The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a non-profit organization that supports independent global journalism, is seeking applications for innovative data-driven journalism projects that spotlight under reported issues. This opportunity is open to all newsrooms and independent journalists in the United States and abroad.

Requirements

This opportunity is open to U.S. residents and journalists around the world.
The Pulitzer Center are open to proposals from freelance data journalists, staff journalists, or groups of newsrooms working in collaboration with a data project idea. We want to make sure that people from many backgrounds and perspectives are empowered to produce data journalism. We strongly encourage proposals from journalists and newsrooms who represent a broad array of social, racial, ethnic, underrepresented groups, and economic backgrounds.

Application Procedure:

To apply, you will be asked to provide the following:

A description of the proposed project, including distribution/publication plan, no more than 250 words. We look more favorably on proposals that include a letter(s) of interest or support from publishers or editors.
Methodology: Please describe your approach to collecting and analyzing the data, and include your approach for fact-checking or independently verifying the data that will be used in your reporting. (Fact-checking and data verification could be the role of the publishing partner, but please explain the process.)
A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Include travel costs, software, satellite/GIS, or hardware costs. Please do not include stipends for journalists/team members who are in the employ of newsrooms or are being paid by a publisher. If you are a journalist collaborating with a data designer and/or data visual specialist you may include consultant fees in your budget.
Three examples (links) of published work by you (or someone your project team.) For example: data visualizations, infographics, and/or data-driven stories.
Three professional references. These can be either contact information or letters of recommendation.
A copy of your resume or curriculum vitae.

Applications may also include a more detailed description of the project, but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary and the methodology.

Pulitzer Center Coronavirus News Collaboration Challenge 2020 for Journalists Worldwide ($10,000)

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a non-profit organization that supports independent global journalism, is seeking proposals that develop innovative approaches to reporting on the novel coronavirus crisis using collaboration among journalists and newsrooms across state lines or national borders. This opportunity is open to all newsrooms and independent journalists in the United States and abroad.

At a time of scarce media resources, the coronavirus story challenges newsrooms to find creative ways to bring accurate, compelling, and timely information to their readers. We are eager for proposals that break traditional notions of scooping and competition and instead use the power of sharing and collaboration to increase reporting capacity and expand the reach and impact of stories.

We are seeking strong proposals that involve a strategic and concerted effort by multiple journalists and/or newsrooms to pursue a reporting project together, leveraging resources, expertise, and publication platforms.

In addition to a strong collaboration component for reporting and publication, we encourage proposals that:

Focus on systemic, under-reported issues underlying the coronavirus crisis
Use data-driven and/or interdisciplinary approaches to reporting on coronavirus
Hold the powerful accountable

Requirements

This opportunity is open to journalists of all nationalities and regions of the world. We are open to proposals from groups of freelance journalists working together and groups of newsrooms collaborating on a project. We want to make sure that people from many backgrounds and perspectives are empowered to report on the coronavirus crisis. We strongly encourage proposals from journalists and newsrooms that represent a broad array of social, racial, ethnic, underrepresented groups, and economic backgrounds.

Application Procedure:

To apply, you will be asked to provide the following:

A description of the proposed project, including distribution/publication plan. No more than 250 words.
Methodology: Please describe your approach to collaborating with other journalists/newsrooms on coronavirus reporting. Include: who has agreed to take part in the collaboration; who will coordinate the effort; what resources will be shared across teams/newsrooms; what outputs are expected; timeline.
A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Include travel costs, software, coordination, data work. Please do not include stipends for journalists/team members who are in the employ of newsrooms or are being paid by a publisher. If you are a journalist collaborating with a data analyst and/or data visual specialist you may include consultant fees in your budget.
Three examples (links) of published work by you (or someone your project team.) For example: journalistic collaborations that you, your newsroom or partners in this project have been part of.

Persephone Miel Fellowship 2018 for Media Professionals outside the USA (Fully Funded)

The Persephone Miel Fellowship, overseen by the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with Internews, is designed to help journalists from the developing world do the kind of reporting they’ve always wanted to do and enable them to bring their work to a broader international audience. The fellowship will benefit those with limited access to other fellowships and those whose work is not routinely disseminated internationally. Miel fellowships involve reporting from within the applicant’s native country—or following migrant communities from there to other locations.

Eligibility:

The Persephone Miel fellowships are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers, staff journalists as well as freelancers and media professionals outside the U.S. who are seeking to report from their home country.
Women and journalists from developing countries are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants must be proficient in English.

Selection:

The fellowship recipient will be selected by the Pulitzer Center in consultation with Internews. Selection will be based on the strength of the proposed topic and the strength of the applicant’s work as demonstrated in their work samples.
The Persephone Miel fellowships are looking for projects that explore systemic issues in the applicant’s native country and that provide an overarching thesis, rather than individual spot-reports from the field.

Benefits:

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will provide a travel grant of $5000 for a reporting project on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream media.
Specific grant terms are negotiated during the application process based on the scope of proposed work and intended outcomes. Payment of the first half of the grant is disbursed prior to travel, upon receipt of required materials, and the second half on submission of the principal work for publication/broadcast.
The Pulitzer Center will also offer $2500 to cover travel expenses associated with travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with Pulitzer Center staff and journalists and take part in a 2-day workshop. Depending on the specific needs of the fellow, this may occur prior or after the reporting takes place.

Land grabs, land disputes, hidden land deals, phony C of O’s, flawed and opaque land registries— all pose a threat to the growth and development of Nigeria, one of Africa’s leading economic engines.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a grant-giving non-profit organization that supports independent global journalism is seeking applications from Nigerian journalists who want to participate in a collaborative reporting project to investigate land and property rights in their home country. The reporting will be published in Nigerian and international news outlets.

The call for this special grant opportunity is now open. Journalists are encouraged to submit their application on why they should be selected for the reporting project

Eligibility:

This special grant opportunity is open to all Nigerian journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers, staff journalists, as well as freelancers and media professionals who are seeking to report from their home country.

Selection:

The grant recipient will be selected by the Pulitzer Center, in consultation with African-based partner organizations: Sahara Reporters, Africa Check, Code for Nigeria, and BudgIT.
The grant recipient will be paired with mentors from the Pulitzer Center’s partner journalism organizations, who will help the grantee more fully develop the investigative story on land issues.

Selection will be based on the following criteria:

The story must take an investigative angle and focus on an under-reported aspect of land and property issues in Nigeria.
The proposal must include a data collection/data journalism approach. For example, data mining government documents, digitizing documents related to “off the books” land deals, creating datasets that reveal trends in land deals or tenure insecurity, or using data collected during reporting to create easy and simple to understand infographics.
The proposal needs to include a timeline and distribution plan for the story in the Nigerian media.
The strength of the proposed topic and the strength of the applicant’s work as demonstrated in their work samples.
Pulitzer Center are looking for projects that explore systemic issues related to land and property rights, and that provide an overarching thesis, rather than individual spot-reports from the field.

The fellowship, overseen by the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with Internews, is designed to help media professionals outside of the United States do the kind of reporting they’ve always wanted to do and enable them to bring their work to a broader international audience. The fellowship will benefit those with limited access to other fellowships and those whose work is not routinely disseminated internationally.

Before beginning the travel project the Persephone Miel Fellow will come to Washington, DC, to meet with Pulitzer Center staff and journalists and take part in a 2-day workshop on the pending project and strategies for placement and outreach. The Pulitzer Center will provide $2500 to cover travel expenses associated with the Washington workshop.

The Center works with fellowship recipients to distribute their work across multiple platforms in the U.S. to reach the widest possible audience. Projects with multimedia components that combine print, photography and video are strongly encouraged.

Next Generation of Science Journalists Award 2015 (500 Euro Grant to attend the World Health Summit 2015, Berlin Germany)

To support the recognition of emerging young medical science journalists and their contribution towards public understanding of science, the World Health Summit will for the fourth time present the “Next Generation of Science Journalists” Award.

The award is a cooperation of World Health Summit, Deutsches Ärzteblatt, the European Union of Science Journalists’ Associations (EUSJA), and the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

What:

Five outstanding young candidates will be invited to participate in the World Health Summit 2015, held from October 11-13 at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.
Prize money of 500 Euro to recompense travel expenses, and a certificate,
presented by the WHS Presidents Prof. Dr. Detlev Ganten (Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Shunichi Fukuhara (Kyoto University).

More than 1,200 participants from all health-related areas will be present at the Summit – from Nobel Prize laureates and Ministers to CEOs, internationally leading researchers and future leaders.

Application Procedure:

Submission of one article with a focus on “Health”, which must have been published after January 1, 2014. The article must be informed by an appropriate scientific background.
The article may be published in any form: print, digital, audible or visual. Audio and video content should be submitted via a corresponding web-link.
Submissions will be accepted from all countries; however the content should be in English. Translations will be accepted if the original article is attached.
Applicants should be at the beginning of their journalistic career with a maximum of 5 years’ experience.
A short CV (one page), and a copy of a current passport must accompany the submission.
