The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) awards grants to women from developing and middle-income countries to further their education and strengthen the professional and leadership skills they need to improve the lives of women and children.

The South Africa Grants Program is currently accepting applications from women enrolled at the following universities in South Africa: University of Witwatersrand, University of Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants are women from developing countries currently enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand, University of Stellenbosch, University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town in South Africa. A candidate applying for the MMMF grant from South Africa universities must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Has a record of service (paid and/or volunteer) to women and children in the developing world.
  2. Demonstrate a commitment to improve the lives of women and children in the developing world through field of study and/or topic of research.
  3. Plan to return to her country (or other developing country) within two years of completing her degree and intends to work to improve the lives of women and/or children.
  4. Demonstrates financial need by providing relevant financial information.
  5. Be enrolled at one of the universities in Argentina, Columbia, Mexico and Peru as mentioned above for the full academic year in which the application is submitted and intend to be enrolled for the subsequent year covered by the grant.
  6. Be a national of an eligible developing or middle-income country (see Country Eligibility List) and residing in one of the four above mentioned countries.
  7. Demonstrate good academic performance at the university where she is registered.
  8. Be at least 25 years of age by the relevant application deadline.
  9. Not be an immediate or extended family member of any World Bank Group, IMF or Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) staff member or their spouse.
  10. Not received a MMMF grant in any prior year.

Recommendation Forms

Two (2) recommendation forms are required. Please make sure to fill out the referees section in the Online Application form because this will be used to send a reminder to your referee.

  • One recomendation must be from a professor from your present institution.
  • The second recomendation may be from a former professor/supervisor from your country or from individuals who have known you for at least two semesters.

Africa Grants for the Academic Year 2014

For students from developing countries who are currently studying in South Africa at the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Witwatersrand. MMMF awards grants of approximately US$4,000 each.

A woman is eligible to apply for an MMMF grant if she meets all the following criteria:

  1. Has a record of service to women and a commitment to improve the lives of women and/or children in her country or other developing country.
  2. Is enrolled at the University of Pretoria, the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch or the University of Witwatersrand when applying and remains enrolled during the entire year covered by the grant.
  3. Resides in South Africa at the time she submits the application and during the course of the academic year in which the grant applies (except for dissertation research elsewhere, to be so indicated on application).
  4. Will use the grant toward completion of her degree.
  5. Will be able to use the grant money which is to be paid into her student’s account at the enrolled university.
  6. Is a national of a lower or middle income developing member country, as designated by the MMMF (Country Eligibility List).
  7. Intends to return to her country or another developing country within about two years of completing use of the MMMF grant and perform at least two years of service.
  8. Demonstrates financial need and satisfactory academic performance.
  9. Is at least 25 years old by the application deadline.
  10. Is not related to any World Bank Group staff member or his/her spouse.

There are no exceptions to the MMMF educational grant criteria listed above.

MMMF Application Process – Africa Program

The applications for the 2014 MMMF Africa Grant opens on May 13, 2013 and will close on August 14, 2013.

A COMPLETE application package consists of the following (NO exceptions):

  • One (1) Online Application Form (see item A below).
  • Two (2) Recommendation Forms (see item B below).
  • Five (5) Additional documents as listed in item C to be uploaded when filling the Online Application Form.

Please make sure to submit ALL documents as listed. Only complete applications will be accepted.

      • Two (2) recommendation forms are required. One must be by a professor from your present institution. The other can be by a former professor/supervisor from your country or elsewhere. One of the individuals must have known you for at least two semesters.
      • Please input information of your referees in the Online Application. Your referees will receive an email with a link to this page.
For Referees
Please download, complete and submit the recommendation form from your professional e-mail address to the MMMF at [email protected] by August 14, 2013.

Scan (PDF-format preferred) and upload in the Online Application Form.

      1. Your most recent transcript/academic report (available from the Registrar’s Office of your University) or progess report available from your program supervisor or professor.
      2. Your University Registration for 2013.
      3. One (1) passport-size photograph (jpeg, tiff or png – minimum 300 ppi resolution).
      4. Picture page of your passport (for all foreign students) or national identification document with photograph for South African students.
      5. Your study permit for South Africa (not applicable for South African students)

ALL the above documents (A-C) must be uploaded together. The MMMF will only accept electronic submissions.
