The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute invites proposals from people and organizations who wish to partner with us on innovative projects that strengthen democracy through better journalism.

Successful projects often include devising new strategies to take advantage of an opportunity or solve a problem, building new tools for news organizations, transforming an idea into a market-tested prototype or advancing a prototype so it’s ready for investment or a full product launch.

Whatever your idea, its benefits should extend to other news organizations and the people who depend on them.

Requirements:

RJI Fellowships are open to U.S. citizens and news organizations as well as international news outlets.
RJI also welcome proposals from international journalists who plan to partner with U.S.-based news, technology and civil society organizations.

1. Residential

Residential fellowships are designed for persons, inside and outside media industries, who want to collaborate with RJI in the pursuit of solutions to a particular journalism problem. Residential fellows spend eight months on campus at the Missouri School of Journalism, taking advantage of the intellectual and technological resources of RJI and the school and interacting with Missouri faculty and students.

Resource examples include access to programmers and app developers, financial support to conduct market research, and paid students to produce multimedia content.

Solutions — in the form of strategies, products or services — developed from these ideas would be shared with many news and news-related organizations. You must reside in Columbia, Missouri, for the duration of this fellowship.

WHO:Anyone above the age of 18
WHEN:Sept. 1, 2019
HOW LONG:8 months (two academic semesters)
HOW MUCH:Fellows receive a $10,000 a month stipend and a one-time $10,000 allowance to use for relocation or housing.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:Jan. 31, 2019

2. Nonresidential

Nonresidential fellowships are designed for entrepreneurial individuals with a strong interest in journalism and issues related to digital communications. Your fellowship can be about something you are interested in pursuing on your own or something that could benefit a current employer. Successful ideas, products or strategies should serve as a model for the news industry or help the industry get smarter, faster and nimbler. You do not need to live in Columbia but you will need to make occasional visits to consult with RJI leadership and staff.

WHO:Anyone above the age of 18
WHEN:Starting date is negotiable
HOW LONG:8 months
HOW MUCH:Fellows receive a $20,000 stipend, payable monthly for eight months at $2,500 per month, plus some research and travel support.
APPLICATION DEADLINE:Jan. 31, 2019

3. Institutional

Institutional fellowships are designed to unlock some of the thoughtful, meaningful ideas inside newsrooms, ad departments, boardrooms and break rooms that for various reasons can’t get any traction. RJI will collaborate with a leader at a company or institution who will identify an employee who can develop an idea or lead a team that could do it. The employee will be named an RJI Fellow but will continue working at his or her job.

The stipend for this fellowship will be paid to the company or institution to be used for salary relief for the part-time fellow, or for another purpose that the company or institution determines will best ensure the success of the fellowship project.

2015 Donald W. Reynolds Fellowships for Journalists – $10,000 a month stipend (Fully Funded)

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute invites proposals from people and institutions to collaborate with RJI on innovative ideas and projects to improve the practice or understanding of journalism

Successful collaborations are often in one of three categories but are not limited to these categories:

  • Transformation of an idea into a market tested prototype;
  • Development and deployment of a prototyped product or service into a substantial market test to prepare it for angel or venture investment or a full launch of the project;
  • Scholarly research that leads to publication of new understandings about the practice of journalism.

There are three formats for RJI Fellowships:

1. RJI Residential Fellow

Designed for persons inside and outside media industries, who want to collaborate with RJI in the pursuit of solutions to a particular journalism problem. Residential fellows spend eight months on campus at the Missouri School of Journalism, taking advantage of the intellectual and technological resources of RJI and the school and interacting with Missouri faculty and students.

You must reside in Columbia for the duration of this fellowship.

  • WHO: Anyone above the age of 18
  • WHEN: Sept. 1, 2015
  • HOW LONG: 8 months (two academic semesters)

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute invites proposals from people who have innovative ideas to improve the practice or understanding of journalism. Because of the current acute financial challenges to supporting quality journalism, we are particularly interested this year in ideas on how to connect citizens with news and advertising more efficiently, to grow revenues, to engage communities or to ensure that the industry is taking full advantage of new and emerging technologies.

To help turn these ideas into useful new tools, strategies, products or services, the RJI offers an annual fellowship program that gives individuals an opportunity to help nurture and grow innovative ideas — to build their expertise and the public’s knowledge in these areas.

The Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute inviting applications from individuals, inside and outside the media industries, who want to spend the next school year working with us developing new knowledge and new possibilities to enhance journalism practice. We generally select between four and seven fellows each year.

1. RJI residential Fellow — Designed for persons, inside and outside media industries, who want to pursue solutions to journalism challenges or who have an idea that would explore new opportunities. Residential fellows spend eight months on the Missouri campus, taking advantage of the intellectual and technological resources of RJI and the University and interacting with Missouri faculty and students. Some examples include: Access to programmers and app developers, financial support to conduct market research, and hiring students to produce multi-media content.

Solutions, in the form of strategies, products or services, developed from these ideas would be shared with many news and news-related organizations. You must reside in Columbia for the duration of this fellowship.

WHO: Anyone over the age of 18.
WHEN: September 1, 2013.
HOW LONG: Eight months (two academic semesters).
HOW MUCH: Fellows receive a $10,000 monthly stipend, plus a one-time $10,000 housing allowance.
DEADLINE: Consideration of applications will begin February 15, 2013 (visit Fellowship FAQs for details).

2. RJI Non-residential Fellow — Designed for employees of a news, technology or related company who have ideas they can develop while continuing in their jobs. You must have permission from your company to join us. Your idea should also provide a direct benefit to your company and have a clear path to implementation. In addition, successful ideas, products or strategies should serve as a model for the industry. You do not need to live in Columbia, Mo., but will need to make occasional visits to consult with RJI leadership and staff.

WHO: Anyone currently working for a media, technology or related company.
WHEN: September 1, 2013.
HOW LONG: Eight months (two academic semesters).
HOW MUCH: Fellows receive a $20,000 stipend for the year, plus research and travel support.
