The International Women’s Media Foundation is pleased to announce its first ever cross-border reporting trip to Rwanda/DRC and second reporting trip to Uganda.

Ten women journalists will report on conservation and sustainable agriculture in Rwanda/DRC from January 26 – February 12, 2016.

Concurrently, a group of six journalists will cover themes of democracy and governance in Uganda from January 26 – February 8, 2016.

These opportunities are part of the African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, created in 2014 and designed to support women journalists interested in pursuing stories that go beyond the well-established narratives of political instability, armed conflicts, and humanitarian crisis in the region.

Over the next four years, the IWMF will continue to lead groups of women journalists to the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. By 2019, more than 250 reporters will have together reshaped traditional media narratives about this complicated region full of promise.

All Fellows will begin their trip in Nairobi, Kenya, where they will complete comprehensive security training and an orientation about the African Great Lakes region and focus countries. Fellows then depart for about one week of in-country independent reporting from Rwanda/DRC or Uganda, where they will have the opportunity to network with local journalists, collaborate with international peers, and meet with sources and discover sites relevant to their reporting.

Eligibility:

Eligibility Criteria

  • Women journalists of all nationalities are welcome to apply.
  • Applicant must be a woman journalist.
  • Applicant must have at least 3 years professional experience in journalism. Journalists working in print, broadcast, or digital media, including freelancers, are eligible.
  • Non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate support from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.

Worth:

  • The IWMF arranges travel and in-country logistics for all Fellows. The IWMF also covers fellowship-related costs within the framework of the reporting trip including travel, lodging, meals, and fixers/interpreters, unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.
  • Visa costs will also be covered, but fellows living outside the U.S. are responsible for procuring all necessary visas.

Application Guidelines

  • Applicant may not submit one application for multiple countries or trips. She must submit a complete application and story plan for each country for which she wants to apply.
  • Applications include basic details, a statement of interest including a researched story pitch, CV, work samples, and either a letter of support from an editor or a proven track record of publication.
  • All applications materials must be submitted in English.

International Women’s Media Foundation International Reporting Fellowships for Women Journalists (Fully Funded)

Worth: The IWMF pays for fellowship-related expenses including travel, lodging, meals and fixers/interpreters unless a selected journalist’s news organization wishes to assume these costs.

The International Women’s Media Foundation is now accepting applications from women journalists to participate in one of two international reporting fellowships, both tentatively scheduled to take place February 13-23, 2015.

As part of its African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, the IWMF will lead delegations of six journalists each to Rwanda and Uganda to cover underreported economic and rural development issues.

The first three days of the fellowship will consist of comprehensive security training and briefings by regional experts. Participating journalists will participate in one week of in-country independent reporting as well as group activities, and will have the opportunity to interact with key multi-sector stakeholders as well as local journalists.

Eligibility Requirements:

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

– Applicant must be a women journalist

– Must have at least 3 years professional experience in journalism. Journalists working in print, broadcast, or digital media, including freelancers, are eligible.

2014/2015 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship for Female Journalists.

The International Women’s Media Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2014/2015 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship.

The fellowship is designed for a woman journalist from anywhere in the world whose work in print, broadcast, or digital media has focused on human rights and social justice reporting.

This seven month-long program will take her to Boston and New York to study at MIT’s Center for International Studies and work for U.S. media outlets including The Boston Globe and The New York Times.

The fellowship was named for the 1998 IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner and The Boston Globe correspondent Elizabeth Neuffer, who was killed in Iraq in May 2003.

Created with Elizabeth Neuffer’s family and friends, the program aims to perpetuate her memory and advance her life mission of promoting international understanding of human rights and social justice while creating an opportunity for women journalists to build their skills.

The Fellowship

  • The 10th Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship runs from September 2014 to March 2015.
  • The fellow will be based at the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a research associate during the research component of the fellowship, allowing the fellow to pursue academic research while improving her ability to cover human rights and social justice for The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and other media outlets during the journalism portion of the fellowship.

Eligibility Requirement:

  • The IWMF is accepting applications from women journalists worldwide whose work focuses on human rights and
  • Who have a minimum of three years of experience in journalism.
  • Female journalists working in the print, broadcast and online media, including freelancers, are eligible to apply.
  • Competitive candidates must have excellent English skills.

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is now accepting applications for the 2013/2014 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship, designed for a woman journalist working in print, broadcast or digital news media to spend seven months in a tailored program that combines access to MIT’s Center for International Studies and media outlets including The Boston Globe and The New York Times.

It also gave me the chance to write for and speak to different audiences about India’s economic- humanitarian crisis”, she added.

Journalists working in the print, broadcast and Internet media, including freelancers, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience in journalism.
