Call for Applications: 3rd Annual Green Youth Indaba 2016 Pretoria South Africa

 Tosaca Media Group in partnership with the Department of Environmental Affairs, FP&M SETA and EWSETA are hosting the 3rd Annual Green Youth Indaba which will be hosted on the 29th – 30th June 2016 at The Innovation Hub, Pretoria, the theme of the Indaba is: “Green Innovations and Sustainable skills development for inclusive Growth”

The objective of this year’s Green Youth Indaba is to go beyond exploring opportunities for youth within the green economy but to effectively explore and unpack necessary strategies that can create easy access to support and fund green innovations and green careers, to empower youth with the information and skills transfer needed to eradicate youth unemployment and poverty by tapping into the Green Economy Jobs and business opportunities.

The Green Youth Indaba will convene together relevant government officials, private sector and green entrepreneurs as Government and business committed to the employment of young people in green economy activities. In this regard, it was agreed that at least 80% of new employees in the manufacturing and installation of solar-water heating systems and in public and community works programmes directed at environmental challenges, will be young people.

The conference is expected to bring together over 300 exceptional young people who are changing the face of the environment in South Africa and those that are aspiring to get into the Environmental industry. These youth and industry experts will come across South Africa to discuss the most pressing Environmental issues, opportunities and skills needed for youth within government, private sector and cities in South Africa.

Green Youth Indaba 2016 Green Innovators Pitch 3.0 (Incubation Worth R250,000)

Tosaca Media Group in partnership with The Innovation Hub, FP&M SETA, EWSETA and the Department of Environmental Affairs are proud to announce and invite you to participate at the Green Innovators Pitch 3.0

The pitch will take place on the 29-30 June 2016 at The The Innovation Hub,In support of youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Green Economy The Innovation Hub and Tosaca Media Group have launched the Green Innovators Pitch in 2016 with the objective to discover innovative initiatives and entrepreneurial skills among Youth by encouraging them to showcase their originality and creative ideas.

The Pitch will focus on the (6) Key pillars:

  • Renewable Energy
  • Agriculture
  • Green Buildings
  • Waste Management and Recycling
  • Water Conservation
  • Sustainability Mobility

Overriding investment criteria
1. Innovative Technology: GIP 3.0 is explicitly established to support clean technology innovation.
2. Job creation: the commercialisation of the project should demonstrably result in the creation of sustainable good quality jobs.
3. Skills Development: the implementation of the project should contribute towards skills development in the green economy.
4. Economic Growth and National Benefit: the applicant must detail how the implementation of the project will contribute to economic growth and socio-economic development, with an emphasis on Gauteng and South Africa.
5. Sustainability: the applicant must demonstrate sustainability of the project, and the extent to which it is commercially viable.
6. Project Team Profile: the applicant must demonstrate the project team’s ability to successfully implement the project, with clear indication of the BBBEE rating of the project team, involvement of communities as well as plan to achieve level 3 BBBEE over the duration of the project, where this is not the case.

Hack4Water Challenge 2016 for South African Citizens, Students, Researchers & Enterprises

Do you have a cool, innovative idea that could help South Africa with its water challenges?
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in partnership with the Open Government Partnership South Africa (OGPSA) invite you to submit your water hack to some of the country’s water and sanitation challenges.
Your hack could be a big idea, solution, commercial product, community initiative, school project, home solution, inspiring water story, app or online tool, research paper, invention, awareness campaigns, cool water-related song or dance or something we haven’t thought of.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Hack4Water is a nationwide campaign seeking innovative technologies, stories and ideas from all sectors of society. Prizes will be awarded in five categories:

  • Individuals or groups of individuals: individuals, teams, communities or NGOs with majority of members over 25 years of age
  • Youth or Schools: pupils or youth under the age of 25
  • Enterprise Category: established small, medium and large companies
  • Researcher category: individuals and research teams based at universities and research institutes
  • Storytelling: Journalists and individuals reporting on water issues using data and innovative and interactive storytelling methods

BENEFITS:

  • All category winners will receive one month of marketing visibility provided by the Department of Water and Sanitation as part of their nationwide water awareness campaign. The will include print and online media placements, as well as radio and television slots with media partners.
  • Category winners as well as finalists will share various other prizes including*:
  • Funding of up to R300 000 for implementation of a pilot project, and incubation of your product/ business with The Innovation Hub*
  • Tablet PCs from technology partners
  • Travel to water events in South Africa to present your innovation to municipalities, water boards and industry
  • Funding of R20 000 for the winning story

    *New prizes will be added over the next few weeks.

    *The Innovation Hub is based in Gauteng so candidates will either need to be based in the Province or have operations in the region to receive this support.

South Africa launches Startup Nations South Africa- A collaborative Ecosystem for Entrepeneurs

South Africa  became the first African country to launch Startup Nations South Africa (SUNSA), which is a collaborative effort by founding partners, The Innovation Hub, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Wits Business School, aimed at contributing towards building a robust entrepreneurship ecosystem and vibrant sustainable entrepreneurship culture.

South Africa joins a global network of Start Up Nations such as Startup Britain, Startup Chile, Startup Malaysia, Startup China, Startup Norway, Startup Australia and more recently Startup Brazil, Startup Vietnam and Startup Korea.

Startup Nations is an entrepreneurship revolution, focused on advancing the national agenda for entrepreneurship and the creation of a sustainable environment where start-ups and small businesses can meaningfully contribute to the economic and social development of South Africa.

As part of the Startup Nations movement, Startup Nations South Africa will work closely with an international network of entrepreneurship capacity development experts to advance the local entrepreneurship movement.

Speaking at the launch event, Minister Lindiwe Zulu, Minister of Small Business said,

“The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2012 annual survey reminds us that entrepreneurship levels in our country are the lowest they have been in three years. The call to action is for all of us to work hard to inculcate a culture of entrepreneurship in the country. We must consciously strive to build a nation of entrepreneurs and not a nation of job-seekers”

In the spirit of vukuzenzele, our people must seize the economic opportunities presented by our democracy and freedom to build and grow businesses. We see small businesses and co-operatives as critical to creating an economy that benefits all. With its campaign mantra, to spark, seed and sustain, Startup Nations South Africa seeks to unleash local talent and create an entrepreneur ecosystem the drives innovative solutions for local problems.As a full member of Startup Nations and Global Entrepreneurship Week, supported by the Kauffman Foundation, this initiative will enable local startup businesses to share best practices and collaborate with other like-minded peers in the global entrepreneurship movement.
