Applications are now open for the 2025 Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award. The Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award was established by Cisco and Global Citizen to recognize and lift up a young person positively impacting the world, demonstrate the impact that young people are having on achieving the United Nation’s Global Goals, and accelerate global problem solving.

The Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award honors an individual aged 18-30 who has contributed meaningfully to global problem solving. The award includes a US$250,000 prize paid to the organization to which the individual contributes.

Eligibility Criteria  
To apply for the Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Age: Between 18 and 30 at the time of application.
  • Organization: Actively involved with an organization or initiative using technology to address poverty and social inequality issues.
  • Purpose: Proven commitment to positively impacting economic development, health, education, or other efforts aligned with the UN Global Goals.

Selection Criteria

  • Impact: Proven track record of measurable impact at scale over the last 3-5 years, advancing one or more of the Global Goals.
  • Vision: Compelling vision and concrete plans for extending this work over the next 3-5 years, including how the prize will advance these efforts.
  • Catalyst: Inspires other young people to make an impact toward achieving one or more of the Global Goals.
  • Global Citizenship: Embodies the values and spirit of a Global Citizen and global problem solver.
  • Technical Innovation: Use technology or internet-based communications to improve efficiency, expand reach, and magnify impact.

Application Process  

Applying for the Cisco Youth Leadership Award is a step-by-step process designed to ensure each candidate’s story and impact shine through. Here’s what to expect:

1. About You: Provide basic personal and organizational information.  

2. Your Pitch: Submit a 1-2 minute video explaining why you should be awarded the prize, detailing how your work supports one or more Global Goals.  

3. Alignment with Judging Criteria: Outline how your work meets the judging criteria — impact, vision, catalyst, global citizenship, and technical innovation — by answering short questions about your work.  

4. Organization Details: Include additional information about your organization, including proof of its registration.

Judging Criteria

  • Candidates will be judged against criteria by a group of Global Citizen, Cisco, and independent experts.
  • Up to five (5) finalists will be selected on or around February 24th, 2023 and will be required to submit three (3) letters of recommendation. If applying for the Prize, you should have your letters of recommendation ready for submission. Additional supplemental information might also be requested of finalists.
  • If selected as one of the 5 finalists, you will be judged by a panel of representatives from Global Citizen, Cisco, and esteemed activists and leaders in the international development field.

Application Procedure:

  • The application consists of four parts: (1) About You: Personal and Organization Information, (2) Pitch (3) Description of how your work aligns with the Judging Criteria (4) Supplemental Organizational Details.
  • For the first part, you will be required to submit basic information about you and your organization and a scanned copy of your passport.

The Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award honors an individual aged 18-30 who has contributed meaningfully towards the goal of ending extreme poverty. The award includes a US$250,000 prize paid to the organization to which the individual contributes.

Judging Prize

Candidates will be judged against criteria by a group of Global Citizen, Cisco, and independent experts.

Up to 10 semi-finalists will be selected and notified on or around October 15, 2020 to submit 3 letters of recommendation. (Once you apply for the Prize, you should have your letters of recommendation ready for submission.) Supplemental information might also be requested of semi-finalists.

If selected as one of the 10 semi-finalists, you will be judged by a panel of representatives from Global Citizen, Cisco, and esteemed activists and leaders in the international development field.

From the 5-10 semi-finalists, 3 finalists will be selected and notified on or around October 30, 2020. The 3 finalists will move forward to a public vote and final round of judging.

The Prize Winner will remain confidential and announced either at the time of filming, live on stage at the 2020 Global Citizen Prize Ceremony or via broadcast in December 2020. 

Selection

Up to 10 semi-finalists will be notified on or around  October 15, 2020.

The 3 finalists will be notified on or around October 30, 2020.

Cisco/Global Citizen Prize for Youth Leadership 2019 ($250,000 prize )

The Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award was established by Cisco and Global Citizen to recognize and lift up a young person positively impacting the world, as a way to demonstrate the impact that young people are having on achieving the Global Goals, and to accelerate global problem solving.

Selected via an application process, the Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award honors an individual aged 18-30 who has contributed meaningfully towards the goal of ending global poverty. The award includes a $250,000 prize paid to the organization to which the individual contributes.

Eligibility

You must be 18-30 years old as of award ceremony in December 2019, and be able to travel to award ceremony to accept prize.

For a period of three years, you must be willing to do media interviews and appearances, and grant rights to GC and Cisco to use name, likeness and related content in GC or Cisco marketing campaigns and on GC or Cisco owned-platforms, such as cisco.com, globalcitizen.org and social platforms.

You must accept the terms and conditions as listed here.

You must not be a citizen of a country or entity subject to financial or other sanctions by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) or other government entity of the United States of America that may restrict the transfer of the Prize.

You must not be an employee of Global Citizen or Cisco.

You must not be any organizations who have previously received prize funding or direct grant funding from Cisco or the Cisco Foundation.

Prize

The winner will receive:

USD $250,000 awarded to a person or specific people on behalf of an organization that is judged to best fit selection criteria.

An all-inclusive round-trip to award ceremony in December for themselves and a guest.

Networking and development opportunities to support their work.
