The G(irls)20 Summit

G(irls)20 is coming to Japan for the 10th annual Global Summit. 20+ young women from around the world will arrive in Tokyo for a week of leadership training, social enterprise development and mentoring by female leaders in the business and public sectors. Delegates contribute the economic and social issues facing girls & women in their countries to a Communiqué delivered to world leaders in advance of the G20 Summit and leave the Summit with increased confidence, new skills, and a global network that will allow them to make change as a community and global advocates!

The Summit will be held from May 25th – 31st, 2019 (delegates to arrive May 23 or 24) in Tokyo, Japan.

The G(irls)20 Summit is modeled after the G20 Summit and culminates in a one-day symposium with local and international panelists, keynotes, and experts on economic and social issues facing girls and women.

Eligibility Requirements:

Must be 18 years old to apply, and must not be older than 23 years old in May 2019. Date of birth must be between May 30, 1995 – January 1, 2001.
Holds or can obtain a valid passport
Holds citizenship in any of the participating countries or regions (see above)

Benefits:

G(irls)20 will cover the following costs for all delegates:

Flights to and from Tokyo from their nearest major city
Transportation to and from the airport in Tokyo
Accommodation in a shared room with one other female delegate
All meals during the week
Costs associated with travel visas

The week-long summit for delegates will include:

Workshops building valuable leadership skills — from Emotional Intelligence to Strategic Planning
Panels and speeches on the key issues facing girls and women globally — with an emphasis on digital inclusion and financial inclusion
Developing a Communiqué to G20 leaders, with recommendations based on the delegates unique experience and expertise
Networking receptions with movers and shakers in the public and private sectors
Building a network of female mentors from the across the public and private sectors
The opportunity to build lifelong friendships with 20+ young female leaders from around the world

Please note the Indigenous delegate position is open to any young woman from around the world who belongs to a self-identified Indigenous group. Indigenous peoples, as defined by the United Nations: “are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Despite their cultural differences, indigenous peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples”.

Delegate Expectations:

Every applicant submits one idea for a policy recommendation to be incorporated into the Communiqué + one idea for a community development project to launch at home. Successful delegates will be expected to:

Spend approximately 5 hours per week from January – May 2019 doing pre-summit work online
Collaborate with an online Working Group of delegates to develop policy recommendations
Participate in 1-2 phone calls per month with policy experts, leadership coaches, and media training experts
Participate fully in the week-long Summit, including attending all sessions, making new connections, asking questions, and bringing an open mind

G(IRLS)20 is a unique global platform that economically empowers girls and women around the world.

The G(irls)20 Summit brings together one delegate from each G20 country, plus a representative from the European and African Unions, the MENA region, Afghanistan and Pakistan. In keeping with the G20 Turkey Presidency, a delegate from Azerbaijan, Singapore and Spain joined this year’s Summit.

While the G(irls)20 delegates discuss the same topics as the G20 Leaders, the participants are all girls, aged 18-23. There have been 6 Summits to date: Toronto, Canada (2010); Paris, France (2011); Mexico City, Mexico (2012); Moscow, Russia (2013); Sydney, Australia (2014).

The 2016 G(irls)20 Summit will be held in China next August. A delegate from each G20 country, as well as the African & European Union, Pakistan, Afghanistan & MENA region, will be selected to represent their country.

Eligibility Requirements:

All applicants must meet the following criteria:

Female, between the ages of 18-23 (at the time of Summit);
Lives in and holds citizenship in a G20 member country, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the African or European Unions, or the MENA region;
Is proficient in the English language for all verbal and written communications;
Has or can obtain a valid passport and visa for travel no later than April 31, 2016
Has an interest in the economic advancement of girls and women;
Will commit to launching a post-Summit initiative/project in her own community;
Has parental or guardian permission to travel to China and to fully participate in the summit for the duration of the Summit (This may require absence from school); and,
Will provide consent to appear in any and all media.

Benefits:

Summit learning materials and supplies;
Return economy air travel arrangements, from the closest international airport to the delegate’s home to China;
Accommodations while in China (in transit accommodations to be covered by the delegate);
Meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner and refreshments each day;
All ground transportation while in China.

Please note: it will be the responsibility of the delegate to arrange her own ground transportation to and from her home and the airport, as well as passport and visas (some countries will require a visa).

Timeline:

Deadline to submit complete applications: January 15^th, 2016, Midnight (EST);
Applications will be reviewed by the G(irls)20 Global Advisory & Partners;
Two finalists from each country will be selected and contacted by mid February, 2016. Phone interviews will be held shortly thereafter (only those selected for an interview will be contacted); and,
G(irls)20 2016 Final Delegates will be announced March 8^th, 2016 on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Scan of Passport. If you do not have a passport at the time of application, submit a government document to show proof of age – birth certificate, national identity card, etc.
