The Social & Inclusive Business Camp 2024 for young African Social Entrepreneurs.

Applications are now open for the 2024 Social & Inclusive Business Camp. The Social and Inclusive Business Camp is an acceleration program for innovative entrepreneurs with social and/or environmental impact in Africa, with a scaleup ambition to contribute to a fairer and more sustainable economy. 

Eligibility Requirements

Female project’s owner

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP: 

  • Female-led structure (CEO or equivalent)
  • Private moral structure: companies, associations, support structures for entrepreneurship and cooperatives

FOOTHOLD IN AFRICA

  • Established in at least one country in Africa
  • Legally registered with the competent national authorities
  • Exist officially for at least 3 years

HYBRID ECONOMIC MODEL: Having an economic model is based on a whole or part commercial activity (sale of goods or services), which can therefore optionally integrate ‘subsidies’ for its balance

IMPACT MISSION : Have a social or environmental and/or environmental mission (demonstrated in the majority of activities and/or registered in the statutes)

GEOGRAPHICAL AMBITION: Your organisation has planned to develop its activity in new territories at the national or international level.

Will not be eligible:

  • Applications submitted by men
  • Individual applications (without legally registered structure)
  • Structures less than 3 years old
  • Structures NOT having a social and/or environmental mission,
  • Structures with NO business model, NO income generation, or only dependent to grant
  • Public and parapublic organizations
  • Structures at the project stage (without first income, prototype or proof of concept)

Benefits

This hybrid acceleration program includes

  • 4-month e-learning & coaching using our dedicated plateform, with a mix of digital training ressources and interactive virtual classes with your peers and international experts.
  • 1-week intensive Bootcamp in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to experiment transformational pedagogy and enhance your ability to take action.
  • Mentoring from an experienced entrepreneur, former participant to the SIBC program, with additional support from experts within your ecosystem or AFD Group.
  • Networking opportunities, becoming a member of an active community of +300 african entrepreneurs and connecting with investors and funders during the Bootcamp.

Program Details

The program supports your work within 5 dimensions

  • DIAGNOSE | During this prelimnary section 0, each entrepreneur will question and challenge, individually and collectively, the social and/or environmental mission of her organisation, and will clarify her own vision and purpose, using dedicated approchaches, tools (Business model Canvas, Scale Me Up, etc.) and personalized follow-up. 
  • INSPIRE | Section 1 aims to encourage women entrepreneurs to explore living things principles and to draw inspiration from it into their entrepreneurship project (planetary boundaries, inclusiveness, cooperation). It will also dive into your position as an african woman entrepreneur, and explore available options to mobilise collective intelligence.
  • SPREAD | Good preparation for scaling up is an essential dimension and a crucial step to grow and sustain your project. Whether it involves expanding geographically, maximising your impact, or creating new partnerships, section 2 will provide insights to consider scale up trajectories, give access to specific tools to assess social and environmental impact over time, and strategies to communicate effectively about their project.
  • FINANCE | What financing needs do you have? Which instruments are available and from whom? How could your business model become more hybrid? What are the expectations of investors or donors?  All of these issues will be addressed in this section 3. 
  • COOPERATE | This last section is dedicated to developping you ability to pitch your project and to embark potential partners, investors or donors. Beyond the consolidation of your pitch deck and live presentations in front of professionals, you will also investigate innovative approaches to bring allies into your project and concepts around Commons.

  • Proof of the legal registration of the company (registration document, statutes, etc.)
  • Financial statements of the last 3 years (or if younger company, since its creation)
  • Detailed CV of the project leader
  • If desired, a pitch-deck or video-pitch

Apply for the sixth edition of the Social & Inclusive Business Camp (SIBC)! An acceleration and capacity building programme to boost entrepreneurs with high impact and growth potential on the African continent.

The Social & Inclusive Business Camp is an acceleration and capacity building programme. It is dedicated to entrepreneurs with an impact project on the African continent and willing to scale up. 

It is a hybrid support programme, including: 

  • 3 months of remote coaching on a dedicated online platform, alternating interactive virtual classes with international experts and learning resources to consult autonomously. 
  • 1 week of intensive Bootcamp in Marseille, France, in partnership with the EMERGING Valley Summit (event dedicated to emerging innovations between Europe and Africa) 
  • The possibility for each participant to be followed by a mentor, an experienced alumni of the programme  
  • Networking, through integration into an active and ambitious international community of 240 entrepreneurs and networking with investors and financial partners during the Bootcamp.  

Since its first edition in 2017, the SIBC has supported 240 entrepreneurs with a strong social impact in Africa in their transition to scale-up, in the measurement of their social performance and in their preparation for fundraising. 

The programme is organised around 4 key themes 

  • Leadership, governance and team: defining better your purpose and mission, structuring your governance, and organizing your teams for successful growth  
  • Scale up: Adapting your business model and building your scale-up strategy to multiply your impact (with a specific focus on female leadership) 
  • ESG & Impact: defining your ESG & Impact policy and measuring your social performance 
  • Investment Readiness: identifying your financing needs, understanding investor expectations, and preparing to raise funds 

Requirements

To apply, the company must meet all these criteria: 

  • Be a legally registered company 
  • Prove a positive impact in Africa: social or environmental impact, activity serving vulnerable populations (women, people with disabilities, refugees…) and/or integrating vulnerable populations in its value chain as customers, distributors, suppliers or employees 
  • Prove that you have first customers, a turnover and a balanced economic model or a medium-term profitability objective  
  • Have a desire to grow and present a scale-up strategy that takes into account the maximisation of social or environmental impact 

The candidate representing the company, referred to here as the “applicant” or “the candidate”, must be the founder, co-founder, manager or at least in a position to make strategic decisions for the company. 

The following will not be eligible: 

  • Individual applications 
  • NGOs without a business model or profitability objective 
  • Public and semi-public organisations 
  • Companies at the project stage (without first revenues, prototype or proof of concept) 

Prerequisites to participate in the programme: 

  • The candidate representing the company, called “the applicant” or “the candidate”, must be the founder, co-founder, manager or at least in a position to make strategic decisions for the company;  
  • The applicant must ensure that he/she has sufficiently stable internet access to be able to follow the training and exchange sessions in good conditions;  
  • The candidate will have to be able to allocate time to the programme from September to the end of November 2022, at a rate of approximately 2 hours per week over this period 
  • The active involvement of the laureates within the SIBC community, and with future laureates through mentoring, etc., is hoped for. 

Timeline 

  • May 9th – June 26th 2022: submission of applications 
  • June 26th – July 08th 2022: examination of the applications and selection of the 40 participants chosen by the consortium and selection committee 
  • July 18th 2022: announcement of the selected candidates. 
  • End of August 2022: start of the programme and distance learning  
  • End of November 2022: Intensive one-week bootcamp in Marseille and participation in the EMERGING Valley Summit

The Social & Inclusive Business Camp 2021 for young African Social Entrepreneurs.

The Social & Inclusive Business Camp is an acceleration and capacity building program dedicated to entrepreneurs presenting a project with an impact on the African continent and having the desire to develop their activity (scaling up).

It is a hybrid support program, comprising:

  • 3 months of remote coaching on a dedicated online platform, alternating interactive virtual classes with international experts and educational resources to be consulted independently;
  • 1 week of intensive Bootcamp in Marseille , France, in partnership with the EMERGING Valley Summit (event dedicated to emerging innovations between Europe and Africa);
  • The possibility for each participant to be followed by a mentor , experienced alumni of the program; 
  • Networking , through integration into an active and ambitious international community of 200 entrepreneurs and networking with investors and financial partners during the Bootcamp.

Since the first edition in 2017, the SIBC has supported 200 entrepreneurs with an impact on the African continent in their scaling up, the measurement of their social performance and their preparation for fundraising.

The program is organized around 4 key themes: 

  • Leadership, governance and team: better define its purpose and act, structure its
  • governance and organize its teams for successful growth;
  • Scale up: adapt your business model and build your scale up strategy to multiply its impact;
  • ESG & Impact: define its ESG policy (Environmental, Social and Good Governance criteria) & Impact and measure its social performance;
  • Investment preparation: specify your financing needs, understand investors’ expectations and prepare your fundraising. 

Eligibility criteria:

To apply, the company must meet all of these criteria:  

  • Be a legally registered business;
  • Justify a positive impact in Africa: social or environmental impact, activity serving vulnerable populations (women, people with disabilities, refugees, etc.) and / or creating jobs for these populations;
  • Justify first customers, a turnover and a balanced economic model or a medium-term profitability objective;
  • Have a desire for growth and present a scaling up strategy taking into account the maximization of social or environmental impact.

The candidate representing the company, designated here by the term “project leader”, must be the founder, co-founder, manager or at least in a position to make strategic decisions for the company.

Will not be eligible:

  • Individual applications; 
  • Associations that do not have an economic model or profitability objective;
  • Public and parapublic organizations;
  • Companies at the project stage (without first income, prototype or proof of concept). 

Calendar :

  • May 21 – July 3, 2021: submission of applications
  • July 19, 2021: examination of the applications and selection of the 40 participants selected by the consortium and selection committee
  • End of July 2021: announcement of the selected candidates
  • End of August 2021: start of the program and distance training 
  • Beginning of December 2021: Intensive one-week bootcamp in Marseille and participation in the EMERGING Valley summit
