The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), in partnership with Mastercard Foundation is implementing an eight year transformative project to ruforum-mastercard-foundation-scholarship-award-20172018-for-young-africans/meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development. The aim of the partnership is to transform African agricultural universities and their graduates to better respond to developmental challenges through enhanced application of science, technology, business and innovation for rural agricultural transformation

Under this partnership, 110 undergraduate and 110 Masters Scholarships will be provided over a period of eight years. The scholarships target academically deserving yet economically disadvantaged, marginalized communities and those coming from conflict and post conflict areas of Africa. The scholarships are tenable at Egerton University in Kenya and Gulu University in Uganda. Students enrolled under this scholarship program will receive comprehensive scholarships, leadership development, life skills support, entrepreneurship training and mentorship and exposure to community engagement

For the academic year 2019, 50 Undergraduate and 20 Masters Scholarships will be made available, of which 70% will be for Kenya and Uganda nationals. Sixty percent (60%) and fifty percent (50%) of the scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate and masters’ female applicants, respectively. These scholarships are only tenable at Gulu University in  Uganda and Egerton University in Kenya.

1. Bachelor of Science in Agri-Entrepreneurship and Communication Management (5 slots)
2. Bachelor of Science in Food and Agribusiness (5 slots)
3. Bachelor of Science in Biosystems Engineering (5 slots)
4. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (5 slots)
5. Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (5 slots)
6. Master of Science in Agri-Enterprises Development (5 slots)
7. Master of Science in Food Security and Community Nutrition (5 slots)

Egerton University

1. Bachelor of Agribusiness Management (7 slots)
2. Bachelor of Science in Community Development (6 slots)
3. Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management (6 slots)
4. Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Technology (6 slots)
5. Master of Science in Agricultural Extension (5 slots)
6. Master of Science in Soil Science (5 slots)


Application procedure

Applicants should obtain application forms for both the scholarships and admission from the university of choice.

Applicants shall only apply to one university of choice. Application forms can also be downloaded by clicking following websites: RUFORUM; Gulu University and Egerton University .

Applicants are encouraged to carefully study the application guidelines and provide all the required information and documents prior to submitting the application. Females are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) is a network of 85 Universities in 35 African countries is pleased to announce the 2018 RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC). The 2018 RUFORUM Young African
Entrepreneurs Competition (RUYAEC) whose overall purpose is to catalyse entrepreneurship
through promotion of business innovation and provision of seed funding to young entrepreneurs with creative and innovative business ideas among African youth.
RUYAEC invites young (<35 years) African entrepreneurs and incubates to compete for 10
awards to show case their innovations, enterprises and business concepts and propositions. The focus is for the young entrepreneurs to share their stories at an international stage with
close to 1200 participants drawn from academia, business and industry, development organisations, practitioners and philanthropists. It is hoped that through this competition,
young entrepreneurs’ business concepts, impact, innovation and business opportunities
can be expanded.
While the focus of this competition is on innovation in agribusiness, other innovations, incubations, business enterprises and business concepts along ICTs, health, engineering, natural resources, meteorology, urbanization, green economy, and transport and communication, among other areas, will be considered.

Purpose

The RUFORUM Young African Entrepreneurs Competition primary purpose is to promote business innovation through entrepreneurship and provide seed funding to young entrepreneurs with creative and innovative business ideas to be valorized and enhance and foster a spirit of entrepreneurship among African youth. The competition specifically seeks to:

  • Provide young entrepreneurs with opportunity to show-case their businesses and share their development as an inspiration to many young African potential entrepreneurs
  • Bring collective action towards provision of seed funding to young entrepreneurs through a transparent and competitive process.
  • Provide a platform for young entrepreneurs to demonstrate their impact and pitch their business with investors and stakeholders through capacity building opportunity.
  • Create a network of young entrepreneurs across Africa working together and sharing experiences that escalate youth contribution and job creation in Africa.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applications are invited from enterprises and individuals that meet the following eligibility
criteria.
  • Persons with an established business enterprise and/or those with innovations that can potentially be commercialized and/or those with business concepts
  • The business enterprise/potential enterprise should have a defined business model that show case the innovativeness of the proposed enterprise/business/innovation.
  • Persons in the age category 16-34 years
  • Submissions should be in English or French using the template provided.
Benefits
  • The ten (10) competitively selected business enterprises will receive all expenses paid trip (air ticket, conference registration, and hotel costs) for participation at the RUFORUM Biennial Conference (22-26 October, 2018) in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • The selected young entrepreneurs will receive a cash price award

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with The MasterCard Foundation, Gulu University and Egerton University are implementing an eight year program aimed at transforming African agricultural universities and their graduates to better respond to developmental challenges through enhanced application of science, technology, business and innovation for rural agricultural transformation. This is eight year program (2016-2024) and will be supporting students that are economically disadvantaged, those from post-conflict and conflict affected areas of Africa. Interested applicants will undertake their training at Gulu University and Egerton University.

Under this partnership, 110 undergraduate and 110 masters scholarships will be provided over a period of eight years. The scholarships target; academically deserving yet
economically disadvantaged, marginalized communities and those coming from conflict and post conflict areas of Africa. The scholarships are tenable at Egerton University in Kenya and Gulu University in Uganda.

Benefits:

  • Students enrolled under this scholarship program will receive comprehensive scholarships, leadership development, life skills support, entrepreneurship training and mentorship and exposure to community engagement.
  • For the academic year 2017/2018, 20 undergraduate and 10 masters scholarships are available of which 70% will be for Kenya and Uganda nationals.
  • For undergraduate scholarships, 60% will be awarded to female applicants and 50% at masters.

Requirements:

  • This scholarship opportunity is open to African students of all race, colour, dissent and who in particular are economically disadvantaged and those coming from conflict and post-conflict areas of Africa.
  • The applicant has to be in position to qualify for admission into undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs at Gulu University and/or Egerton University as listed above.
  • Students already having a scholarship of any kind are not eligible to benefit this scholarship opportunity anyone with a double scholarship if found will automatically be discontinue
