africa’s headquarter offices in Pretoria, South Africa.
  • Winning photos will also be used in Power Africa and USAID publications, events, conferences, and exhibits.
  • All submitted photos will be featured on Power Africa social media, websites and literature and/or other Power Africa partners’ discretion (photographs will be credited where appropriate).

Submission:

To submit a photo, please email [email protected] with the required information and the attached photo(s).

Submitted photos should serve to answer one of the following questions:

  • Impact What does energy and energy innovation look like in practice?
  • Change How does access to electricity change a human life or an ecosystem (government, community, organization)?
  • New Model How is Power Africa’s approach different?
  • Partnership What does energy look like when we work together in partnership through Power Africa?

Submission Requirements

This contest is open to everyone. Employees of the US Government, its partners and contractors may also participate.

Photos must:

  • Be high-resolution, high quality photos that are at least 1024 pixels or larger (tall or wide) or around 300 pixels per inch or 120 pixels per centimeter. Please send us the highest resolution version of the photo you have (at least 1 MB). If you are using Photoshop, please send only level 7 or higher compressed photos.
  • Be high quality JPG and JPEG
  • Be an original submission (submitted by photographer or with permission) and not previously submitted to a USAID photo contest. Submissions with a logo or time stamp visible on top of the photo will not be accepted.
  • Include a credit: name of photographer and organizational affiliation (if applicable)
  • Include a unique, robust caption (in English), which includes a description of what is going on in the photo, who is involved, where it was taken, and how it is a part of or relates to Power Africa.
  • Seek to answer one of the above questions and “tell the story” of Power Africa and its accomplishments by accentuating depth, directing the viewers toward our subjects and hinting at the larger story of their lives and details help tell the story of the environments that our partners and beneficiaries live in.

Timeline

  • March 20 – April 17: Submissions: Photos may be submitted.
  • April 20 – April 24: Internal Vetting: By April 24, a selection of finalists will be selected by the Power Africa Communication team. Photos will be selected based on:
    • Photo Quality
    • Relevance to Power Africa themes above (e.g. Impact, Change, New Model, and/or Partnership)
    • Creativity
    • Ability to answer the photo prompt
  • April 24 – April 30: Judging: Power Africa partners will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite photo.
  • Announcement of Winners: On May 1st, eight winners will be announced

African Diaspora Marketplace Business Plan Competition 2015 ($USD 50,000 Grant for Successful Applicants)

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Western Union have launched the third round of the African Diaspora Marketplace business plan competition (ADM III).

Established in 2009 by USAID and Western Union, the African Diaspora Marketplace (ADM) promotes sustainable economic growth and job creation in Africa by supporting entrepreneurs with demonstrable connections to or experience in Africa, who have innovative and high impact start-ups or established businesses on the continent. Since its launch, ADM has held three rigorous business plan competitions to identify and provide support to the most promising entrepreneurs.

ADM aims to support the development of the entrepreneurship ecosystem by providing a platform to connect lenders and investors with entrepreneurs across the continent; ADM partners have held two SME banking forums and an SME investor pitch event, as well as related training and webinars to help entrepreneurs across Africa successfully access external financing.

Benefits:

  • Successful ADM III applicants will receive a matching grant of up to $50,000 and will have access to technical assistance and other support services.
  • The ADM team also provides industry, trade and technology information to support business growth and innovation.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • ADM III is open to all US citizens or permanent residents who are members of the African diaspora community and others who have a demonstrated relevant connection to, or experience in, Africa.
  • African Diaspora consists of people of African origin. African origin includes people of African descent, not only first generation immigrants.

Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cote D’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia

ADM will not consider applications from or in partnership with:

  • Not-for-profit organizations, government institutions (national, regional or local).
  • Employees, contractors, or family members of any participating sponsors (USAID, Western Union, Homestrings, the Small Enterprise Assistance Funds, The Arthur Group, Deloitte, George Washington University or the Minority Business Development Agency).
  • ADM I or II Awardees, ADM judges, TA providers, or consultants.
  • Entities listed in “Parties Excluded from Federal Procurement or Non-procurement Programs.“

The Global Innovation Fund invests in social innovations that aim to improve the lives and opportunities of millions of people in the developing world. Through  grants and risk capital, GIF support breakthrough solutions to global development challenges from social enterprises, for-profit firms, non-profit organisations, researchers, and government agencie

The Global Innovation Fund was launched on September 23, 2014 in New York City at the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. At a standing room-only event, GIF’s five financial partners announced a total funding commitment of more than $200 million.

The partners include: The Department of International Development in the UK (DFID), The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Omidyar Network, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia (DFAT).

Global Innovation Fund

Funding:

  • The Global Innovation Fund offers grants, loans (including convertible debt), and equity investments ranging from GB £30,000 to £10 million. Applicants are asked to indicate their preferred capital type and amount on their application.
  • For-profit institutions requesting grants must give compelling rationale on why they are requesting grants rather than risk capital such as equity or debt, such as why the innovation can be considered as a public good that benefits society.
  • For GIF’s largest commercial investments, equity will only be offered on comparable terms with other investors (on a ‘pari passu’ basis).
