United Nations Volunteers Call for young researchers for local peacebuilding.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme, UN Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO) and PeaceNexus Foundation are pleased to launch a call for young researchers for peacebuilding. This new partnership will provide early-career professionals with the opportunity to support PBSO’s research agenda as national UN Volunteers, while gaining insights and skills relevant to peacebuilding globally. The initIative is a testimony to the three partners’ commitment to support the next generation of peacebuilding professionals.

The five young researchers will be deployed as national specialist UN Volunteers across four case study locations – Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Kyrgyzstan and the Western Balkans, with deployments in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo (as per UN SCR 1244). Their work will contribute to a global Thematic Review on Local Peacebuilding commissioned by PBSO, with support from the PeaceNexus Foundation and UNV. This review aims to better understand good practices, as well as results and lessons learned from projects funded by the UN Peacebuilding Fund focused on local community-based peacebuilding initiatives.

Guided by a senior team leader, young and emerging evaluators will conduct in-country data collection and analysis activities (such as local community consultations and stakeholder interviews), validate findings with communities, and contribute to the drafting of the report.

Alongside their day-to-day experiences, the young researchers will have access to mentoring from PBSO and the PeaceNexus Foundation experts, as well as a suite of online learning tools and resources from UNV. The estimated assignment duration is three-four months, from June to September 2021.

How to apply

If you are an early-career professional, with a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant work experience at the national level in monitoring, evaluation, reporting or research, we encourage you to apply. Experience with local peacebuilding efforts is an advantage.

Candidates must be nationals or residence permit holders of these countries.

Internship UN Youth Volunteer Programme

Assisting with organization of workshops, communications and outreach activities

Duration: 3–6 months at UNV headquarters in Bonn, Germany.

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. UNV is headquartered in Bonn, Germany and has approximately 150 staff positions–with the majority in Bonn and some positions with different UN peacekeeping and political missions, and in other Headquarters locations (e.g. New York and Tokyo).

The programme includes a specific modality for youth volunteerism, which aims to meet the needs of young volunteers whilst harnessing their skills and experience. It also aims to foster partnerships with a broad range of youth-led, volunteer involving, and civil society organizations, governments and other

UN agencies in order to discover new opportunities for youth volunteerism and exchange best practices. Finally it seeks to strengthen national and regi

onal capacities including policy and legislative frameworksfor governments, civil society and other partners to develop and sustain youth volunteer schemes.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

Education: Completed undergraduate degree (Bachelor) and current enrollment in a Master’s degree or equivalent. Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible;

Field of study: Development-related fields such as economics, international relations, anthropology, sociology, public or business administration, or environmental studies. Other fields of study may be considered depending on the type of assignment;

Language skills: Written and spoken proficiency in English and preferably in an additional official UN Language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese);

Demonstrated interest in the field of development and the work of international organisations.

Previous experience in:-organization of workshops/ events-partnership building and stakeholder consultations-and/ or communications and campaign management-and/or research and policy development as well as experience in developing countries is desirable.

Knowledge of the UN work environment an advantage.

Enthusiastic about the role of youth volunteerism and participation in peace and development and ready to learn.

Experience in non–formal education an asset.

Good oral and written communications skills and demonstrated research abilities and interest

Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. Experience with the development of statistics, charts in Excel and Web 2.0 tools (especially social networking) an asset.

Experience in volunteering a strong asset.

The Internship Programme operates on a non-remunerative basis. Costs and arrangements for travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNV but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.

UNV accepts no responsibility for the intern’s medical insurance or for costs arising from illness during the internship. Interns are required to provide proof of medical insurance coverage.

The United Nations Online Volunteering Award 2013,

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is calling for nominations for the UNV Online Volunteering Award 2013, which will be presented to ten online volunteers or teams of online volunteers for their contributions to peace and development projects and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

A jury made up of UNV representatives and external experts in volunteerism and development cooperation will review the nominations and select the 10 winners.

In the run up to International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December, the global public will be invited to vote for their favorite winner. The volunteer or team that gets the most votes will be announced as the public’s favorite on IVD.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The award will be given to ONLINE VOLUNTEERS or TEAMS OF ONLINE VOLUNTEERS, who supported an organization working for peace and development over the Internet. The online collaboration must date back less than two years and must have been facilitated through the UNV Online Volunteering service.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The jury will review the nominations and select the 10 winners based on the following criteria:

* Online volunteers’ commitment and contribution
* Collaboration between the volunteers and the organization
* Result of the collaboration and impact on the organization’s activities

PURPOSE

The purpose of the award is to recognize online volunteers’ contributions towards achieving the MDGs, to showcase the many ways in which online volunteers can strengthen the capacities of organizations and to demonstrate the difference volunteers can make to peace and development projects by sharing their time, skills and expertise over the Internet.

The UNV Online Volunteering Award presents an opportunity for both, online volunteers and organizations, to bring their online volunteering experiences and good practices to the attention of a global audience.

Your experience may inspire others and thus help mobilize more volunteers to engage in peace and development activities over the Internet, or encourage more organizations to strengthen their efforts by tapping into the rich resource that online volunteers provide. Also, by submitting your nomination, you express your appreciation to your volunteers or fellow online volunteers for a successful online collaboration.

NOMINATION

Please complete the nomination form below and submit your nomination by email to [email protected] NO LATER THAN 12 AUGUST 2013. Nominations can be submitted by organizations or by volunteers. Organizations may nominate their volunteers, and volunteers who worked on an assignment together with other volunteers may nominate their team. Nominations can be submitted in English, French or Spanish.

The winners will be announced in the run up to International Volunteer Day, 5 December 2013.
