2014 PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival on Migration, Diversity and Social.

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) invites the world’s youth to submit original and creative videos focusing on PLURAL+ themes: migration, diversity and social inclusion.

Recognizing youth as powerful agents of social change in a world often characterized by intolerance, and cultural and religious divisions, PLURAL+ invites youth to address key challenges related to migrant integration, inclusiveness, identity, diversity, human rights and social cohesiveness, both at local and global levels.

Young people up to 25 years old are invited to submit short videos of five minutes maximum in length.

Prizes & Awards

  • The PLURAL+ JURY AWARD prizes will be awarded in three (3) age-based categories:
  • 9 to 12 years old
  • 13 to 17 years old
  • 18 to 25 years old
  • The PLURAL+ Jury Awards will be awarded to one entrant per category and will be selected by an independent international jury.
  • The 3 winners of the PLURAL+ JURY AWARD will each receive US$1,000.
  • One representative of each PLURAL+ International Jury Award winner will be invited to New York, all travel expenses paid, to present their work at the PLURAL+ 2014 Awards Ceremony at the Paley Center for Media in December 2014.
  • Additional awards will be given by collaborating partner agencies and may include equipment or professional opportunities.

“Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” World Day for Cultural Diversity May 21 Online Video Contest

 

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in partnership with UNESCO and various other partners from corporations to civil society is launching“Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” campaign aimed at engaging people around the world to Do One Thing to support Cultural Diversity and Inclusion.

Following the adoption in 2001 of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, the UN General Assembly declared May 21 as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This day raises awareness on the richness of world cultures and the opportunities that cultural diversity can bring to societies.

As part of the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” 2013 campaign, we are organizing a video contest. The winning videos will be included within the UNAOC Plural + Youth Video Festival DVD.http://pluralplus.unaoc.org

The “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” video contest is designed to allow the participants to creatively portray their “Do One Thing” through a one-minute video. The theme of diversity and inclusion needs to be explicit.

Eligibility

• The individual who submits the video is considered ‘the participant’ in the contest.

• Multiple individuals are still allowed to work on the video.

• The videos submitted need to reflect the theme of diversity and inclusion.

• Immediate family members (siblings, children and grandchildren) of jurors for the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” video contest are not eligible to enter the competition.

• The Selection Committee will evaluate entries based on originality, creativity, and relevance to the topic of cultural diversity and inclusion.

Format

• Videos that are not in English must have English subtitles.
• All videos must be one-minute maximum of running time.

Consent and Copyright

• By participating in the contest, the makers of the video grant the UNAOC and “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” campaign partners the rights for the use of the video in any format.

• Participants must get the consent of everyone appearing in their videos if their faces are recognizable.

• Participants must get the consent of everyone whose copyrighted, patented or trademarked material appears in their videos.

• Participants must get the consent of everyone whose music is used in their videos unless consent is not needed (due to lack of copyright etc.).

Subject

• No video may contain vulgarity, violence, defamatory language or any other subject deemed by the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” committee to be inappropriate for the tone of the competition.

• Videos must pertain to the topics of cultural diversity and inclusion.

• Reflecting on these topics, videos should show the participants’ thoughts, experiences, opinions, questions and suggestions.

• Videos may be of whatever type, style or genre – animated, documentary, drama, music video, comedy etc.

Use of the Video

• The makers of the video will continue to own the rights of their videos, but when they submit the video to the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” video contest, the UNAOC and the campaign partners have unlimited use of the video for non-commercial and educational purposes.

• The UNAOC and its associated partners reserve the right to show any submitted videos a limitless, non commercial, number of times in whatever format they deem fit for the purpose of the advocacy campaign.

• The makers of the video agree to the possibility of wide multi-platform distribution of their work, including broadcast, DVD and Internet distributions (social media: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube… etc).

Rules & Regulations for submitting videos

Please read the rules and regulations carefully.

Participating in the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” video contest of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) means that you have agreed to all of the rules and regulations listed below.

For promotional and educational purposes we will be using the selected videos on diverse platforms for the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” campaign as well as include them on the PLURAL + Youth Video Festival DVD.

Submissions

• Please post your videos on your personal Facebook page mentioning the campaign page using the tag @DoOneThing for Diversity and Inclusion.

• To tag the Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion page, add an “@” sign, and with no space after, begin typing “Do One Thing…” until you see the page in the drop-down menu. Select it and the words will appear in your status as blue. Once you post, it will link to the page automatically.

• You can also upload them to YouTube and then post it on our Facebook page directly.

• Participants must follow these instructions or risk their submission not being considered for the contest.

Prizes & Awards

• Winning videos will receive USD 1500 donated by Weyerhaeuser and TAL Televisión América Latina.

  • In addition, each winner will receive Najafi Global Mindset’s upcoming book Developing your Global Mindset: The Handbook for successful global leaders.

2013 UNAOC-Education First Summer School (All Expense Paid Summer School in New York)

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) is collaborating with Education First (EF) in the context of the first UNAOC-EF Summer School, which will take place in Tarrytown, NY, USA, from 24 to 31 of August 2013.

This week-long summer school brings together 100 youth from across the globe to address pressing global challenges within the context of cultural and religious diversity.

The UNAOC-EF Summer School will bring together 100 youth from all over the world for a week of discussions on pressing global challenges within the context of cultural and religious diversity. Several skills-building workshops will be offered with a view to strengthen participants’ ability on topics such as peace-building, human rights, advocacy, social entrepreneurship, etc.

The objectives of the UNAOC-EF Summer School are to:

  • contribute to the empowerment of young people by enhancing their intercultural skills and competences;
  • strengthen young people’s capacity to get involved in the preparation and implementation of cooperative action across borders;
  • facilitate networking and exchanges between young people; and
  • develop a network of alumni and make it an important platform for joint action to help address a global challenge.

Skills for positive social change

The seminars, workshops and roundtable discussions at the Summer School will cover a range of themes and topics, including:

  • Negotiation for peace-building and cooperation
  • Using social media for positive social change
  • Fostering responsible global citizenship
  • Effective advocacy
  • Media and information literacy
  • Essentials of social entrepreneurship

Eligibility for the UNAOC-EF Summer School

In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:

  • be between the ages of 18 and 35 years old on 24 August 2013 — the start of the UNAOC – EF Summer School.
  • be linked to an organization or a network (e.g. youth council, youth NGO, not-profit organization, youth-led organization, community organization, faith-based organization, youth network or platform, college, university), or be a social entrepreneur, blogger, intern or volunteer.
  • hold a passport valid until at least March 2014 (for a visa to be issued, a passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after the expected date of entry into the country).
  • possess upper-intermediate English proficiency.

Selected participants of the UNAOC – EF Summer School 2013 will be provided with the following:

  • international travel to and from the international airport closest to their residence (this economy class international ticket will follow the most direct route),
  • visa and travel insurance,
  • shared accommodation (double or triple rooms with participants of the same gender) while in Tarrytown,
  • meals during the official portions of the Summer School,
  • full event access during the entire week of the Summer School, and
  • shuttles from and to the airport in New York City.
  • the cost of US and transit visas (if applicable),
  • the cost of vaccinations required to enter the US (if applicable), and
  • the cost of medical insurance required to enter the US (if applicable).

Participants will cover the following:

  • local transportation to and from the international airport closest to their residence,
  • cost of meals and other incidental expenses while traveling from and to their residence to New York City,
  • cost of meals and other incidental expenses incurred outside of the official portions of the Summer School, and
  • any souvenirs, phone calls, equipment, etc. purchased for the Summer School or during the Summer School.

Please note that neither the UNAOC nor EF will reimburse any expense incurred by participants to the Summer School.

Selection Announcement

The selected participants will be announced on 1 July 2013. All applicants will receive an email announcing the results of the selection process.

This year marks the fourth UNAOC Summer School.

Youth (between 18 and 35) who are interested in attending this year’s summer school can apply at www.UNAOCEFSummerSchool.org on or before 15 June 2013.

Selected participants will be provided with flight, accommodation, meals and full event access.

Young people up to 25 years old are invited to submit short videos of five minutes maximum in length.

A prestigious international jury will select three winners in each age categories (9-12, 13-17, and 18-25). All the winners will be invited to New York, all travel expenses paid, to present their work at the PLURAL+ 2013 Awards Ceremony at the Paley Center for Media in December 2013. Furthermore, winners will be distinguished by PLURAL+ partner awards.

Eligibility

  • Entrants to PLURAL+ must be youth between the ages of 9-25.
  • The Entrant is the one person responsible for submitting the video.
  • People appearing in the video do not have to be youth. However the videos must reflect the youth’s opinions or reflections about migration and diversity.
  • Multiple youth may work together to make one video, as long as all members of the group are between the ages of 9-25.
  • Other people involved in the making of the video (e.g. educators, teachers, instructors, etc.) might be over 25 as long as their creative role is minimal (group coordination, technical support, renting equipment, etc.)
  • If multiple youth work together on one video then the video will be judged in the age category of the eldest youth.
  • Immediate family members (siblings, children and grandchildren) of jurors for the PLURAL+ Video Festival are not eligible to enter the Video Festival.

Format

  • Preferably all videos should be submitted on DVDs, or through a file hosting website of choice (MediaFire, YouSendit,…)
  • Videos that are not in English must have English subtitles.
  • All videos must be 5 minutes maximum of running time, including title and end credits.

 PLURAL+ 2013 call for entries will close on, 30 June 2013.

Submissions

  • All entries must include a fully completed and signed entry form, including co-signature by a parent, guardian, teacher or responsible adult if the entrant is a minor in his/her country of residence.
  • If submiting a DVD, each package must contain:.
  • a.    The fully completed entry form
  • b.    The DVD of the video
  • c.    All DVDs must have the name of the entrant and the English title of the video printed on top of the DVD in permanent marker.

  • a.     Participants must follow these instructions or risk their entry not being accepted.
  • b.   The Entry Form must also be included as an attachment to the email. Videos will not be accepted without the Entry Form completed and signed.      
  • PLURAL+ is not responsible for the cost of sending videos.
  • PLURAL+ will not be able to return the DVDs so please keep master copy of your video in a safe place.
  • PLURAL+ is not responsible for lost, late, misrouted, misappropriated, or damaged entries.
  • Entrants must inform the PLURAL+ Video Festival organizers if their contact information changes at anytime between submitting their video and the announcement of the competition winner.
  • The official language of the PLURAL+ Video Festival is English.

 Deadline

  • Packages containing DVD entries must be posted by Sunday June 30, 2013.
  • File hosting website must be received by the PLURAL+ Video Festival before Midnight (New York City Time GMC -5hours) on Sunday June 30, 2013.
  • Entries received after this time will not be considered. Please make sure that you leave ample time for your video to arrive in New York.
