UNDP Future Policy Award 2019 on Empowering Youth

Global contest announced by the World Future Council, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), with the support of the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Youth Policy Labs.

On the eve of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum and the 140th IPU Assembly, the World Future Council, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with the support of the Office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Youth Policy Labs, have kicked off a global call for nominations to identify and honour the world’s most successful policies enabling youth empowerment.

Every year, the most visionary policies tackling humankind’s most pressing challenges are celebrated through the Future Policy Award (FPA), the only global award that recognises policies for the benefit of present and future generations. The World Future Council has awarded this annual prize since 2010 in partnership with UN agencies and the IPU. Recognising that youth empowerment is critical to achieve the Agenda 2030 and address key sustainable development and justice challenges, the Future Policy Award 2019 will put the spotlight on policies that empower young people through decent and sustainable jobs as well as civic and political participation for sustainable development and peace.

Application Procedure:

Representatives of international organizations, academia,non-governmental organizations, parliaments, government agencies, and others have until the 26th April to nominate exemplary policies through the online form (available in English, at http://bit.do/eNoZb) or with a word version of the form (available on request, in English, French and Spanish, at: [email protected]).

Winners will be selected by a high-level jury of experts and announced in October 2019 at an award ceremony in Belgrade, Serbia, during the 141st IPU Assembly

UNDP Waste Recovery Innovation Challenge (WRIC) 2019

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) wishes to announce a call for concept notes from the private sector for the 1st edition of its ‘Waste’ Recovery Innovation Challenge (WRIC).

The Challenge aims to provide technical and financial support (max. $40,000 each) to business ideas that will promote and/or test innovative solutions for the recovery of waste materials and their transformation into other essential products/services. 

The business should be innovative; have a good management structure; have the possibility of making profit in the short, medium and long term; create employment and other income generation opportunities especially for women and youth; and should lead to/contribute to bringing a lasting solution to a waste management challenge in a specific area/community or region.

As a first step in the competition process, we are requesting interested entrepreneurs to submit a Concept Note to [email protected] by 1 March 2019, 5pm GMT. All concept notes should be developed and submitted using the ‘WRIC CONCEPT NOTE APPLICATION FORM’ template. See further background information and guidelines in the ‘CALL FOR CONCEPT NOTE DOCUMENT.

This call for concept notes only applies to the private sector for business related projects. A separate call for proposal for projects related to research and advocacy/awareness creation will be launched separately.

The WRIC is under the ‘Waste’ Recovery Platform, which aims to connect key stakeholders along the waste management value chain with data and technological solutions for waste recovery. This is expected to:

  • facilitate more cost-effective and transparent access to ready data for evidenced-based planning on waste and sanitation management;
  • enhance access to knowledge on best available technologies on waste recovery;
  • make it easier to find/link solution providers and off-takers;
  • stimulate research and innovation on waste recovery;
  • create an online market place for waste resource exchange; and
  • build capacity of key personnel (local government, private sector, NGOs and Academia) to enhance waste and sanitation management particularly at the decentralized level.

The Platform and its features are currently being co-designed by 5 multi-stakeholder technical working groups facilitated by UNDP.

SEED with the generous support of the Government of Flanders is pleased to invite nominations for the BDS+ Training of Trainers (ToT) programme on Social & Environmental Enterprise Development.

The Training of Trainers is supported by The Government of Flanders, which is active in Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa. It works not only with the local authorities, but also with indirect actors such as NGOs, research institutes and international organizations. In South Africa, the focus is on job creation through Small Enterprise Development, and improving food security through smallholder farming.

SEED is a global partnership for action on sustainable development and the green economy. Founded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, SEED supports innovative small scale and locally driven
enterprises around the globe which integrate social and environmental benefits into their business model.

ToT Benefits

The ToT will offer the following benefits to its participants:

  • Overview of successful social and environmental enterprise business models;
  • Introduction to highly relevant state-of-the-art business support topics;
  • Access to hands-on tools for the support of social and environmental enterprises;
  • Case-study driven insights on business strategy & development;
  • Peer-to-peer networking with experienced business development service providers;
  • Opportunity to improve personal training and facilitation skills;
  • Methodology insights in how to run participant oriented coaching and mentoring programmes.

Eligibility

This ToT is for individuals who work at the interface of politics, business and civil society, and support business or entrepreneurial solutions for social and environmental challenges. SEED strive to have a diversified group of participants balancing gender and organisational representation.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have:

  • basic experience or a strong interest in working with start-up social and environmental enterprises in South Africa;
  • basic experience or a strong interest in providing business management oriented capacity building, including business planning and business management trainings;
  • have a degree in a relevant academic or business related field;
  • basic experience or a strong interest in facilitating interactive and participatory workshops;
  • basic experience or a strong interest in working on the triple bottom line;
  • the capacity to communicate and provide capacity building in English to SMMEs.Please note: Given the number of participant slots (15) we will be only able to accept 1-2 candidates per organisation. However, there may be exceptions depending on the range of applicants who meet the criteria for participation. If you are an independent consultant, please submit a letter of endorsement from a third party.

Methodology

The ToT will encourage effective learning with a participant-led and hands-on methodology. It will focus on participants sharing their own experiences, guided by the introduction of new conceptual approaches, tools and case studies. It will be geared by short inputs, case studies, practical exercises and group work. The materials are based on proven methods, which were developed in the framework  of the SEED support 2009-2015.

Nominating

The SEED South Africa – Western Cape ToT call for nominations will be open from 28 October – 12 November 2015. Nominations received after this date will not be considered. Nominations may be submitted directly by the applicant, by a partner organisation, or by any third party that is familiar with the applicant.

Practical Information

  • There are no participation fees for this ToT programme. Transportation and accommodation is not included and must be arranged individually. However, SEED offer a limited number of scholarships to subsidize participation and accommodation costs.

2015 OFID-UNDP Cross-Regional Grants Competition for Non‐Profit Organizations

The  OPEC  Fund  for  International  Development  (OFID)  and  the  United  Nations  Development  Programme (UNDP)  are   launching   the   first   joint   Cross­‐Regional   Grants   Competition.

The   competition   will   help   address  shared  development  challenges  of  Europe  and  Central  Asia  (ECA)  and  the  Middle  East  and  North  Africa   (MENA).   The   Competition   will   bring   together   non‐profit   organizations   from   ECA   and   MENA   in  order  to  develop  and  share  innovative  and  scalable  development  solutions  in  two  areas:

(1)   Affordable  Energy  and  Water,  and

(2)  Economic  Governance  and  Employment.

These  will  take  the  form  of  small‐scale  practical  projects  that  can  later  be  scaled  up  with  addition  practical  projects  that  can  later  be  scaled  up  with  addition.

For  this  Call  for  Proposals  applications  will  be  accepted  from non‐profit  organizations  that  are registered  and  operating  in  the  following  countries and  territories:
Middle  East  and  North  Africa: Djibouti,  Egypt,  Jordan,  Lebanon,  Morocco,  Somalia,
State  of  Palestine,  Sudan,  Syria,  Tunisia,  Yemen.
Note:  special  preference  will  be  given  to  applications  from  NGOs  and/or  involving  NGOs  from  Djibouti,   Morocco,  Somalia, State  of Palestine,  Sudan,  Syria,  Yemen
ELIGIBILITY:  WHO  MAY  APPLY?
In  order  to  be  eligible  for  the  grant,  applicants  and  partners  should:
  • Operate in  the  countries  covered  by  this  grant  competition.
  • Be  a  non‐profit  making  organisation registered  under  the  relevant  laws  of  the  country  where  it  is  registered-registration  certificate  duly  translated  into  English  needs  to  be  submitted  with  the   proposal   as   proof   of   the   status   of   the   organization.   Various   types   of   legal   entities   are   entitled   to   participate   in   the   call,   including   but   not   limited   to   civil   society   organizations,  academic  institutions,  and  business  associations.
  • Be   directly   responsible   for   the   preparation,   management   and   implementation   of   the   project  and  need  to  demonstrate  prior  experience  in  implementing  activities  in  the  thematic  areas  of  the  call.
Eligible  activities  for  funding:
Projects  can  include  (but  are  not  limited  to)  the  following  type  of  activities:
  • Research  activities;
  • Developing  technical  solutions  and  prototypes;
  • Organization   of   events   (seminars/   trainings/   workshops/   conferences)   with   the   aim   of  knowledge  sharing and  development  of  technical  solutions;
  • Documenting  solutions/  prototypes  or  innovative  id
The  grants  will  be  awarded  for  projects that  have:
• Have   cross‐regional   coverage.   Therefore,   the   projects   have   to   be   developed   in   partnership   between  at  least  two  different  participating  countries,  including at  least  one  from  each  region,  but  with  strong  emphasis  on  the  lower‐income  countries.
• Deal   with   testing   and   implementing   new   approaches,   adapting   existing   approaches   to   new contexts,  or  applying  what  has  been  learned  from  previous  work.
• Demonstrate  the  potential  for  community‐level  impact and  that  have  the  potential  to  be  scaled up  into  larger  programme
GRANT  FUNDING
This   grant   competition   is   expected   to   result   in   funding   of   three   to   five   cross-regional   projects.   The  number  of  grants  awarded  will  depend  on  the  number  of  high-quality  applications  received.
Size  of  grants:
Minimum:   20,000  USD
Maximum:  55,000  USD
The  grant  can  over  up  to  100%  of  the  eligible  costs  of   a  proposed   project  or  can  come  as  a   contribution to  a   larger   project with  clear  indication  of  how  it  contributes  to  the  bigger  initiative.
Submission Stages:
  • The   OFID­‐UNDP   grant   competition   will   begin  with   the   launch   of  the   call   for   project   proposals   on  2 February 2015.
  • This  grant  competition  has a two-staged approach:
1) Expression  of  Interest  phase
During  this  stage  the  potential  applicant(s) have to   develop   an  initial project  idea and   provide a clear   concept  of  what  project  an  organization  wants  and  is  qualified  to  do.

Full  Application  phase

2013 Youth Integrity Camp for Anglophone West Africans.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Transparency International ,The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission(ICPC)  and other stakeholders, hereby invites application for the  2013 Anglophone West Africa Youth Integrity Camp in Nigeria (5-day Youth Integrity Camp for youth leaders from Anglophone West African countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, the Gambia and Sierra Leone) in Lagos, Nigeria on the 23rd – 27th of September 2013.

The camp is organised with the conviction that a strong and responsible leadership in these sectors must be anchored by one of the main pillars of the country, the youth. The goal is to give these young leaders the tools and motivation to become active defenders of open and responsible governance, by effectively applying principles of integrity, transparency, accountability, and the participation and mobilisation of their peers.

During the camp, the youth leaders will work on their own concrete project, to be implemented in their home countries, as well as learn about different tools that exist in the fight against corruption. In this joint project, the UNDP and Transparency International want to create a framework for exchange and debate among these youth leaders, and incorporate principles of integrity into their behaviour and the environment.

The Youth Integrity Camp will bring together youth leaders from business, politics, public sector, civil society organizations, media, university, art, sports and religion, etc in order to:

  • Empower the youth to use their dynamism and innovative minds to promote integrity and public accountability;
  • Provide the youth with tools to enhance their efforts as agents of change in their respective communities as relates to fighting corruption and promoting public accountability;
  • Provide a forum for exchanging innovative approaches, ideas and best practices from the different countries of the sub-region towards improving transparency, accountability and participation in their respective communities.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Membership of a youth association/organisation from the following sectors: sports, music, politics, education, professional, private/public sector, civil society, media, universities and religious bodies/associations.
  • Be between 18-35 years
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Have completed senior secondary school (minimum requirement)
  • Female youth who satisfy the above criteria are strongly encouraged to apply.

Method of Application:

  1. Evidence of membership of a youth association/ organization from the aforementioned sectors, such as a signed letter from a member of the association’s board on the official letter-head of the association.
  2. A current and updated CV (max. 2 pages);
  3. Scanned copy of certificate from highest level of education achieved;
  4. A 1 – page document enumerating motivations and interests in participating; and
  5. A 1- page proposal of a project on how integrity can be translated into action. In the course of the camp, project proposals will be discussed and information provided on how to translate proposed projects into concrete actions. Potential participants are encouraged to consider exploring creative ways of putting a “human face” on the sums of money lost to corruption. The use of research, information technology and available media tools is highly encouraged to paint a “before” and “after” picture of how funds that have been lost to acts of corruption could have been used to transform a local community/state or a particular sector (e.g. health, education, water resources, agriculture etc).
