Thomson Reuters Foundation Trafficking in Women & Children Reporting Lab for African Journalists (Funded to Nairobi, Kenya)

The Thomson Reuters Foundation together with the Global Leadership Academy and the GIZ Sector Programme on Gender Equality and Women’s Rights are launching a leadership and innovation Lab “Unveil the Hidden Presence: Trafficking in Women and Children”. The Lab will bring together about 30 high-ranking participants from governments, media, business, academia, and civil society. It will work on approaches to increase awareness on, and prevent trafficking in women and children with aspecific focus on the African context.

The Lab process will take place between April and December 2018. It is essential that participants ensure their availability at the two face-to face modules:
Module 1: Nairobi, Kenya: 25th to 28th June, 2018
Module 2: London, United Kingdom: 10th to 13th November, 2018
In addition they will be expected to engage in some ongoing activities between the meetings to develop and implement transformative actions.

ELIGIBILITY

In terms of journalists, the programme is looking for participants who:
•    Have a strong motivation to investigate and report on human trafficking
•    Are strongly motivated to help transform existing paradigms
•    Are open to different and new ways of thinking
•    Are interested in developing personally
•    Are fluent in English

FUNDING

All costs for the coaching, and the meetings including facilitation, and meals during the meetings are covered. Participants are expected to be responsible for their travel and accommodation costs, though a limited number of scholarships are available for flight and/or accommodation for the face-to-face meetings.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted in April.

Trust Women Scholarship Programme 2016 to attend the Trust Women Conference in London.

The Trust Women Scholarship is part of the Trust Women Conference, hosted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation on 30 November and 01 December 2016 in London, United Kingdom.
Requirements
  • The Trust Women Scholarship Programme is open to all applicants working in the areas of human trafficking, slavery in the supply chain, education and women’s rights. Priority will be given to applicants from developing countries who demonstrate their participation at Trust Women will enhance their work in their own communities.
  • All applicants must speak English, the language of the conference.

This year, The Thomson Reuters Foundation will award up to 50 scholarships to applicants from diverse disciplines that will bring unique perspectives and help forge tangible commitments at Trust Women. For global leaders who want to connect and take action, the prestigious Trust Women Scholarship Programme offers access to an influential gathering of NGOs, heads of corporations, lawyers, public servants and philanthropists from around the world.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation and the sponsors of Trust Women will award scholarships to exceptional applicants from across the world. Scholarship selection will be based on an objective rating system developed by the scholarship review committee.

Scholarships will include:

  • Free attendance at the Trust Women Conference on 30 November and 01 December 2016 in  London, United Kingdom

2015 Wealth of Nations Reporting on illicit finance in Africa Workshop for Journalists

Where: Workshops in 2015 are provisionally scheduled for June and September and will take place in a variety of locations including Uganda, South Africa, Senegal and Tunisia.

The Thomson Reuters Foundation and Wealth of Nations is looking for investigative or financial/business journalists based anywhere in Africa to take part in a long-term scheme that will develop their ability to report on illicit finance and tax abuse.

Eligibility:

  • Journalists with at least two years of professional experience
  • Journalists with experience of investigative journalism and/or reporting on companies/finances
  • Journalists with a proven motivation to spend significant time reporting on illicit finance and tax abuse
  • Both freelancers and staff journalists may apply. Journalists working for a news organisation will need consent from their editor to take part. Freelancers should provide evidence that one or more media organisations will be willing to take their work.
  • Journalists working in any medium or multiple media are welcome to apply (print, online, radio or television)

Benefits of the scheme

  • If selected, you will take part in two intensive workshops (3-5 days each) covering illicit finance, reporting on companies, accounts and budgets, and investigative techniques
  • You will propose one or more story ideas that you wish to work on within the scheme – we will provide experienced investigative journalists to help you pursue your stories right up to publication/broadcast
  • You will have exclusive access to expertise with regular webinars featuring illicit finance experts
  • You will also have access to story ideas and editorial advice, and will be invited to share your own expertise with participants from other regions

Journalists who take part must commit to all elements of the programme.vParticipants will sign an agreement to this effect.

  • Two relevant samples of your work – if your work is online you can provide links, otherwise please ensure you have files ready to upload
