The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) is a partnership initiative led by CIFOR through its GLF Team. The team is based in the new CIFOR office in Bonn, Germany, and the CIFOR headquarters in Indonesia. The GLF Team is responsible for delivery on all GLF activities, and for expanding the GLF partnership and community.

The Youth in Landscapes Initiative (YIL) is a partnership for young landscape leaders currently coordinated by the Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD), the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA) and the Global AgroEcology Alliance (GAEA).

YIL exists to unite and empower youth (aged 18–35 years) from diverse backgrounds around the world to have a voice, learn, and effect positive change in their landscapes and livelihoods. YIL accomplishes this through a focus on leadership training, capacity building, community building, mentorship and fostering intergenerational dialogue.

Duties and responsibilities

The primary objective of the Youth in Landscapes Network Intern is to facilitate the growth of the network through community building, promotion, and ensuring that programs serve the broader youth community through working with the GLF Youth Coordinator.

  • Coordinate regularly with the Youth in Landscapes Steering Committee and GLF Youth Coordinator (weekly meetings);
  • Assist in creating and delivering youth programs at GLF events (and other partners’ events), as well as long-term youth programs;
  • Maintain all Youth in Landscapes pages on the GLF website;
  • Assist in knowledge management, and regularly update activities and information of YIL partner organizations – International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA), Young Professionals for Agricultural Development (YPARD), Global Agro Ecology Alliance (GAEA), and others;
  • Lead outreach to associate partners and youth organizations;
  • Facilitate engagement and network building on social media (YIL Facebook groups and pages);
  • Craft communications materials, and regularly promote new opportunities;
  • Undertake other key tasks and administration related to young people and GLF as they arise.

Education, knowledge and experience

• Currently enrolled in, or recently obtained, an M.Sc. on Sustainable Development, Nature Conservation, or similar field;
• Strong organizational and communication skills;
• Experience with online engagement, youth organizations, capacity development, or event-management is an asset;
• Experience with WordPress and social media is an asset;
• Experienced and/or comfortable with remote work.

Terms and Conditions

• This is an internship opportunity for 6 months.
• CIFOR’s employment conditions follow local labor laws and regulations. CIFOR will employ suitable candidates regardless of nationality, provided that they comply with the local requirements for working at the posting location. Being a citizen of an EU country is preferred.
• CIFOR may provide the Intern with a monthly stipend or living allowance. The stipend or living allowance provided to the Intern shall follow the rate used by the Human Resources Unit for Interns at CIFOR.
• The duty station will be in Bonn, Germany.

Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) 2019 Youth in Landscapes Camp in Accra,Ghana

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) and the Youth in Landscapes Initiative (YIL) are creating a powerful landscape experience to inform the hearts and minds of future leaders.

Held in the lead-up to the GLF Accra 2019 conference from 29-30 October, this program will bring together young change-makers from around the world to take a deep, analytical look at a local community or project that has successfully achieved its goals for a more sustainable landscape.

Requirements:

  • Are between 18 and 35
  • Have a passion for Sustainable Development
  • Are eager to bring positive change in your own landscape
  • Can easily adapt to different situations

Pre-Workshop
Prior to the workshop, participants will collaborate with organizers via Skype to conduct a gap analysis of their hosting community, and brainstorm recommendations to further improve the landscapes. By bringing their expertise and skills, they will have the possibility to collaborate with the local community on how to strengthen well-functioning features, and how to overcome pressing obstacles.

26 – 28 October: Youth in Landscapes Camp
With three days of interactive workshops, community building activities, and conversations with key stakeholders in the project site, youth participants will be encouraged and inspired to become front-line actors in their countries. The stories will be extensively covered through vlogs on social media.

Example of projects’ topics are: gender equality and economic empowerment, afforestation or restoration of degraded lands, community resilience building, climate change adaptation, enhancing agricultural productivity and value chains.

29-30 October: GLF Accra 2019

After three days of activities in three different communities, participants will gather in Accra for their active involvement in GLF Accra 2019. They will have the opportunity to share their experience with experts from around the world, and to hear about stories and effective approaches to landscape restoration.

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) envisions a more equitable world where forestry and landscapes enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR is a non-profit, scientific institution that conducts research on the most pressing challenges of forest and landscape management around the world. Using a global, multidisciplinary approach, we aim to improve human well-being, protect the environment, and increase equity.

To do so, we conduct innovative research, develop partners’ capacity, and actively engage in dialogue with all stakeholders to inform policies and practices that affect forests and people. CIFOR is a CGIAR Research Center, and leads the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA). Our headquarters are in Bogor, Indonesia, with offices in Nairobi, Kenya, Yaoundé, Cameroon, and Lima, Peru.

The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) is the world’s largest intersectoral platform designed to examine knowledge, share experiences and accelerate action by communities as they invest in and move toward more resilient, climate friendly, diverse, productive, equitable and, thereby, sustainable landscapes.   • Facilitate
    engagement and network building on social media (YIL FB groups).
  • Craft
    communications material and regularly promote new opportunities.
  • Undertake
    other key tasks and administration related to young people and GLF as they arise.
  • Promote and
    assist in coordinating youth activities at GLF Nairobi and GLF Bonn, and help
    with related GLF activities.
  • In
    collaboration with GLF staff, pitch and generate ideas for furthering youth
    engagement.
  • Moderate
    social media platforms and newsletter, and maintain website.

Education, knowledge and experience

  • a minimum of three years of BSc completed in international development, natural science, communication or related fields; recent graduates preferred
    • excellent English writing skills
    • experienced with online engagement, youth organizations, capacity development or event-management
    • experienced with WordPress and social media
    • experienced and/or comfortable with remote work.

Personal Attributes and Competencies

• This is an internship opportunity for 6 months.
