DAAD/African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) PhD Scholarship Programme 2017 in Mathematical Sciences (Funded)

DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service, in association with AIMS, provides five in-region scholarships for a PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences. These scholarship are available to students wishing to commence a PhD programme at a South African University. Research fields considered include (mathematical sciences, statistics, computational and applied maths, physics, cosmology, computer science, bio-informatics).

Funds awarded by the scholarship must be used towards covering the costs of tuition fees, living expenses, medical insurance, books, stationery, research literature expenses, study permit and research.

Eligibility

  • African nationals from Sub Saharan countries (excluding South African nationals), and not older than 36 years of age on the date of nomination may apply.
  • Women are particularly encouraged to submit an application.

Benefits:

The DAAD scholarship and simultaneous financial support from other sources

  • While on a DAAD scholarship you must not accept scholarship or awards from other German sources nor apply for support from the German national educational assistance system – BaföG.
  • If you intend to accept or apply for additional funds from a German source, e.g. to cover the expense of special equipment or computer time within the framework of your academic work or to help you and your family in an emergency, you must obtain prior approval in writing from the DAAD.
  • If you receive a supplementary scholarship, grant or award from your own country or from another non-German source, it remains without effect on the DAAD scholarship as long as the total received is below the tax-free income level in Germany (presently 450 euros per month).
  • NB! Applicants are obligated to inform DAAD of all supplementary grants received.

Selections

AIMS will administer the selection process and then submit a short – list of candidates to DAAD for approval. The selection process takes place early December 2016.

Application

  • The new online portal for applications is now open and applications and will close on 30 November 2016.
  • AIMS will continue to screen and short-list applications and submit to DAAD for final approval.
  • The complete application documents (see below) should be submitted to DAAD by the applicants via the DAAD-Portal. Incomplete applications or applications that reach DAAD Bonn after the above mentioned deadline will not be conisdered.

  • Curriculum Vitae (Europass format)
  • Letter of motivation
  • Recommendation by your head of department
  • Certified copies of all university degree certificates including transcripts
  • At least temporary admission letter indicating the fees structure of the required university
  • Declaration of acceptance from academic supervisor (original only)
  • Detailed and precise description of the research proposal with detailed working plan and time schedule until graduation.

2015/2016 ANSTI/DAAD PostGraduate Fellowship for Sub-Saharan African Students to study in Germany

ANSTI/DAAD Post-Graduate Fellowships -The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) a publicly funded, self-governing oragnisation of the institutions of higher learning in Germany, promotes international academic exchange as well as educational co-operation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programmes. DAAD cooperates with African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) by offering a number of in-region scholarships for Masters and Ph.D degrees.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Fellowships are awarded to sub-Saharan African nationals for studies outside the applicants’ home countries.
  • Applicants must hold a good bachelors degree (at least 2nd class upper division) and be not older than 36 years old.
  • The initial award of the fellowships covers one year. Extension is possible up to two years for Masters courses or more for Ph.D studies upon successful completion of previous year.
  • Applicants must obtain the official admission to the host university prior to his/her application for the fellowship. Applicants should apply for the admission to the host university as soon as possible.

Benefits

  • Fellowships, which cover fees, subsistence and international travel, are awarded to staff of ANSTI member institutions  for postgraduate studies (M.Sc. or Ph.D) at African universities for staff development.

How to Apply:

The completed application forms in triplicate (part 1 and part 2) should be accompanied by the
following documents:-

  • copy of bachelor’s degree certificate for Masters course applicant (copy of bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates for PhD course applicant)
  • certified transcripts of university academic performance
  • official results of pre-university final exams
  • letter of admission to the host university
  • letter of recommendation with a remark indicating that the applicant is already a university staff member or is to be employed as staff member after successful completion of the studies
  • two passport size photos and Curriculum Vitae
  • For PhD application, detailed research proposal with workplan
  • The completed fellowship application should reach the ANSTI secretariat by 31st May 2015.

Study Visits Grants to Germany for Groups of Foreign University Students 2014.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds Study Visits / Study Seminars and Practicals in Germany by groups of foreign students headed by a university teacher.

DAAD offers financial support for subject-related academic information visits to Germany organized by faculty members for groups of students. Group Study Visit grants are intended to encourage contact with academic institutions, groups and individuals in Germany, and offer insight into current issues in the academic, scientific, economic, political and cultural realms

The objectives of a study trip are:

  • to establish and maintain contacts between German and foreign universities
  • to provide participants with a subject-specific knowledge by organising visits to at least two universities, subject-related tours and informative meetings
  • to promote meetings with German students and academics and scientists
  • to offer participants an insight into economic,political and cultural life in Germany

Who can apply?

  • University teachers from a foreign university are eligible to apply.

Requirements:

  • Students must be registered at a foreign university and have completed at least one semester.

Language skills

  • Students in a group should have the same level of proficiency in the chosen programme language (usually English or German)

What is supported?

  • Study trips for groups of a maximum of 15 students accompanied by one university teacher.
  • Individual doctoral candidates may also be funded after consultation with the DAAD.
  • The groups visit at least two German universities where they participate in the academic programme.
  • A cultural programme is organised in the evenings and at weekends.

Duration of funding

  • At least 7 days and a maximum of 12 days

Value

  • A flat rate allowance of 50 euros per person per day is paid as a contribution towards travel and accommodation expenses. This applies to the following countries: Groups from the EU states, Albania, Australia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hong Kong, Iceland, Japan, Canada, Croatia, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, Serbia, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine and USA.
  • For groups from the “remaining countries”, the DAAD pays for travel within Germany directly, participants only receive a meals allowance of 18 euros per day.

Selection

  • Students or groups of students cannot apply directly to the DAAD; the university submitting an application is responsible for selecting participants.

2013/2014 DAAD Postgraduate Scholarship for Young Professionals to study in Germany.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides scholarships in Germany for international students for a range of postgraduate courses at German Universities which aim at providing academically educated young professionals from developing countries with further specialized studies.

These degree courses, which consist of one to two years of concentrated study, provide academically-trained young professionals in leading positions from developing countries with the opportunity to engage in postgraduate education and training in their particular field or profession.

Field(s) of Study:

Postgraduate courses are offered in the following fields:

• Economic Sciences / Business Administration / Political Economics
• Development Co-operation
• Engineering and Related Sciences
• Mathematics
• Regional Planning
• Agriculture and Forest Sciences
• Environmental Sciences
• Medicine and Public Health
• Veterinary Medicine
• Sociology and Education

Host Institution(s):

German Universities offering postgraduate courses with relevance to developing countries.

 

Eligibility:

• Will come either from a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country and, as such, be engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas.

• Holds a Bachelor’s degree (4 years) in related subject.

• Will have completed an academic degree far beyond average and at least two years of related professional experience.

• Is not older than 36 (for some courses the age limit is 32), and his/her respective academic degrees should normally not be older than 3 years. Concerning a possible age limit, please refer to the course details on the following pages.

• For courses in German: DSH 2 or TestDaF 4; at time of application German skills at completed level A2 are required. In addition, German language courses at level A3 or B1 are highly recommended.

• For courses in English: TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based) or IELTS (band 6) certificate.

Application instructions:

Scholarship applicants can apply at the German embassy or DAAD regional office, directly at the DAAD in Bonn or directly to the university.  For Cameroon, Myanmar, Nigeria it is highly recommended to submit the applications only via the German Embassy.

The applicant should submit the complete requirements as found in this link.  The applicant also needs to follow separate specific application requirements and instructions (if any) set by a course.

Application deadlines for DAAD-scholarships are as follows:

•At German embassies and/or at the DAAD regional offices: 31 July
• At the DAAD section 431 in Bonn/Germany: 30 August
• At the respective universities in Germany: 30 September or 15 October

 

Applicants should make sure to check information regarding university-specific application closing dates directly with the individual universities  because they may vary from the general deadlines listed above.
